like PDF/A or PDF/VT?

PDF/X
★ exchange format for printing★ closely connected to printing standards
(ISO 12647 series)★ widely implemented and used★ endorsed by many groups★ its value disputed by some
PDF/A★ format for long term archiving★ targeted at «document industry»★ very strong in Europe
★ strongest in Italy!★ compatible with PDF/X
PDF/E
★ working format for engineering industry★ allows 3D models★ difference towards regular PDF too small★ barely used
PDF/VT
★ exchange format for ★ variable data printing★ transactional printing
★ based on PDF/X-4
★ will challenge PPML, AFP, etc.★ richer imaging model★ compatible with predominant document
viewing technology★ good potential in specific market
PDF/UA
★ UA = universal accessibility★ goal: make PDFs much more accessible
★ not only for people with disabilities★ can be used on top of all other PDF standards★ brings accessibility already common for web pages and
eBooks (DAISY) to the PDF world★ initial push will come from government agencies★ smart companies will join★ accessibility will trigger substantial secondary business
PDF/EA
★ upcoming ‘archiving’ version of PDF/E★ archiving is highly relevant in engineering/
manufacturing/architecure (regulations)★ much higher likelihood of wide spread adoption
(than for just PDF/E)
Adobe PDF 1.0-1.7 ISO PDF 1.7 ISO PDF 2.0
★ Adobe PDF 1.7 + ‘ISO-ification’ = ISO PDF 1.7★ PDF format now ‘owned’ by ISO
Adobe PDF 1.0-1.7 ISO PDF 1.7 ISO PDF 2.0
★ Adobe PDF 1.7 + ‘optimization’ = ISO PDF 1.7★ PDF format now ‘owned’ by ISO
★ further development through ISO TC 171 SC 2 WG 8★ strong influence by Adobe
... but all decisions under control of ISO working group★ next version will be PDF 2.0 – expected for 2012

Do we really need so many PDF/X flavors?
PDF/X
★ PDF/X-1a: ★ CMYK + spot★ works★ no transparency, no layers
PDF/X
★ PDF/X-3: ★ CMYK + spot + ICC based color★ works, except
★ where workflows or users are not fully ICC enabled
★ where equipment is too old★ no transparency, no layers
PDF/X
★ PDF/X-4: ★ CMYK + spot + ICC based color★ allows transparency and layers★ works
★ very well if modern PDF RIPs are used★ printers without modern PDF RIPs
★ use flattening (not worse than PDF/X-1a)
A word about transparency...
★ flattening ★ destroys internal structure of PDF pages★ often makes PDFs extremely complex★ discards searchability★ impedes last minute edits
★ nobody can escape transparency★ use of transparency is rapidly growing★ modern workflows/RIPs required to cope
★ thus PDF/X-4 more adequate in the long run
PDF/X
