What a great time to be in the Herefordbusiness! Sales are up, interest is high, andthose new babies with white faces look sogood. Plus we have a LOT COMING UP foryou.The WHA Sale WAS A RESOUNDING

SUCCESS. The sale average was up by $350over last year to $2,213. Buyer interest was strong with many new buyers and strongbidding even to the end of the sale. The last bull sold was tied as highest selling bull!"The last shall be first" to quote an eternal source. Thank you Michael Boettcher andKermit Rhiner and the sale comittee for their hard work. We will be seeking furtherconsignor input at an open meeting August 14 at the State Fair.The MIDWEST REGIONAL HEREFORD SHOW is coming to Monroe June 24-

26. This is a "mini" Jr National with speech, quiz bowls, showmanship and fittingcontests, in addition to the the shows. If you have never shown at a Jr National, Iencourage you to go to Monroe. These are memorable family experiences. Also theJr. National is relatively close this year in Kansas City July 9-16. Contact BJ Jonesfor possible rides for your cattle. These were some of the best times for our youngfamily growing up. Get involved!Don't forget the Ultimate Steer Show June 4-5 in Jefferson. At least $50 and as

much as $500 is available for all that come!!The WHA TOUR will be in the southesst district this year. The details are in this

The Wisconsin Hereford Association conducted their 2011Annual Meeting in conjunction with the Wisconsin Cattlemen’sWinter Conference at the Wintergreen Conference Center inWisconsin Dells in mid-February.Steve Merry, Hartford, was elected the new president of the

WHA. Elected to the vice-presidency was Amy Espenscheid,Argyle. Melissa Dahnert, Juneau, is the association treasurerand Ruth Espenscheid, Argyle, serves at the group’s secretary.Other returning WHA board members include Sondra

Brancel, Endeavor; Mark Friedrich, Roberts; and DaveSteinhoff, New Lisbon of the Northwest District; Jean Potter,Coloma; and Scott Klemme, Plymouth of the Northeast District;Eric Katzenberger, Monroe of the Southwest District, and GrantWiswell of the Southeast District. breed in 2011. Elizabeth Bowen, New Lisbon, was crowned the2011 State Hereford Queen. State princesses include NickyFolkman, Ixonia; Briana Katzenberger, Monroe; and ArielPhillips, Cambria. The group also has two junior ambassadors –Bailey Jones of Darlington and Karen Eby of Shell Lake.Upcoming events for the WHA include their state sale March

5th in Lancaster and the AHA Regional Junior Hereford Showin Monroe, which will be held the last week-end in June.

2011 Hall of Fame HonoreesJim and Mary Ann MillerJim and Mary Ann Miller of Mari-mill Farm Herefords, Rio, had

no idea of what they had in store in 1974 when they purchased sevenregistered Polled Hereford cows with calves at side. Jim was a paintspecialist for Cenex and on the road during the week. Mary Ann wasresponsible for the kids and the cows. They lived near Johnson Creekso when Gary Reinke found out they had Herefords, he put them intouch with Darrell Shultis and the Wisconsin Polled HerefordAssociation. They were exposed to all of the activities of the WPHAwhich continued after their move to their present farm near Rio.Both Jim and Mary Ann grew up with registered Holsteins, so they

had to learn a few different techniques when it came to raising beef.Jim had shown some steers at the Northeast Junior Livestock Show,and Mary Ann’s family had a couple of crossbred black baldy cows.The WPHA provided them with experiences in sales, shows, fairs,and junior activities. If someone had told Mary Ann that she wouldbe loading cattle, feed, and tack into a trailer as well as luggage andkids into a Suburban and driving to a Junior National Show, shewould have been skeptical. But, what an adventure to see fine cattle,fine youth, as well as cattle breeder families from across the nation!Josephine, Katherine, Sam, Maureen, and Mike all showed cattle.

Jo, Maureen, and granddaughter, Vicky, all worked as princesses andqueens for the WPHA. Jo, Maureen, and Mike all participated in theWJPHA in various capacities.Mary Ann served as president and secretary of the Pollettes, as

well as the chairman of the food stand and a member on the JuniorNational Committee at Milwaukee.

