WHAT YOU CAN DO TO SUPPORT THE TRUST

When it comes to supporting the Trust, there are many fun ways to get involved.

Venue hire

As the Palm House is becoming an ever so popular hire venue, the funds generated through private functions go towards preserving the building and it’s exotic plant collection.

The grade II Victorian glasshouse is one of Liverpool’s most iconic and treasured venues, which offers a unique space for a variety of special occasions including:

• Weddings

• Renewal of vows

• Naming ceremonies

• Anniversary parties

• Special birthday parties

• Retirement parties

• Memorials

• Award ceremonies

• Networking events

• Corporate dinners

• University graduation balls

• Proms

• Performances – music/dance/theatre

• Volunteer your time

Become a ‘Friend’ of the Palm House

Sefton Park Palm House welcomes the support of its Friends. In order to conserve the creative botanical space, members of the public are encouraged to subscribe to a Friends card.

In return for a valued card subscription, members will receive exclusive offers on Trust ticketed events and merchandise. Additionally, card holders will also be sent regular newsletters that contain inside news on events and active audience participation such as the monthly ‘Impressions of the Palms’ competition.

Volunteer your time

Without the help from our devoted volunteers, the maintenance of the Trust could not be fulfilled. We are often looking for new people to join our ever-growing team.

The much appreciated role of the volunteers includes greeting and assisting visitors, as well as providing them with comprehensive information and offering guided tours. In order to raise awareness of the ethos of the Palm House, volunteers are also responsible for collating the Friends packs and mail outs.

Make a donation

An alternative hands-on approach in supporting the Trust is by making a donation.

We are so grateful of any contribution, whether it is a large or small sum. The warm and sincere generosity of the public truly makes such an impact in the work that we do to preserve our beautiful site.

Leave a legacy in your Will

In order to secure the future of Sefton Park Palm House, an inexpensive legacy can be formulated within a Will.

Legacies of all sizes are an increasing important source of funds that will have a lasting and direct impact on the work that we do for many years to come. A legacy can be left to support all of our events, activities and site maintenance to ensure a positive future is on the horizon.

All legacies provided to the Trust are free from inheritance tax; therefore family members are left with a peace of mind and less tax to pay.

EXOTIC PLANTS

The various varieties of Bougainvilleas provide us with superb colour nearly all year as they weave their way around the perimeter.

The Jasmine by the East Door perfumes the early spring. Other beautiful plants include various Cannas between the Main and West door, the Bird of Paradise in the central bed with its distinctive flowers, reminiscent of birds’ heads and the Angel’s Trumpet with its large white flowers.

The Lantana from the West Indies is very attractive to butterflies and insects. The variegated foliage of the Hibiscus in the Americas bed competes for attention with its red flowers.

EXTERNAL CATERERS

The Palm House has carefully chosen its caterers in order to fulfil clients’ high expectations.

Each company is experienced in providing bespoke menus including cuisines from around the world. They have worked with us for many years and have therefore become extremely familiar with our stunning venue.

All of our approved caterers can offer an all-inclusive price to help achieve proposed budgets. Whether it’s a full sit-down dinner, a buffet or a barbecue, the highly renowned North West companies can cater to all individual requirements.

In order to permit a truly tailored and client focused service, all of our caterers invite clients to meet and greet their hospitality team.

A BRIEF HISTORY

• Liverpool millionaire Henry Yates Thompson gifted £10,000 to the city to build the Palm House.

• Originally opened in 1896, it measures 25m high on a base of red granite from the Isle of Mull. There are 3,710 flat panes of glass, all individually cut.

• In 1939, the glass was painted in camouflage colours to avoid the reflection of moonlight guiding enemy bombers. However, in 1941 a nearby bomb shattered the glass, but left the main structure intact.

• The glasshouse was re-glazed and opened again in the 1950’s. In the1980’s a lack of repairs meant it was closed and threatened with demolition.

• Local residents organised a public meeting in 1991 with 800 people attending. The campaign led to a partial restoration and re-opening in 1993.

• In 1997, Heritage Lottery Fund and English Heritage grants allowed for a complete restoration. Work began in spring 2000, which led to the reopening of the Palm House on September 6th 2001.

Just a 10 minute drive from Sefton Park Palm House, hope street hotel is Liverpool’s original and most prestigious independent boutique hotel with a highly acclaimed and award winning restaurant The London Carriage Works.

Our design is urbane and chic with exposed brick walls, cast iron pillars, pine beams, solid wood floors and oak panelling. The rooms are individually designed with oversized beds draped in white Egyptian cotton. Picture windows and skylights capture some of the stunning architecture that fills this part of the city and surrounds the hotel.

In an architectural style popular in the 1860’s - the Venetian Palazzo, the hotel sits in the middle of one of the most exciting of streets; Hope Street is book ended by the city’s two Cathedrals, surrounded by it’s universities, the V&A’s Victoria Gallery and Museum, the Everyman and Unity theatres, the Philharmonic concert hall and an abundance and variety of restaurants and cafes. use that time to capture lots of candid shots of you and your guests having a fantastic time. The resulting images tend to be more flattering and capture the atmosphere of your wedding at the

Palm House much better.
