What is Science?
•Science is a system of knowledge based on facts and principles
![Page 2: What is Science? Science is a system of knowledge based on facts and principles](https://reader033.vdocuments.site/reader033/viewer/2022061603/56649eb25503460f94bb88c3/html5/thumbnails/2.jpg)
Biology
• Is the Science of Life!• It deals with organisms-better known as an individual living things
![Page 3: What is Science? Science is a system of knowledge based on facts and principles](https://reader033.vdocuments.site/reader033/viewer/2022061603/56649eb25503460f94bb88c3/html5/thumbnails/3.jpg)
How does all of this take place?
![Page 4: What is Science? Science is a system of knowledge based on facts and principles](https://reader033.vdocuments.site/reader033/viewer/2022061603/56649eb25503460f94bb88c3/html5/thumbnails/4.jpg)
By Observations
• Scientist make observations using their senses and technology.
• Sometimes the technology does not exist to make the needed observations.

What is Technology?
![Page 6: What is Science? Science is a system of knowledge based on facts and principles](https://reader033.vdocuments.site/reader033/viewer/2022061603/56649eb25503460f94bb88c3/html5/thumbnails/6.jpg)
Technology
• Technology is the application of science to meet human needs.
![Page 7: What is Science? Science is a system of knowledge based on facts and principles](https://reader033.vdocuments.site/reader033/viewer/2022061603/56649eb25503460f94bb88c3/html5/thumbnails/7.jpg)
Scientist investigate
![Page 8: What is Science? Science is a system of knowledge based on facts and principles](https://reader033.vdocuments.site/reader033/viewer/2022061603/56649eb25503460f94bb88c3/html5/thumbnails/8.jpg)
Scientist Observe
• Paying close attention to details scientist look for connections and patterns in nature.
![Page 9: What is Science? Science is a system of knowledge based on facts and principles](https://reader033.vdocuments.site/reader033/viewer/2022061603/56649eb25503460f94bb88c3/html5/thumbnails/9.jpg)
Scientist also Experiment
Using • Scientific law
Scientific law is a summary of an observed natural event
Using• Scientific Theory
Scientific theory is a tested possible
explanation of a natural event
![Page 10: What is Science? Science is a system of knowledge based on facts and principles](https://reader033.vdocuments.site/reader033/viewer/2022061603/56649eb25503460f94bb88c3/html5/thumbnails/10.jpg)
Make-up of Scientific Theory
![Page 11: What is Science? Science is a system of knowledge based on facts and principles](https://reader033.vdocuments.site/reader033/viewer/2022061603/56649eb25503460f94bb88c3/html5/thumbnails/11.jpg)
Scientific Theory must:
• Explain observation simply and clearly.
• Experiments must illustrate the theory and be repeatable.
• Be able to predict from the theory.
![Page 12: What is Science? Science is a system of knowledge based on facts and principles](https://reader033.vdocuments.site/reader033/viewer/2022061603/56649eb25503460f94bb88c3/html5/thumbnails/12.jpg)
Make-up of Scientific Law
• Laws just summarize observations about nature or a natural event.
• Laws do not explain how or why something happens.
![Page 13: What is Science? Science is a system of knowledge based on facts and principles](https://reader033.vdocuments.site/reader033/viewer/2022061603/56649eb25503460f94bb88c3/html5/thumbnails/13.jpg)
Models
![Page 14: What is Science? Science is a system of knowledge based on facts and principles](https://reader033.vdocuments.site/reader033/viewer/2022061603/56649eb25503460f94bb88c3/html5/thumbnails/14.jpg)
Critical Thinking
• Applying logic and reason to observations and conclusions.
![Page 15: What is Science? Science is a system of knowledge based on facts and principles](https://reader033.vdocuments.site/reader033/viewer/2022061603/56649eb25503460f94bb88c3/html5/thumbnails/15.jpg)
Scientific Method
![Page 16: What is Science? Science is a system of knowledge based on facts and principles](https://reader033.vdocuments.site/reader033/viewer/2022061603/56649eb25503460f94bb88c3/html5/thumbnails/16.jpg)
Problem
![Page 17: What is Science? Science is a system of knowledge based on facts and principles](https://reader033.vdocuments.site/reader033/viewer/2022061603/56649eb25503460f94bb88c3/html5/thumbnails/17.jpg)
To solve the problem
• You ask a question.
• You may gather data.
• You form a hypothesis; a possible answer that you can test in some way. Usually a “if” , “then” statement
• ..\Power Points Sem 1\Hypothesis.ppt
![Page 18: What is Science? Science is a system of knowledge based on facts and principles](https://reader033.vdocuments.site/reader033/viewer/2022061603/56649eb25503460f94bb88c3/html5/thumbnails/18.jpg)
Testing Hypotheses
• Scientist test hypothesis by doing experiments.
• Good experiments test only one variable at a time.
Variable is anything that can change in an experiment. (Many variables exist in this picture.)
![Page 19: What is Science? Science is a system of knowledge based on facts and principles](https://reader033.vdocuments.site/reader033/viewer/2022061603/56649eb25503460f94bb88c3/html5/thumbnails/19.jpg)
The Way Science Works
![Page 20: What is Science? Science is a system of knowledge based on facts and principles](https://reader033.vdocuments.site/reader033/viewer/2022061603/56649eb25503460f94bb88c3/html5/thumbnails/20.jpg)
What is an experiment?
• the act of conducting a controlled test or investigation
• the testing of an idea; "it was an experiment in living"; "not all experimentation is done in laboratories"
• to conduct a test or investigation; "We are experimenting with the new drug in order to fight this disease"
• a venture at something new or different; "as an experiment he decided to grow a beard"
![Page 21: What is Science? Science is a system of knowledge based on facts and principles](https://reader033.vdocuments.site/reader033/viewer/2022061603/56649eb25503460f94bb88c3/html5/thumbnails/21.jpg)
What is a control?
• control condition: a standard against which other conditions can be compared in a scientific experiment; "the control condition was inappropriate for the conclusions he wished to draw"
• determining all factors that can affect the outcome of an experiment, and setting all those factors the same except for the one factor that is varied.
![Page 22: What is Science? Science is a system of knowledge based on facts and principles](https://reader033.vdocuments.site/reader033/viewer/2022061603/56649eb25503460f94bb88c3/html5/thumbnails/22.jpg)
THEORIES - ExplainIn Science, a Hypothesis is the explanation for the events that have been observed. Scientists create hypotheses to try and explain the observed behavior of the world. They do so by creating an explanation that can be tested (an hypothesis). If a lot of evidence (data) is collected to support the hypothesis, then scientists accept the hypothesis as a good explanation, and it may, given even more testing, become an accepted theory.

Quick Review• Scientific Method- a system of asking
questions, developing explanations, and testing the explanations
• Hypothesis- a possible explanation of a problem or question
• Experiment- a controlled test• Control- part of the experiment not being
tested and is used for comparison• Variable- any part of the experiment that
can change• Theory- logical explanation of an
observation

Units of Measurement
• There was a need for a common language for science and that language is math and it is named the International System of Units or SI.
