WHAT IS GNCTR?The Great Northern Concrete Toboggan Race (GNCTR) is a national engineering competition that brings together over 500 students from various disciplines and institutions across Canada. Students are tasked with building a toboggan equipped with a concrete running surface. They must race these toboggans down a tubing hill while carrying five riders and weighing under 350 lbs. Reaching speeds of over 60 km/h, each toboggan must have fully functional braking and steering systems. Teams are judged in multiple categories ranging from technical design & innovation to overall team spirit. There are two main events: Technical Exhibition (Tech-Ex) and Race Day.

Tech-Ex is an expo where teams showcase their toboggans and present their designs in fun, interactive displays. Sponsors can get exposure to students, industry professionals and media.

During Race Day, teams head to a nearby ski hill to compete for best steering, best braking, and fastest speed. These races draw public spectators and often get national media coverage.

The GNCTR 2020 Organizing Committee has extensive experience with event planning and management. Our members are previous executives for various events including the University of Toronto’s Engineering Orientation Week, the 68th Canadian Chemical Engineering Conference, and the 2015 Canadian National Concrete Canoe Competition. We have also amassed a collective 40 years of GNCTR experience in many different capacities. With the proven experience that we possess, we are very excited to run an

unforgettable competition.

BackgroundGNCTR is the longest running engineering competition in Canada. The competition began in Red Deer, Alberta in 1975 and was co-hosted by the University of Alberta and University of Calgary. The competition has been hosted by different Canadian universities every year since, typically alternating between Eastern and Western universities. For the first time in the competition’s 45 year history, the University of Toronto has the honour of hosting the Great Northern Concrete Toboggan Race in 2020. With Toronto as one of the largest cities in North America, we expect GNCTR 2020 to be the biggest yet!
