To be completely honest, Kioni didn't much care where he wasliving as long as Kythen was around as his (often-unwilling)bodyguard. And besides, it didn't seem like he needed a

bodyguard around here anyway. There were no Canoriles aroundto threaten his life. Of course, he still had his profession. Or, hewould. If he could find a place to set up shop. And access to thecomponents he needed.

The wolf-like kobold bounded down Needle Street, peering intowindows, looking for anything that r esembled an apothecary. Hewas muttering aloud about what components he needed and,"Where in heck is the apothecary?!"

Something shiny caught his eye through a window and hebounded over and put his face up to the glass, cupping hishands around his eyes to see better. Was that a cassis-shell? Hescurried through the door and started nosing around the shop(somewhat literally--he does have a long nose, after all). Hekept stopping and glancing around a bit nervously, but made noeffort to actively seek any person--such as the shopkeeper--out.

Yesterday had been veryy interesting for mer, what with hersudden and rather unwanted bond to an overly stubborn HelsynVargul named Breslin. What the hell kind of Helsyn was namedBreslin?! Sighing, she walked down the street with her Shafaupon her shoulder and her still-young Wyvern, scratching Keevaevery so often upon the head, and trying to restrain Daly from jumping onto the s treets and under busy peoples ' feet.

That was when she saw a shop ful l of odds and ends thatseemed to have come from other peoples' homeworlds. Grinningto herself, mer peered in through the glass to search outanything useful. When the l it tle wyvern at her s ide sent amental image of a beautiful l ittle section of unwanted jewelry,m immediately opened the door and went ins ide, a small j ingl ing bel l going off above her head. It was a good thingBreslin was gone.

Walking over to the stand of bracelets and necklaces, thevampire started to look through them. Keeva sent her a mentalimage of one of the jangly ones of obnoxious blues and purplesand reds and greens and yellows. Giggling to herself, she heldup the gaudy necklace, and put it over the Wyvern's head. SaidWyvern cooed and preened happily; she knew she l iked thisjewellry, and Emer knew that since it was cheap (and very likely

she could sneak it out under the lump of fur that was Daly) itwould be all right to indulge.

That was, until an anxious and angsty seeming man walked in.Man? Was it a man? Yes, she decided finally, it was a man. Soshe walked over with a faint look of concern on her face. "Needhelp finding anything? I don't work here, but you looklike... you're trying to find something..." mer murmuredhelpfully.

Kioni had found a bin full of odds and ends and had lifted up thelid and was sort of balanced on the edge on his belly, rummaging through the contents of the bin with the lid slowlysettling to rest on his back. Suddenly, he heard a voice rightbehind him, asking if he needed help. With a startled squawk,he flailed about but only succeeded in falling INTO the bin. Withanother squeal and a muffled *bamph* the furry kobold blinkedout of the inside and onto the top of the lid. He bounced about abit on the lid and chattered in agitated kobold at the womanwho'd startled him.

Not that it took him long to calm down. Once he did, his nosetold him that the person in front of him wasn't normal. Shesmelled sort of like a vampire, but not quite the same. "Who'reyou? I'm trying to find shockpowder, dried squealers, balassanfins, and cress. I also need a new workshop since I can't seem tofind my old one, so I'll need a bunch of other supplies. And Iswear I saw a cassis-shell in here..." It was one of his longeststatements ever, and he was reminded of the cassis-shell, whichhe promptly started scanning the shop for again.

Then he spotted it. It was larger than any he had ever seen andhe squealed excitedly. Forgetting about the woman, he sprangtoward the shell (a giant tortoise shell), taking a haphazardpath over and around several objects to get to it and amazingly, managing to knock anything breakable over. "CASSIS-SHELL!"he squealed. "Have you ever seen one this big? This is giant! Thisis PERFECT!"

Then he tried to repeat his course back to the bin he'd firstencountered the vampire-like woman, rather unsuccessfully andfell off of one counter with a thud. After a moment of silence,he groaned and scrabbled back to his feet and stood on tiptoe topeer over the top of the counter, suddenly remembering therewas someone else in the room. "Heavy," he said, trying to not

    be embarrassed.

"Do you know if there are any empty workshops around that I

Emer just stared. Stared, stared, stared. Now, this man waseven stranger than that genderless being she had met the otherday. Still, she nonetheless wasn't going to run away screaming just because he was a lizard-wolf-dwarf. That would be rude;after all, she couldn't very well call herself unintimidating, couldshe? No, she had fangs, crazy-ass ears, and a big scary Vargulrunning around with her now.

