WHAT IS VISUAL HIERARCHY?

Visual Hierarchy is the arrangement of elements in a

manner that highlights what is most important and

influences the order the eyes perceive the elements.

This is created through the manipulation of the

elements and principles of design, mainly: Scale/Size,

Colour, Contrast, Alignment, Proximity, Symmetry

Elements of Design – Building blocks of design.

(ex. line, shape, colour, size, texture, value, space – negative vs positive, form)

Principles of Design – The way elements are paired together to create certain effects.

(ex. balance – symmetry vs asymmetry, scale, repetition, contrast, emphasis, harmony, unity)

Good designers avoid using busy detailed and textured

backgrounds so that foreground objects are prominent and clear.

Good designers avoid over-stylizing text and instead focus on

clarity and prominence.
