Whats a Final Year Project?
The final year project is required to seek individualanalysis and judgement, capable of being assessedindependently from the work of others. The student is
expected to develop techniques in literature review
and information processing. It is recommended that
final year projects should also provide opportunities toutilise appropriate modern technology in some aspect
of the work, emphasising the need for engineers to
make use of computers and multimedia technology ineveryday practice.

Plagiarism (2/7)
Why do it?
Students may feel pressured to complete papers well
and quickly, and with the accessibility of the Internet,
students can plagiarize by copying and pastinginformation from other sources very conveniently. This is
often easily detected by teachers because it is easy to
tell whether a student used his or her own voice.

How not to do it?
When the work of another author is referred to in academicwriting, there are 3 ways to incorporate this into your work:
Summary - The authors original words are rewritten into a
substantially shortened form that captures the most importantelements.
Paraphrase - The authors original words are substantially
rewritten, but the original meaning is retained.
Direct quotation - Usually a short phrase where the original
wording is very important; it is essential that the words quotedverbatim are clearly indicated using quotation marks () and/orby using italics, indented paragraphs etc.

Plagiarism check
The student shall submit his/her report, by the chapters, to
Turnitin.com to generate the Originality Report; refer to
Section 4.2 of The Final Year Report Template And
Guidelines for instructions on how this is done
The similarity percentages in this report are to be recorded
in the Similarity Index Form, and justifications must be
provided for any chapters with similarity index above 10%
Both the Originality Report and the Similarity Index Form
(endorsed by the supervisor) are to be submitted
separately with the softcover report during examination

Take home tips
Do not plagiarize
Do not be late for appointments with your supervisor Contact your supervisor at the soonest to cancel or postpone
the appointment if you cannot make it for the appointment
Do not hide when you hit a dead end Quickly seek advice from your supervisor if you do not know
how to proceed with your FYP
Do not procrastinate in your FYP It is your responsibility to set up regular weekly appointments
with your supervisor and to update him/her on your progress And always back up your work!
