    Principals message

Tēnā koutou ngā whānau o te kura o Whakamaru.

We would like to welcome back to school Phoenix Dwane and our new enrolments Kobi Long and Jahrel Reweti. It has been awesome seeing you all settle in to Whakamaru School so easily.

Gypsy day (June 1st) has been, so please if you are changing ad-dresses or you will be moving please let us know so we can update your contact details.

School photos - final photo slips to be returned by this Friday (5 June). Once these have been returned we will be able to confirm when the photos will be returned to school.

We have Student Council meeting weekly and our students have been very open about their wellbeing and how they have settled back into school after the lockdown—during which they have thought about a number of topics and steps they would like to put in place. These topics range from creating a bullying intervention plan, wheels day, Maunga Winter Sports challenge (due to Pine-lands Winter Sports being cancelled) and a future Market Day. So watch this space, our students have a number of ideas they would like to put in place.

The last couple of weeks the Taupo Road Safety co-ordinaters Su-san and Kath have been in teaching our students how to ride bikes safely and giving our students an opportunity to gain Grade 1 & 2 certificates for cycling. Next Wednesday some Year 8 students who passed Grade 1 will journey to Taupo to try to gain their Grade 2 certificate.

Since the return to school we have worked with Jessica Parker (Piano) & Matua Grant (guitar) to confirm some days for their music lessons—see page 6 for more information.

We have continued to run our KiwiCan programme here at school. This is an amazing programme that reinforces our school values through a number of fun sessions. We have however had to fare-well Koni Tuau one of the driving forces behind this programme at our school for the past 3 years, she has decided to reduce her workload with KiwiCan and focus more time with her whanau. The pre-ride safety check Here is a simple, checklist to help you. You should get into the habit of checking these things every time you ride. If anything is wrong after having done the check you will need to get it fixed.

Nuts, bolts and levers Are there any loose parts or accessories? Lift the front wheel off the ground, then let it drop. Does anything sound, feel or look loose? Do a quick inspection of the whole cycle. Are the front wheel, rear wheel and seat post quick release levers firmly done up?

Tyres and wheels Are the tyres firm? Check by putting your weight on the cycle while looking at the tyres. Compare the amount they bulge out to how you know they look when they are correctly inflated.

Are your tyres in good shape? Spin each wheel slowly and look for cuts in the tread and side wall. Are your wheels straight? Spin each wheel and check that the tyre doesn't touch the brakes or wobble from side to side. Take your cycle to a bike shop for wheel straightening.

Brakes Do the wheels turn when you are holding the brakes? Test each brake by holding each on in turn and make sure you can't roll the cycle forward.

Are the wheel rims and brake pads/discs clean?

Are the brake pads contacting with the wheel rims or disc? Can the brake levers be pulled enough to stop the cycle, without them touching the handlebars?

Handlebars Are the handlebar grips secure and in good condition?

Are the ends of the handlebars covered?

Is the seat firmly fixed so you can't twist it?

Is the seat positioned at the correct height so that your toes touch the ground when seated? Are the handlebars firmly fixed in the frame? Stand at the front of the cycle with the front wheel held between your legs and check to make sure you can't twist the bars.

Reflectors and lights If you are riding at night, are the lights working?

Are the reflectors visible, secure and clean?

Are your batteries fresh or fully charged?