Instead of doing anything l ike that, she leaned back againstnon-breakable objects, watched him with raised eyebrows, and

stayed silent. After all, he seemed to do enough talking for fivepeople, and did it quite quickly as well. Sometimes she couldn'ttell what he was saying because certain words just meldedtogether in his hurried speech patterns.

Keeva, beside her, sent a big huge question mark and the imageof a little man running around in a circle; thankfully, it was onlydirected to Emer. The little Wyvern had some manners, at least, and sensibility; what Daly the Shafa did not have was either ofthose, and at the little Kobuld's sudden outburst of speech, heexploded he was so overwhelmed, littering glitter and confettieverywhere.

Luckily for all of them, the shopkeeper was nowhere in sight;she really had no idea where they were. Instead, all she saidonce the creature seemed to be quiet was a soft, "At the endof the street, on the corner."

Kioni didn't really hear Emer's answer because he suddenlyrealized the creature he'd mistaken for a strange hat was gone. And in its place? SPARKLIES! Moving sparklies that seemed tobe building on each other, which was definitely odd. He hadn'treally registered the little pop as the creature had explodedduring his chattering, so he hadn't made the connection yet. However, he immediately began trying to scoop up the sparklybits into his tortoise shell, after he dragged the basin, nearlyhalf as large as he was himself, around the counters. To his

frustration, some of the sparkly bits squirmed and jumped oftheir own free will to elude his grabby hands (or to escape fromthe shell).

Kioni was very sad when he realized that only a couple of thesparklies he'd grabbed were still in his cassis-shell. As would beexpected (if one knew anything about dogs), he became verydejected and plunked down on the floor and stared moroselyinto the shell, watching another sparkly bit inch away from him.

Just as abruptly, however, he realized what the not-vampireperson next to him had said about a workshop--that there wasan empty one at the end of the street, on a corner--and he wassuddenly quite happy again. He grabbed the lip of the shell andstarted to drag it to what appeared to be the main counterwhere he could pay for his acquisition and ask about some ofthe other things he was looking for.

With no shopkeeper in sight, the spastic kobold scrambled uponto the counter (after turning the shell over to use it as a sortof stepping stool) and started pounding the bell on the counter.

"Alright, alright, I heard you the first ti--,"the shopkeepercame out of the back and stopped to stare at the creature on

his counter. The Ferengi shook his head and muttered somethingabout now he's seen everything. "Off my counter!"he barked, causing Kioni to squeak and blink, reappearing on the floorbehind two sets of shelves back. That thing had demon teeth! And its head was so funny-shaped. It had to be a demon. Notthat Kioni had any experience with demons whatsoever, so hewouldn't know one if he saw one anyway.

After a moment of terrified cowering, Kioni decided that thedemon wasn't going to eat him, so he crept out of his "hiding"place and back up to the counter. Want this. How much?

After a bit of haggling, they settled on a price of 8-and-5. Of

course, neither had said anything about what units they weretalking about, so when Kioni handed over 8 silvers and 5coppers stamped with his house's stamp, the Ferengi wasunderstandably annoyed. However, rather than get snarly aboutit (which, he now knew, would frighten his customer out of thestore), he just checked to see that they were real silver andcopper, accepted the payment, and then turned his charms toEmer. "Well, hello little lady. I have a beautiful set oftourmaline earrings that would look just lovely on yourears."(Clearly, this Ferengi male hadn't seen any Ferengifemales in a long time, and Emer's oversized ears were theclosest he'd come in a while.)

Kioni, in the meantime, wasn't done dealing with the demon.

"Wait, there's more. I need shockpowder, dried squealers, balassan fins, and cress. Where do you keep them?"

The Ferengi glared at him, annoyed at being interrupted, thenpuzzled by the creature's demands. "You want what? Cressyou can get at one of the farmers' stalls, but what is

    shockpowder- dried-squealers-balassan-fins?"

Kioni ranted for a second in Kobold before switching back to thecommon tongue and forcing himself to speak slowly. He'dforgotten that some people couldn't talk that fast, although hewould have expected a demon to be able to understand him. Herepeated the list (less cress) slowly. The shopkeeper shook hishead. "I have no idea what any of those things are. I've

got some multi-colored powders, some dried apples, and Ithink I've got a few perch fins around here somewhere..."The Ferengi proceeded to produce a tray full of jars of neon-

colored fingerprint powder, a bag of slightly-moldy dried applerings, and several loose perch fins. Unfortunately for Kioni, these looked similar enough to what he was looking for that hepurchased them without hesitation.

Now Kioni was done with the demon and also turned to Emer."Show me the shop. I want to see if it's worth buying." No one

ever said he had very good manners.

