This week the Happy Hedgehogs got an opportunity to share our work with the school during Wednesday Share. We celebrated the writing that we have worked on for the last few weeks. Students learned about report writing and chose an animal related topic to become an expert on. Check out the slides from our presentation to see who became an expert on each animal!

The Sunbeams have been learning about argument writing. With each new genre of writing we learn about the stages. Argument writing has four stages: a thesis, reasons to support the thesis, evidence to support the reasons, and a reinforcement of the thesis. Students have been practicing by writing to family members and their teachers. See if you can find each stage of argument writing in their letter below. Next, students will use what they have learned to write letters about protecting animals.

January 13, 2021Dear Ms. Ashleigh,

We would like you to build a cat out of anything for fun. This is good for your concentration and patience and it is fun. We know this because we have built things.

We would also like for you to jump around 10 or 20 or 30 times. This will be fun for you. We know because we do it sometimes.

Can you jump around and build? We think this will be fun and it’s good exercise.

“I want to see the octopus go through the hole again!” We saw early on in our Animals theme that our students are major octopus fans. Who could blame them? Octopuses are great. The more we learn about them, the more incredible it seems that such an animal could exist. Did you know that octopuses have three hearts? That they can taste with their arms? That they can change color? This week we read the book Inky the Octopus, about an octopus who escaped an aquarium in New Zealand by crawling down a drain pipe. The looks on our students faces when they watch videos of octopuses say it all.The Ninjas will be spending the final weeks of this theme creating projects related to octopuses and other animals they’re interested in. They will also be writing arguments to protect octopuses by reducing plastic pollution in the ocean. Stay tuned!

After the disturbance in Washington DC last week, students shared things they saw on television, talked about with their families and asked questions they had. Some shared they were upset, scared, and felt unsafe because of the unrest. After we heard them out, we clarified misunderstandings, answered questions and reassured them that they were safe. Students also did some work around how to disagree and handle conflict appropriately. We asked, “What can we do when we disagree?” and “How can you encourage people to handle conflict appropriately?” Here are some responses:

- Try to calm down.- Explain to the other person what to do and what not to do.- Try to agree on something you both like.- Do Rock, Paper, Scissors.- Get a grown-up and ask for their help.- Make a deal- Take 5 deep breaths, talk it out and make a compromise.

I hate that we have to continue to have hard conversations with our students about the crazy world we currently live in. Yet, I am ALWAYS impressed with their perspectives, thoughts and ideas.

Esta semana unidad de co

Los Sunbeam han estado aprendiendo a escribir argumentos. Con cada nuevo género de escritura aprendemos sobre las etapas. La redacción de argumentos tiene cuatro etapas: una tesis, razones para respaldar la tesis, evidencia para respaldar las razones y un refuerzo de la tesis. Los estudiantes han estado practicando escribiendoles a los miembros de la familia y sus maestros. Vea si puede encontrar cada etapa del argumento escrito en su carta a continuación. A continuación, los estudiantes usarán lo que han aprendido para escribir cartas sobre la protección de los animales.

"¡Quiero ver al pulpo volver a pasar por el agujero!" Vimos desde el principio en nuestro tema de Animales que nuestros estudiantes son grandes fanáticos de los pulpos. ¿Quién podría culparlos? Los pulpos son geniales. Cuanto más aprendemos sobre ellos, más increíble nos parece que un animal así pueda existir. ¿Sabías que los pulpos tienen tres corazones? ¿Que pueden saborear con los brazos? ¿Que pueden cambiar de color? Esta semana leímos el libro Inky the Octopus, sobre un pulpo que escapó de un acuario en Nueva Zelanda arrastrándose por una tubería de drenaje. Las miradas de nuestros estudiantes cuando ven videos de pulpos lo dicen todo.Los Ninjas pasarán las últimas semanas de este tema creando proyectos relacionados con los pulpos y otros animales que les interesan. También escribirán argumentos para proteger a los pulpos reduciendo la contaminación plástica en el océano. ¡Manténganse al tanto!

Esta semana los Happy Hedgehogs tuvieron la oportunidad de compartir nuestro trabajo con la escuela durante Wednesday Share. Celebramos la escritura en la que hemos trabajado durante las últimas semanas. Grados 3&4 Salon 207 - Amanda & AminaDespués del disturbio en Washington DC la semana pasada, los estudiantes compartieron cosas que vieron en la televisión, hablaron con sus familias e hicieron preguntas que tenían. Algunos compartieron que estaban molestos, asustados y se sentían inseguros debido a los disturbios. Después de escucharlos, aclaramos malentendidos, respondimos preguntas y les aseguramos que estaban a salvo. Los estudiantes también trabajaron en cómo estar en desacuerdo y manejar los conflictos de manera apropiada. Preguntamos: "¿Qué podemos hacer cuando no estamos de acuerdo?" y "¿Cómo puede alentar a las personas a manejar los conflictos de manera adecuada?" Aquí hay algunas respuestas:

- Trate de calmarse.- Explique a la otra persona qué hacer y qué no hacer.- Intente ponerse de acuerdo en algo que les guste a ambos.- Haz piedra, papel, tijeras.- Busque un adulto y pida su ayuda.- Haga un trato- Respire profundamente 5 veces, háblelo y haga un compromiso.

Odio que tengamos que seguir teniendo conversaciones difíciles con nuestros estudiantes sobre el mundo loco en el que vivimos actualmente. Sin embargo, SIEMPRE estoy impresionada con sus perspectivas, pensamientos e ideas
