The Year 7s have generally settled in well and the seniors have taken to their leadership roles very efficiently as well. Of course there some outliers, but I must take this opportunity to thank all those parents who have worked with us to support their student[s] through any anxious moments which may have arisen. I must congratulate the Student Welfare Faculty, Denise our CEC and Setefano our MPI Liaison Officer for organising what was an outstanding Harmony Day celebration. With significant input from our Aboriginal and Torres Strait dancers and our Maori and Pacific Islander singers, and with the flags of 24 nations proudly on display, the school celebrated and rejoiced in the diversity of our community. While I was unable to be there because of a meeting I was sent a wonderful photo of the event which I was able to share with the people around me. All were amazed at what the students had put together. We are now in the process of hanging the flags of our students’ nations in the Hall so that we can be constantly reminded of the importance of our heritage while still taking pride in our Australian selves. In addition to those 160 students who were born overseas, we also have students from every state and territory and of course more than 260 of the first nation peoples from all over Australia. This cultural mix is important to our school because two of our Five Minds are the Ethical and Respectful ones. It would be very difficult for students to fully develop those minds if they did not accept and value the different races, religions, belief systems and opinions of those around them. I take great pride in the way our students behave towards those in the community who are not “the same” as them. They share one badge, and one set of values, those of Ipswich State High, and with the further development of the student led Wellness Project, I know they will all evolve into respected and influential members of the community. PARENT TEACHER INTERVIEWSParent Teacher Interviews will be held on Wednesday 19 April2017 in the Ipswich State High School Hall. This is an importantevent for the school as it provides a most effective way tocommunicate the achievement of students for the year to date. You are strongly encouraged to book interviews with all ofyour child’s teachers to be able fully understand his or herengagement with the curriculum, their teachers and their peers.

Face to face communication with parents has become morecommon in education because teachers realise that the bestpossible learning and achievement can only be obtained inconsultation with parents.

Parents possess a great deal of information that could be usefulto the teacher and teachers have a great deal of information onhow parents can help at home.

The best way to discuss your child’s progress is in an informalmeeting with his/her teacher. The teacher will be spendingsome time preparing for the ‘conference’. They will gatherrecords, samples of work, and organise their own thoughts andimpressions of your child.

Please refer to the “Book School Interviews Online” flyerattached with this newsletter

YOU CAN PREPARE BY:

WHAT WILL THE TEACHER ASK?

QUESTIONS YOU MIGHT ASK

AFTER THE INTERVIEW

The most important part of the meeting with your child’steacher begins now.

• deciding what you wish to ask the teacher;

• talking over the meeting with your child. See if thereis anything they would like you to talk about with theteacher. Sit down as a family and discuss whichaspects of your child’s school work are puzzling orworrying you.

• preparing information about your son/daughter whichthe teacher may not be aware. Teachers reallyappreciate extra information about their students -likes and dislikes, hobbies and interests andrelationships with other family members.

• The teacher will probably ask about your child’sreaction to school; his/her health; interests andexpectations.

• Teachers may enquire about student’s study habitsand place of study.

• Teachers may wish to discuss student’s response torules, responsibilities, part-time work and how theyspend time after school.

• What is my child’s ability - are they working to theirability? Has my child shown any special interests?

• What is my child’s behaviour like?

• Behaviour/attitude towards the teachers, otherstudents, and work?

• What suggestions do you have which would helphim/her to improve - may I see some of my child’swork? How can I best help my son/daughter withtheir school work or study habits?

• Ask about seeing the Guidance Officers.

• Talk over with your child what information yougained.

Although the weather was touchand go each day students completed a number of activitiesincluding sailing, stand up paddle boarding, cycling and laserskirmish that challenged them both physically and mentally. The students were divided into three groups and within thesegroups they had to come together as a team to help eachother through each of the activities. Whether it was trying tostand up on a paddle board for the first time with extremelyhigh winds or running through the bush trying win a gameof laser skirmish, each day presented with new challengesand students were pushed to “step up” and show leadershipthroughout the activities and their social interactions with theirpeers. After each activity students were encouraged to give ashout out to somebody who showed leadership and helpedtheir peers complete the activity. Overall the camp wasextremely successful with students having pushed themselvesout of their comfort zone to try new things and walking awaywith new friendships.

Harmony Day March 21stOur diversity makes Australia a great place to live. HarmonyDay is a celebration of our cultural diversity – a day of culturalrespect for everyone who calls Australia home.

The message of Harmony Day is ‘everyone belongs’, the dayaims to encourage people to participate in their community, respect cultural and religious diversity and foster a sense ofbelonging for everyone.

Since 1999, more than 70,000 Harmony Day events have beenheld in childcare centres, schools, community groups, churches, businesses and federal, state and local governmentagencies across Australia.

Orange is the colour chosen to represent Harmony Day.Traditionally, orange signifies social communication andmeaningful conversations. It also relates to the freedom of ideasand encouragement of mutual respect.

Australia is a vibrant and multicultural country — from the oldestcontinuous culture of our first Australians to the cultures of ournewest arrivals from around the world.

Our cultural diversity is one of our greatest strengths and is atthe heart of who we are. It makes Australia a great place to live.

Multicultural Australia is an integral part of our national identity. All people who migrate to Australia bring with them some oftheir own cultural and religious traditions, as well as takingon many new traditions. Collectively, these traditions haveenriched our nation.

There are some fascinating statistics about Australia’s diversitywhich are interesting to consider:

Communicating the importance of cultural diversity –encourages values, promotes participation and provides somefun ways to learn. So however you decide to engage in ourcommunity this Harmony Day may you encounter a sense ofbelonging.

E-CIGARETTESRecently it has been brought to my attention that there issome confusion surrounding the laws and the use of electroniccigarettes (e-cigarettes). E-cigarettes are also known ase-cigars, vape pens or personal vapourisers. They heat liquid, which usually contains nicotine, into a fine vapour for inhalationinto the lungs. Products vary widely in design and operation, but typically consist of a battery, heating element, and acartridge or refillable tank containing substances such aspropylene glycol, vegetable glycerine, liquid nicotine andflavourings.

The use of e-cigarettes is regulated under the Tobacco andOther Smoking Products Act 1998 (Tobacco Act) as smokingproducts. E-cigarettes have been subject to the same laws asregular cigarettes, from 1 January 2015.

This means that e-cigarettes cannot be:

Electronic cigarettes often contain liquid nicotine which is illegalin Queensland. It is an offence under the Health (Drugs andPoisons) Regulation 1996, for a person to manufacture, obtain, possess, prescribe, dispense, sell, advertise, use or destroynicotine, unless the person is specifically authorised or holds anapproval under the HDPR. The maximum penalty is $9,108.

Because of this, products containing liquid nicotine are oftenincorrectly labeled to avoid detection and have no qualitycontrol assuring the safety of the product. Nicotine is a poisonand can cause serious injury and death. Electronic cigarettesare particularly dangerous to younger children who might beattracted by the packaging or flavouring - the fatal dose ofnicotine for children is 10 mg.

To report the sale or possession of electronic cigarettescontaining liquid nicotine, call 13 QGOV (13 74 68).
