Online ESL Courses

With the Internet making information so readily available, many international students are turning

toonline ESL courses to study English.

In a previous article, we learned that English is the most commonly spoken language in the world, and that people who can speak English proficiently enjoy many benefits. Understanding and speaking English improves your chances of finding a higher paying job (whether abroad or in your home country), opens up doors to quality colleges and universities, and even allows you to befriendpeople from all over the world. But not everyone can make the huge life decision to study Englishabroad. Furthermore, there are many reasons why a potential ESL student may want to take English courses online, such as the following:

1. If you have career and family responsibilities, then taking traditional ESL courses at your local school or studying English abroadmay not be a realistic option. Online ESL courses give you the flexibility and freedom to study English when it’smost convenient for you, all from the comfort of your own home.

2. If you are currently taking ESL courses at a local school or studying ESL abroad, you may want additional help or practice. Online ESL courses can be a perfect supplement to your current program.

3. Some ESL students simply feel more comfortable studying in an online environment, and don’t feel the need to go the traditional classroom route.

No matter the reason, there are plenty of online ESL program websites to choose from. But just like traditional ESL courses, it’s always smart to do your research first. Here are some important points to think about.

1. Quality of Instruction –The following questions are a good starting point in your research. a. Are your instructors native English speakers? b. Are the programs taught strictly in English or in your native language? c. Is the program live or are you watching pre-recorded video lessons? d. Can you ask questions during the lesson or afterwards? e. Is the program using qualityinstructional materials that are recognized in the ESL world? f. If an actual school runs theonline ESL program you’re considering, is that school accredited? g. If the program isn’t connected to a school, are there favorable reviews about it online? h. Are there social media channels (Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, etc.) associated with this program?

2. Variety of Programs –Does the website offer multiple levels of ESL in case you want to continue your studies? What about

TOEFL and TESOL? Do they have university preparation courses or specialty English courses like Englishfor Businesspeople, English for Medical Professionals, etc.?

3. Ease of Website Use – This one is extremely important, because you could find the perfect online ESL program with amazing instructors, but if the website never works properly, then none of that matters! Is the navigability intuitive and user-friendly? Doesthe support team return your emails and support tickets in a quick and efficient manner? Are streaming videos running smoothly?

Yes, there are a lot of factors to consider when choosing an online ESL program. And to find the best fit, you must do your due diligence. But the amazing thing is, through the power of the Internet, you can enroll in a quality English language program from anywhere around the world.
