The Night of Broken Glass

Jews throughout Germany and Austria were beaten and killed. Their homes, shops, and places of worship were looted and smashed. Many Jews then fled to other parts of Europe to escape the misery of life in the Third Reich. Some also went to Britain and North and South America. As the Nazis overran Europe, Jews once again found themselves under Hitler’s authority. This created what the Nazis called, “the Jewish problem.” In January 1942, Nazi leaders officially decided to murder all Jews in Europe. At the Wannsee Conference, Nazi leaders set forth their plan for the “final solution to the Jewish problem.”