Emer was... quite easily persuaded to take a look at thetourmaline earring set that was pointed out, though she ignoredthe rest of the Kobuld's dealings with the large-eared very tan

demon shopkeeper. Instead, she grinned, thinking that she wasgetting a steal! With her feminine wiles, she was most likelygoign to get a bit off of the price of the earrings, and she stillhad the necklace she had taken a look at safely tucked away.Ah, well, she felt bad and so procured it and placed a few othertidbits of jewelry of the table.

One never knew when a worthy Tzingane might come along, orwhen you might need to take the silver chains and multicoloredstones out of a necklace to help decorate a particularly gaudytop, right? So, after a bit of her own haggling, continuing toignore the Kobuld, with a grin and a swift kiss to the Ferengi'scheek (plus a promise to stop by again) she was off with herpurchases in a small bag, swinging from her hand happily, asshe beckoned for the Kobuld to follow.

"My name is Emer, and I myself was thinking ofpurchasing this property, which is how I have come toknow about its existence. I, however, find all of mymonies funneling into the upkeep of my shinies, and soyou may take a look at it. It is spacious, has plentyshelves and storage areas, a nice little office room in theback, and well. Anything you could look for in an emptyshop, right?"

And so, reaching the end of the street, she showed it off with aflourish of the hand.

The kobold could barely keep up with the much taller (and long-legged) not-vampire-lady as she showed him the way down tothe workshop she'd mentioned. Of course, that wouldn'tnormally be a problem (seeing as his spastic nature provided

him with an overabundance of vim and vigor), but he WASdragging a very large shell full of the other odd bits he'dpurchased. "Name's Kioni. Kioni Mouru, of Aireales House.

    Mage."

Well, Kioni didn't know what an office was (they'd always calledthem "studies" back home--and they were something he'd neverbothered with anyway), but the rest of it sounded perfectlylovely. And the fact that it was built of stone made it that muchmore perfect. Although he wouldn't openly admit that many of

his spells backfire (literally), he recognizes the problem andlikes to plan accordingly. And besides, both sides of his heritagemuch preferred good, solid stone caves to flimsy woodenhouses.

"It's PERFECT!" the little spaz squealed happily. He bounded upto the porch (or as much bounding as permitted when dragginga cassis-shell, a grip on which he hadn't relinquished) andpeered in the only window low enough for him to see into. Butwas the little kobold going to stop there? Ohh, no. He had a bitof an argument with the door, finally getting it open anddragging his belongings inside where he left them andproceeded to examine the interior of the shop, temporarilyforgetting all about Emer.

After a "thorough" inspection (of anything low enough to inspector which could be climbed up to), he sought out Emer again."You said you were going to buy it. Do you know the person whois selling it?"

Staring at the Kobold, she remained outside of the shop, staringthrough the window as the little thing started to look through.Keeva sent a mental picture of a tiktok toy spinning around inspastic circles, squeaking too fast to understand, and thenrunning off the tracks, with those little wheels spinning roundand round and round uselessly. Chuckling to herself, shescratched Keeva's head before glancing up at Kioni who was nowaddressing her.

"No, not personally. I hadn't been able to contact them, but I think one of them works at the Creature Stall now. Itwas jointly owned by a couple, after all." Shruggingnegligently, she returned to just leaning and looking around atthe people hustling between shops and stalls, the creaturescausing chaos and bringing light, as well, to the little street.

Kioni truly had no idea he was being ridiculed. But then, henever had. He really was oblivious to anything outside hisimmediate realm of attention (which, right now, was obtaining aworkshop and a safe place to sleep--somewhere that wasn't withKythen who tended to get extremely annoyed when Kioni wantedto sleep with him and would usually sneak away once the koboldwas asleep).

He bounced over in front of Emer, stared for a minute at thelittle exploding-glittery-confetti creature on her shoulderlongingly, and then demanded (in typical single-minded Kionifashion), "What is Creature Stall? Where is Creature Stall?"

But then he became distracted by the little exploding-glittery-confetti creature again and remembered a couple of questionshe'd had earlier. "And what are you? And what is that?" This lastincluded a quick little jab to indicate the exploding-glittery-confetti creature. "And that?" he added with another jab, thistime at the wyvern (which he hadn't been able to settle on awordy description of yet).

Giggling to herself, Emer said slowly, "The Creature Stall ishow you can buy little critters like these when a bondingis not occurring. You earn money by selling things, sameas with anywhere else. This little guy is called a Shafa; heis a Pinata Shafa, to be exact, and his name is Daly. Thispretty girl is Keeva. She is a Terror Wyvern." Smiling, shesaid patiently, "It is right over there, at the end of thisstreet. When you bond these creautres, they can get intoyour mind. They can either speak in your mind or sendvague feelings and images. Keeva is a vague-mental-connector. Daly can speak a few works at a time at most."