Jim hascontributed timeand effort forevents andprovided scalesand chutes forfair ID. He is atalented salesperson. He likesto help peopleimprove theirlivestock handlingsystems. With theirherd, he helps with the sales of animals. They have a competitivemarket for their feeder calves. Producers have commented on howwell the Miller Herefords perform in the feedlot.Jim and Mary Ann have had to slow down recently and reduce the

size of their herd. This fall they will be celebrating their 55thwedding anniversary. One thing the Millers have learned over theyears is there are a couple of things that bring tension to a marriage –one is hanging wallpaper and the other is herding cattle. Before theymove cattle, they have learned to be clear that they all understandwhat they are doing and who is doing what!Jim and Mary Ann appreciate the friendship that the Wisconsin

Hereford Association has given to them and they appreciate all theyhave learned from the Hereford industry.

WHA News & NotesMeet the WHA Royalty Ambassadors…The WHA is proud to be represented by Elizabeth Bowen as

the 2011 Wisconsin Hereford Queen. Elizabeth is the daughter ofDave and Laurie Steinhoff, New Lisbon. She is currently astudent at UW – River Falls. Elizabeth has been an activemember of the state junior association and has shown Herefordcattle at the county, district, state, and national levels. Elizabeth’sgoal is to continue to promote the Hereford industry throughoutthe state and nationally.Nicky Folkman is representing the Southeast District as a

Wisconsin Hereford Princess. Her parents are Steve and JillFolkman of Ixonia. Nicky has been an active member of theWJHA, has attended many Junior Nationals and has representedWisconsin on the team marketing team, the junior quiz bowl, andplaced third in Hereford Idol competition. She has alsorepresented our state at Pride conferences. She is excited to havethe opportunity to meet more Hereford Breeders and to serve asan ambassador of Hereford cattle.Hailing from the Southwest District is Briana Katzenberger.

Briana’s parents are Eric and Rosie Katzenberger from PlumRiver Ranch in Monroe. Briana is also a very active young lady,serving as the Green County Beef Queen this past year. She hasattended numerous junior nationals, and participated in severalnational contests. She is excited to be representing the Herefordbreed and is looking forward to the opportunity to meet newbreeders and promote Hereford cattle.Ariel Phillips is the Central Wisconsin Hereford Princess for

2011. She is a high school student from Cambria. She works withher aunt, Rebecca Sauer, with her junior Hereford activities. Sheactively shows cattle at the county and state levels, and wants tohelp promote the Hereford breed and meet new people in thecattle industry.Representing the Northwest District is Karen Ebby, Shell Lake.

Karen is very active in 4-H and FFA and shows cattle in theIndianhead area and at Wisconsin State Fair. Karen is a “go-getter” who is always willing to lend a hand and promote thecattle industry at local and state events.Our junior Hereford ambassador for 2011 is Bailey Jones.

Bailey is the daughter of BJ and Kim Jones, Wildcat CattleCompany, Darlington. Bailey brings a wealth of Herefordbackground and experiences to the royalty team and is a welcomeaddition to our group.If you would like any or all of these young ladies to be present

Highlights from the Spring Board MeetingThe WHA board of directors convened on May 1, 2011 to

discuss upcoming events this year, rule changes, andsponsorships. High lights of the meeting are as follows:• The 2011 State Sale was discussed. The board is in theprocess of reviewing how the sale is paid out, possible rulechanges for 2012, the number of bulls in the sale, a pre-saleparade, and the screening process. An open forum meeting willbe held Sunday, August 14th, at Wisconsin State Fair Park toget members’ input on how to improve and enhance the sale.

• Appointed to represent the WHA on the WisconsinCattlemen’s board were Sondra Brancel and Kermit Rhiner.

• Plans for the 2011 Ultimate Calf Sale were laid out. The salewas moved to Sunday, October 23rd, to avoid a conflict withthe AHA Annual Meeting and the American Royal in KansasCity the last weekend in October. Entry fees for steer calveswas raised from $25 to $50. There was one rule change. Forthe 2011 sale and 2012 show, only calves that are sold throughthe sale ring that day will be eligible for the Ultimate SteerClass at Jefferson.

• Entry forms for the 2011 Ultimate Steer Class, which will beheld June 11 at the WLBA Spring Preview Show in Jefferson,will be mailed out in mid-May. If you do not receive an entry,contact Holly Paulson at (608) 873-9590 or Kermit Rhiner(608) 445-1279.

• Any junior needing an entry form for the Hereford JackpotSteer Class at the Wisconsin State Fair junior show needs tocontact Kermit at (608) 445-1279.

• Mark down Saturday, February 11, 2012 as the date for the2012 annual meeting, which will be held in conjunction withthe WCA Winter Conference.

