After graduating from Concordia Lutheran Jr College, I went to work for E.E. Steucy, Inc., a construction company where I worked on as the foreman of a line crew and then as a lineman deconstructing telephone lines.Realizing that, while construction was an honest way to make a living, I wanted more for my family and a career so I decided to enter law enforcement.

UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS AT AUSTIN POLICE DEPARTMENT 1972-1975

I worked, first as a security guard (while waiting to attend the academy) and then as a patrol officer for the University. My duties were to investigate reported crimes and to enforce local, state, and federal laws and to protect the students, guests, and faculty of the University as well as the University itself. Although a good job, I wanted to expand my experience to include municipal law enforcement so I moved to Tyler, TX.

My duties in Tyler were the same as at the University – to investigate reported crimes, enforce local, state, and federal laws. I did this first as a patrol officer and then as an at-scene accident investigator.

AUSTIN PARK POLICE 1981--1983

In 1981, I was contacted by the City of Austin Parks and Recreation Department and advised that I had been hired as a park police officer.

My duties were to investigate reported crimes, enforce local, state, and federal laws within the boundaries of the city’s parks.

Figuring that I was doing approximately the same job as municipal patrolmen but getting paid less, in September of 1983, I entered the police academy for the regular City of Austin Police Department.

In 1988, I started a part-time business performing consultations for lawyers and insurance companies regarding motor vehicle accident law suits. In 2006, I expanded the business to include private investigations, background investigations, etc., after having successfully passed the licensing exam required by the State of Texas and receiving my permit number. The business remained part-time as I continued to work at other employment and attend college. In 2008, I shut down the business to attend graduate school in Montana.

AUSTIN POLICE DEPARTMENT – RECRUITING 2006-2008

In 2006, I returned to work at the Austin Police Department, this time as a seasonal background investigator. In this role I was able to meet many of the applicants wanting to become police officers for the City of Austin. I conducted background investigations on each of the applicants assigned to me. This included contacting former friends, family members, employers, and anyone else thought to have knowledge of the applicant and his/her history. After reviewing the information from various sources, a report was written and it along with a recommendation was forwarded to the supervisor in charge of the unit. If the applicant had passed the background check and the recommendation phase of the review, they were scheduled for an oral interview board. As the background investigator I was required to attend the oral board to provide answers to any questions that might arise. I ended my association with the recruiting office in 2008 when I decided to go to graduate school in Montana.

VALUESWhen I first entered law enforcement many years ago, a popular anagram for the police was “pig”.What it stood for then, it still stands for today –

PRIDE -- take pride in your work and what you do -- if you are not able to take pride in something that you do or have done, then don’t do it.

INTEGRITY -- make sure that your word is worth something -- if you say it, mean it and then stand behind what you have said. Your word is only as good as your reputation.

GUTS -- have the courage to maintain your convictions, even if they are not popular.

Page 25: What I’Ve Done With My Life

MORE VALUES

Two other small items to add to the list of values are:1. Common Sense and Good Judgment -- if common sense and good judgment are used when making decisions then (for the most part) the outcome will be favorable.

2. If it is to be -- it is up to me -- if you want something to happen then it is up to you, the individual, to make it happen. Our lives are our responsibility, as are the results of our decisions. You will not get what you desire if you wait for someone else to give it to you.

Page 26: What I’Ve Done With My Life

WHERE DO I GO FROM HERE?

I plan to finish my PhD in Historical Anthropology and Cultural Resource Management , to continue to teach, online preferred, and to expand the areas I can teach to include classes in criminal justice.

Continuing to do archaeological research and to publish the findings are also part of what I plan to do.

Most importantly, I plan to continue learning as much as I can and to give that knowledge to anyone who wishes to learn it.

An interesting job would be nice since money is not my main objective nor is fame.