Certainly not as many as this Kioni could speak in a row, hmm?

Kioni was enough distracted by this point that he didn't realizeone of his questions hadn't been answered. He'd remember iteventually. Just...maybe not for a few days. He bobbed his inunderstanding of the bond (he missed Eidek, his little sauroswho apparently hadn't been brought here with him).

The concept of being paid by selling stuff was a little confusingto the kobold. Oh, he knew what the concept was, but he'dalways been a part of a totem (except for the brief period

between when the Canoriles totem had wiped out the Kunikostotem and when the Aireales had taken him i n), and as amember of a totem, he had earned a stipend that never changed

unless he graduated to a new level of mastery in his position asa mage.

"People will pay money for me to do spells for them?" he asked, almost incredulously. "I'm not sure I can do that. I'm used tobeing part of a totem...where are the totems here, anyway? Andwhat are they like? What are their names, and who are members

of which totem? Which totem would do I need to approach formembership?" Oh, he'd gotten over the idea that no one knewwho the Canoriles and Aireales totems were (and of course, noone mentioned the Kunikos totem anymore), but he couldn'twrap his distractable mind around the idea that there WEREN'Tany totems at all. After all, it was all he'd ever known.

And speaking of distractable, his stomach decided at thatmoment to announce to the world that it was empty. For such atiny creature, his belly was quite capable of making itself heard.Although he would likely come back to the creature stall later(and would probably attempt to buy a creature with his golds, silvers, and coppers), right now, he wanted something to eat. He'd worry about purchasing the building later, food was much

    more important at the moment.

He bounded over to the edge of the portico and scrambled uponto the railing to peer down the street looking for a place toeat. He spotted several, but didn't know which ones would besafe for him to eat in. He turned back to his new best friend (orat least, that's how he thought of her) to ask for advice."Hungry. Which is the best place to eat?" Remembering that hewould need coins to buy more stuff, he added, "Which ischeapest?"

Grinning at her nwe little lizard-friend, she shook her head, reached out and pattted him, and then pointed to a vendor'sstall that sold both cooked and raw meats and vegetables, but

never fruits. It got too hot out on a good amount of days for thefruits, and the buzzing insects that resembled flies (a goodamount of which WERE flies) also flew around making such athing impossible for a vendor to hawk in his wares.

Upon the kobold's rather loud request both verbally and throughhis belly, Emer put her hand in between his shoulder blades andstarted to steer him towards the food stall she'd seen. "I'vegot some extra monies. Here, what do you want? It's mytreat, since you aren't used to the currency here yet. Oh,and as for the totem thing. Sorry, totally forgot to answeryou there. On the one hand, Kioni felt incredibly guilty for taking

advantage of the offer for food. On the other, he really didn'thave all that much himself and, from the sounds of things, noteveryone would accept his coins. Just because he was hungry, though, didn't make it easy to decide on what to eat. It tookhim several minutes to settle on something that resembled aflugel leg and was apparently smoked and grilled. While he ate(relatively quietly, at least as far chattering goes), he ponderedthe idea of selling things for money. Or monies. Or whateverthey were called around here. What would he sell?

Needless to say, the diminutive creature didn't feel at allcomfortable without the normal totem structure he was used to.After all, he was a mage, not a fighter! How was he supposed tobe protected if there was no totem with its soldiers to protect

him? "I don't like not having totems. How do the people whoaren't fighters protect themselves without a totem's soldiers toguard them?"

She,herself, was eating some of her meat from her shish kabob, before gently nomming on some of the vegetables, leaningagainst a wall and people-watching as she hung out with hernew friend. Huh.

Emer was a friend now, right? He could tell her? He ponderedthis question for a fraction of a second before deciding he could. And it would answer her question, too. "The totems are alwaysfighting. Territory, racial differences, access to the best crafters, anything. The Canoriles wiped out my totem. My family and Iescaped only because of the soldiers of our totem. And totem-lessmages are very, very vulnerable..."

He stopped then, wondering if he'd said too much too loudly. Helooked around furtively. He didn't think anything of what he'dtold Emer, but he was more worried that someone else hadoverheard and would now start threatening him. What hewanted more than anything was a friend who would protect himand his shop.

Ah, so she saw how his world was. It was similar to her blackages earth. Smiling, she knelt down so that she was roughly onlevel with him. Having finished her grilled food, she placed thestick on the ground for the Shafa to nibble at some scraps andplay with it. Looking him in the eyes, her hands on hisshoulders, she decided to say something very serioues (for him)even though it meant virtually nothing (to her).
