Timeline of historically relevant events (1) Dr. King joins a movement called “the bus boycott”

following the arrest of Rosa Parks on December 1, 1955. On December 5, 1955 he was elected president of the

Montgomery Improvement Association. He became a spokesperson for the Montgomery bus boycott.

November 13, 1956, bus segregation was deemed unconstitutional by The Supreme Court.

Dr. King formed the Southern Christian Leadership Conference to combat injustices such as school segregation.

The U.S. Congress passed a Civil Rights Act. This was the first such act since reconstruction.

Timeline of historically relevant events (3) CAUSE AND EFFECT April 1963 - Dr. King writes, “Letter from Birmingham Jail” criticizing

the government for allowing racial injustices.

May 1963 - The Birmingham Agreement is passed. Stores, restaurants, and schools would from then on be

desegregated.
