How Do You Get Common Sense? To program or re-
program your brain to use common sensepractice, practice,
practice! exercise your common
sense by doing logic puzzles and puzzles involving manipulation of shapes. (Jigsaw puzzles come to mind.)
Common Sense is also developed through experience and exposure to
experience.
Step 1: PASTTHINK • Think of a similar situation either you have experienced
yourself, or have been exposed to. • Be sure that your perception of the situation is based on
fact, rather than emotion. • Compare the situation with your memory of past
experience. This often happens without conscious thought.
Step 2: PRESENTTHINK • Think of options to use in this situation. • Assimilate the present facts, consider the alternatives, and
compare with past experiences. • Come to a conclusion about which option is the most
viable.
Step 3: FUTURETHINK • Determine if the present situation will deviate from past
experience during the application of the chosen option. • Determine the implications of the option you have chosen.
What effect will the option chosen have upon the situation?
• If this is the desired outcome, then GO FOR IT!
