What is Canvas? In 2020, Canvas was introduced as the SSC College Learning Management System (LMS) that supports teachers in delivering a differentiated approach to learning online. It is a cloud-based application which enables students and teachers to access the tools they need for learning and teaching wherever they are. It also enables parents/carers to be enrolled as an observer thereby providing access to student results, feedback, assessment tasks and course materials. This system will work alongside our current Student Information System (SIS), Compass, which will still be used for College administration needs such as roll marking, event permissions, communications, reporting etc. The introduction of Canvas for 2020 has come about for a few core reasons:

• The Learning and Teaching aspects of Compass had not progressed as we hoped they would. It was time consuming for teachers and students, especially in the marking and feedback of work

• Parent feedback indicated a desire to improve the ease of access and quality of information about student learning progress

• Canvas is utilised in thousands of educational institutions internationally and has high level support and innovative features that we are excited about using and sharing with you

Important Information to note about Canvas Access

• As the parent/carer login process is different from students, links within notifications will take you to an error page. Please only log in via https://surfcoastsecondarycollege.instructure.com/login/canvas or the App instead of clicking notification links.

• Only email addresses registered with Compass will work in this process. If you receive notifications

from Compass in your email, this is the email to use. If you do not have an email registered with the school, please contact our Administration team at [email protected]

• Whilst students are enrolled in Canvas, VCAL will not be delivered via Canvas until Semester 2.

• Your account name will appear as your child’s name. If you have multiple students enrolled at

SCSC. or just one of your enrolled child’s name will be associated with your account, but you will still have access to all children.

• Canvas is used to provide learning tasks and feedback, our official reporting tool remains Compass for Semester 1, 2020.

How to set up your Canvas Parent/Carer Account

Step 1: On a computer go to https://surfcoastsecondarycollege.instructure.com/login/canvas OR You can download the Canvas parent app. In the app, when you are asked to select school, type “Surf Coast Secondary College” and choose the “Surf Coast Secondary College (Parents)” option.



Step 2: Please click the forgotten password option, which is the key step in this process. You must use the email address you have linked to your Compass account to log in, this will act as your login. Then press “Request Password” If using a computer/web browser go to the log on site, and click Forgot Password

If Using the App: After choosing Surf Coast Secondary College (parents), click forgotten password.

*** Please note: Only email addresses registered with Compass will work in this process. If you receive notifications from Compass in your email, this is the email to use. If you do not have an email registered with the school, please contact our Administration team at [email protected]



Step 3: The password should be sent to the email you provided, and then you can go back to https://surfcoastsecondarycollege.instructure.com/login/canvas on a computer, or to the app to log in. If the password does not arrive within 30 mins, please check your Junk or Spam folder before repeating the process. Click the link in the password email to choose a password, your “Login” will remain your email. Step 4: Setting up your notifications is important to ensure you receive only the important information. We recommend only turning on the notifications labelled in red, but these are fully customisable. Notification settings can be found under your account menu. You can also choose to turn off all notifications.

***Important note on Notifications***

As parent logins are different from student logins, links within notifications will take you to an error page. Instead, please either log in via https://surfcoastsecondarycollege.instructure.com/login/canvas or the App only to see the content the notification is referencing.



Step 5: Once logged in you should see all of your student’s subjects on your Dashboard. There will also be an Orientation Course that has important information on how to use Canvas, and stay involved with your student’s learning. The black lines will be where you will see your child’s name, which is helpful if you have multiple enrolments.



Step 6: If you need assistance once you are logged into Canvas, click the “Need Help?” icon or menu. Here you will find a direct email address to our IT department, the school phone number and a link to the Orientation Course.



What can I see in my child’s Canvas Dashboard?

Student work and Feedback The Marks section shows all assignments that have been issued to a student, and the feedback they received. You can click on the task to see the student’s submission and more information about the task.

Learning Tasks and Modules The course resources and materials issued to students can be seen within the Modules tab. You can click into the lessons and learning tasks within each subject, just select which subject you would like to view from your Dashboard.
