I. Earth Science – is the study of the earth and the universe around it.

A. Four Branches of Earth Science

1. Geology – the study of the origin, history, and structure of the solid earth and the processes that shape it.

a. Geologist – very useful in searching for new deposits of coal, oil, natural gases and other useful minerals. May also study the forces within the earth to better understand and forecast volcanic eruptions and earthquakes.

2.Oceanography – the study of the earth’s oceans.

a. Oceanographer – may study ocean floor, tides, waves, and marine life (plants and animals).

3.Meteorology – the study of the earth’s atmosphere.

a. Meteorologist – uses satellites and radar to study atmospheric conditions that produce weather. Name some of these atmospheric variables.

4. Astronomy – the study of the universe beyond the earth.a. Astronomer – studies stars, motions of planets, the sun, and the moon. Space probes provide much information.
