Kelley School third graders recently participated in a nine-session Arts-In- Education residency with Young Audiences of Rochester in which they learned how the culture of Ghana has been shaped by its geography, history and traditions. Working with theatre artist Brian Coughlin and their third grade teachers, students explored the essential question: What makes the world community of Ghana unique? During the nine sessions with students, Coughlin worked with students on developing a variety of theatre skills including acting, reading and presentation skills. Students then created their own scripts that explain the various aspects of Ghana. The culminating event took place December 12 in the Kelley School gymnasium where six student stations focused on the symbols of Ghana, the economy, daily life, sports and games, education and culture. As part of the event, family members and peers were given Kelley Educational Airways tickets to enter the gymnasium where they were welcomed by the song "Funga Alafia" sung by the presenting third grade classes. The students sang with the drum accompaniment of Kalonda Greene, a dance and music artist. What Is Life Like In Ghana?

After being welcomed, the audience embarked on a six station tour of Ghana where students were dressed in a color representing Ghana's flag and props were used to help create authenticity.

“Again this year, the students did an amazing job working

with Mr. Coughlin,” Robyn Ross-Squirrell, district Enrichment and Arts-In-Education Coordinator

said. ”This opportunity for the students is more than worth all the effort that went into the non-traditional unit of study. Bringing the Arts into our

curriculum is a wonderful way to bring history to life.”