• The WHA board designated a $1,000 donation to theWisconsin Juniors for their Regional Show, which will be heldthe last weekend in June. The juniors are to use the donation asbest fits their needs for the event.

• The WHA board also held a discussion on the $1,000donation to the World Beef Expo, as voted on by themembership at the annual meeting. The board has designatedthat the donation be used to sponsor junior premiums at the2011 WBE. The board also discussed at length premiums forthe open show. Letters will be sent to neighboring statesasking for co-sponsorship of these premiums, as well asencouraging participation in WBE shows and sales.The board will convene again at the Wisconsin State Fair on

August 14th.

WHA Member NewsRobert "Bobby" Weston Passes AwayRobert “Bobby” Weston, 75, of The Famous Westcrest Farms

of Watertown, passed away Friday, April 22, 2011,unexpectedly.Bob was born Feb. 23, 1936, and grew up in the Pewaukee

area. Bob’s passion as a Holstein and Hereford breeder waslocally and nationally known. As a young man, Bob was a well-known star athlete in the

Pewaukee area. He played in the Land O’ Lakes BaseballLeague for over a decade.The Westcrest Farm’s prefix has won many Holstein All-

American Nominations and All- Wisconsin awards and localand national Hereford awards.Bob and his brother, Jim, started Westcrest Farm in the

chicken house at Grandpa Cull’s in 1956, moving from farm tofarm as the herd grew until finally buying the farm inWatertown in 1969, later joined by Bob’s son, Jerry.Survived by daughters, Cathy Meyer of Washington, Mary

and “Charlie” Ganley of Michigan, Susan and “Jack” Castellionof Colorado; a son, Jerry Weston of Watertown; his mother,Juanita Weston of Pewaukee; brothers, Jim Weston ofWatertown and Gene and “Rose” Weston of Pewaukee; and sixgrandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father, Gilbert Weston, and a

Hereford LeadershipWhat an exciting time to be in the

cattle business! Producers arewitnessing record breaking prices. Itseems that all aspects of the cattleindustry are showing profitability, andthat is very unusual. Normally, if thecow/calf producers are making money,the feedlot operators are not, or viceversa. What does it mean to have $1.20fat cattle, $1.50 to $1.70 feeders, and$7.00 plus corn?Well, I do not know the answer to my

own question. It is all new territory orprice structure for all of us. Myconservative nature tells me that it will not last. Thus, make haywhile the sun is shining by selling. However, on the other hand,cow numbers in the United States are at a 53 year low. Foreigndemand for our great United States product of beef proteincontinues to climb steadily. Low supply and high demand equalshigher prices.Remember, that as our income rises so does our cost of

production. Fuel, feed, and land prices seem to rise faster thanbeef prices. Thus, it is still important to maximize efficiency inall aspects of production. That is why Hereford genetics are soimportant. No other breed of cattle can increase your efficienciesas well as Herefords. Hereford Association Outstanding Junior Member for 2010. Shewon a silver belt buckle which is given to the most dedicatedjunior member each year. Tayton is a lifelong member of theWisconsin Junior Hereford Association and has been Director,Secretary, Treasurer, and President of the association. In additionshe is a past Wisconsin Polled Hereford Queen and Scholarshiprecipient from the WJHA. She is currently studying at theUniversity of Wisconsin-Platteville.

Wiechert and Bowen named 2010 ScholarshipRecipientsJulie Wiechert, Cedarburg, Wis., was named the Wisconsin

Junior Hereford Associations Scholarship Winner for 2010.Elizabeth Bowen, New Lisbon, Wis., was the second placewinner.Wiechert was awarded the $780 first place award. Wiechert is

the current Vice-President for the Wisconsin Junior HerefordAssociation and has been a past Outstanding Junior Member andWisconsin State Queen. Nationally, she has won the Poll-etteFounders Scholarship and an Ed Bible Memorial Scholarship.She is currently studying Pharmacy at Drake University.As second place winner, Bowen was awarded $520 towards

her studies. Bowen is the 2011 Wisconsin State Hereford Queenand is currently the Membership Secretary for the WJHA. She isstudying at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls.The scholarship program is administered through the

Wisconsin Junior Hereford Association and is supportedfinancially with an $800 donation from the Wisconsin HerefordAssociation. Junior Members interested in applying for 2011 areencouraged to apply by July 1. Applications are available atwww.wisconsinherefords.org .
