Analysing trailers

The trailer which I am analysing is The Woman In Black. The opening of the trailer starts with two production company names showing just before they show anything which has smoke at the back of the company names to give an idea of what the genre may be. It then comes across a sound of a train with it hooting out smoke and this comes together with the company names they were showing. It begins with a establishing shot that shows an overview of the train passing by without the sunset creating atmosphere as this looks peaceful and calm with a voiceover of the man speaking and this lets the audience know who the voice over is as it moves in. A close up of Daniel Radcliffe is shown to see what his emotions are and the image is quite dull and looks very ghostly which starts to show sign of the genre.

There is the haunted house shown where by looking at it, the audience straight up knows that this is a horror/thriller movie as the house looks so haunted as it is grey with lots of trees and woods which shows the audience also that this house is in the middle of nowhere. The trees and braches are covering up the view of the house which shows that if you ever go there, people will not even notice or will hardly be able to see you. An image of cross is shown as the train passes showing signs of dullness and making it the surrounding of the character feel the fear. A shot of the character is shown alone in front of the house which shows he is isolated and this makes the character vulnerable. It creates a mysterious dark atmosphere therefore this starts to engage the audience into knowing what will happen next.

There is a high angle shot shown in the house which seems to be grey and dull in the house suggesting that the house is spooky.

The music is peaceful and calm which makes it all smooth but as soon as he enters into the house, it all stops and tense music begins which scares the audience letting them know that something is about to happen. This also could mean that he isn't safe and is completely alone and anything can happen to him now.

Close ups start to begin as he walks around the house exploring all the things and what is around him and music starts to become tense and making the audience scared for the character. As he comes around, he spins a zoetrope, the audience start to look at the pictures which spin but not thinking that anything would happen but all of a sudden an image of a woman is shown which makes the audience jump as it is unexpected. When he looks in front of him, no-one is there which shows that there is ghosts in the house. The darkness in the house makes it seem frightening.

Other bits of the movie are shown scaring the audience as the small scary parts start to occur making the audience feel pressure for the main character making the audience wanting to know what will happen next and through all this, the movie starts to get faster with the pace of the trailer as it becomes faster making the audience feel at pressure.

They show a lot of black outs during this to make a bit from every part of the movie and this trailer is done non chronological order to and there isn't too much of the story given as this will give it all away but also put the audience off so if there is less shown, the audience will want to go and watch it.

An image of text is shown when all the scaring bits are shown and this gives the audience a good feel of the movie and wanting to go and watch the movie. The words make the movie sound really good as it says the most chilling ghost story which makes the movie stand out.

The trailer moves onto showing the problems which start

to happen in the movie which makes the audience think

what will happen to main character of the movie. In one of

the images, the character runs into the house and there is

an image of him alone surrounded by this haunted house

with ghosts which makes the audience feel sympathy for the

character.

Another image of text is shown and this says Daniel

Radcliffe which is the characters real name in life and this is

a well known name as the character of this film is famous

and known to the audience and this can also make the

audience want to go watch this movie. Many other shots of

text are shown such as Fear which makes the audience feel

afraid and then other small screens of text are shown like

Her, Curse and this allows the audience to get an idea of

what the movie is about as it has basically told that there is

a curse left at the house of a spirit.

This folds it up as the trailer finishes off of an image of

Daniel Radcliffe holding an axe and a candle in his hand

which shows he will go and fight the ghosts and finishes

there with a blank screen with the title of the film and ends

there finishing it with the audience wanting to watch the

movie.
