BABY MINE: Booking clerk Tanya and security guard Brian have worked in
health for a combined 45 years and are dedicated to their work at Mount
Druitt Hospital.
Tanya says it’s like a family.
“Everybody knows everybody. We’re all friendly,” Tanya said.
So when they stopped to have a look at
the new photo competition gallery on
the main entry level, it was no surprise
that Tanya nominated Hayden by Noel
Rowsell as her favourite.
“It reminds me of our grandson,” she
said.
You can see all the pictures for yourself
on level 2. Which one is your favourite?

MODELLING THE FUTURE ON TOUR
MANAGEMENT PLAN: Australasian College of Health
Service Management Congress attendees dropped in this
week for a tour.
Delegates enjoyed presentations by Peter Rophail about
‘Building our Future Together’ and Prof. Glen Maberly about
the Western Sydney Diabetes Initiative.
A highlights tour followed which included stops on the
wards, viewing carer zones, the cancer centre and the
B2Hub.
MAKING IT HAPPEN: The construction site is the most
visible sign of expansion and change at Blacktown, but
behind the scenes there’s another major transformation
taking place. Our teams are now starting to plan the
transition from being a local hospital to becoming a major
tertiary hospital for western Sydney, and that means
redesigning their models of care.
This week our women’s and children’s teams started their
model of care project. They will meet weekly for the rest of
the year to shape future health service delivery and map a
path to for the transition. Above, Emeil, Marisa,Harry
Melissa and Leanne at work.

PLANNING AHEAD
RAPID SET
HOW TO BUILD A HOSPITAL: The delivery of our new
hospital infrastructure follows a well-established pattern.
From first concepts, we move to schematic design (how the
hospital flows, and how rooms and services in each
department relate to each other), to detailed design and
then design finalisation.
At this point, users are getting down to the nitty gritty -
checking the furniture, fittings, equipment, powerpoints,
and even door handles to make sure every element fits their
specifications.
This week we’ve had more than 10 design finalisation
meetings with users, where teams including maternity and
women’s health (pictured above) put their plans under the
microscope. For more information about how we plan and
build your hospitals, check out How to Build a Hospital on
Health Infrastructure’s website.
READY, SET: We’ve been keeping a very close eye on
construction from our vantage point in the clinical
services building. Nirajan from our office took these
before and after shots of yesterday’s concrete pour
where our AW Edwards team is making very quick
progress on the new acute services building.

BOW-WOW-WOW
OPEN FOR INSPECTION
PUPPY LOVE: Oh how we love it when Nepean
Therapy Dogs visit our hospitals! They’re always
camera-ready!
OPEN DOOR: We
opened our new
Centre for Addiction
Medicine up to staff
last week for a
preview. Seija from
Pre-Admission Clinic
joined us for a photo.
Her verdict: “it’s very
well set-out and I love
the colours”.
So do we!
From left, Sheree,
Rancy, Catherine,
Grant, and Loriate

TIDY WORK: Karen from General Services was on hand
to do a quick spruce up before our drug health open day.
She’s pictured with Boat Sunset by Bernadette Khoury,
one of the beautiful images selected by staff to brighten
up the centre. And her trusty vacuum cleaner!

STAGE 1:
EMERGENCY
DEPARTMENT
ED SHORT STAY
ED STREAMING
PAEDIATRICS
PATIENT FLOW
For Luke Strachan, diagnosing, treating,
prescribing, discharging and referring
patients is all in a day’s work.
As a nurse practitioner in the new
ambulatory zone at Mount Druitt Hospital,
Luke’s skills are having an impact during the
unprecedented winter experienced by most
Sydney’ hospital emergency departments.
“The new ambulatory zone in Mount Druitt’s
emergency department is currently seeing
55% to 60% of ED presentations quickly and
comfortably,” Luke said.
“We have nursing, medical and allied health
staff as well as me, and this combination of
skills, with a well-designed space, provides
our patients with expedited, and improved,
access to care.”
Mount Druitt ED now streams non-urgent,
non-complex cases directly into the
ambulatory zone, so things like sprains and
broken bones can be managed quickly and
long wait times can be avoided.
The change frees up the main ED for the
higher urgency and complex cases, and
patients are more satisfied with the shorter
wait times.
Mount Druitt ED currently averages about
100 patients a day.
“It’s having the right staff in the right place
that makes a big different to the experience
people have in hospital emergency
departments,” Luke said.
Practice makes perfect
