Opportunity for Parents to see a counsellor

• Parent and student questions are often answered when they attend the presentations done by our Counselling Team or the Course Fair

• Once students have entered their courses into MyEdBC, there is the opportunity to change those courses up until late May. Therefore, please do not worry that everything has to be finalized before the Feb. 16 deadline.

• During Parent-Teacher Conferences (on Thursday, March 15) parents will be able to see a counsellor for a 10 minute session

• Alternatively, there will be the opportunity for parents to book time to see their son/daughter’s counsellor for an office appointment once we have completed the course planning process

Approved Courses• Every institution has their own list

Changes to UBC Admissions

• Entrance Requirements for 2019-2020• More information will be available in Spring

• UBC has historically set the admission standard for our province

• UBC is moving away from an approved list so within the next few years it is going to be important to carefully check each institution’s website to see if there have been changes

• We will continue to provide up-dates to parents and students as that information becomes available

• UBC will come in the fall of 2018 and they will explain their admission requirements to WGSS students and parents

What’s changing?

What’s NOT changing

• Pre-requisite course for degree specific requirements

• English language requirements

• Personal Profile and other supplemental information

What IS changing

• How UBC makes competitive academic assessments for each applicant

• How UBC looks at grades in all Grade 11 and 12 courses (not just four Grade 12s)

• The impact each Grade 11 and 12 course has depends on how relevant it is to your program of study

Broad-Based Admissions

• What’s important to you?• What are your significant achievements?• What have you learned from these experiences?• What challenges have you overcome?

UBC’s Academic Assessment

Breadth of coursework • Students are recommended to take at least six Grade 12 level courses• Applicants presenting a heavier course load (in Grade 11 and 12) may be advantaged

Rigour of coursework • Students are encouraged to challenge themselves in school• Applicants presenting courses that contain rigorous/first-year university content may be advantaged

Relevancy of coursework • Students are encourage to pursue courses that are relevant to their intended are of study at UBC (even if the course marks are not used); those who do so may be advantaged

Personal circumstances • In some cases, it may not be possible to demonstrate breadth, rigour, and/or additional relevant courses.• Applicants can provide information about this and will be considered on a case-by-case basis

Page 25: WGSS Course Planning - WGSS Counselling & Careerswgsscounselling.weebly.com/.../2018_grade_12_course_planningjan1… · the course at the Grade 12 level; UBC will only look at the

How can I increase my chances for admission to UBC?• Get good grades in all your classes, particularly those related to what you want to study at UBC. All

learning in secondary school is important and can help you gain admission.

• Pursue your academic interests. Take a breadth of coursework. And don’t worry about experimenting with a new subject; UBC will not look at your lowest grade so long as it is not related to what you want to study at UBC.

• If you do poorly in an important subject at the Grade 11 level and don’t want UBC to use the grade, take the course at the Grade 12 level; UBC will only look at the senior grade.

• Having the highest grades is not the only way to get in – challenging yourself by taking more courses, courses that are related to what you want to study at UBC, and courses that are academically rigorous can also be beneficial.

Repeating Courses…a few examples

• UBC, SFU, UVIC will take the highest course mark for any approved grade 11 or 12 course – no penalty is applied.

• Waterloo – Engineering students are penalized for doing a course a second time to get a higher mark.

• U of Toronto - The Faculty of Arts & Science does not recommend students repeat courses and reserves the right to give preference for admission and scholarship consideration to students whose marks are the result of a single attempt at each course.

• U of T - Rotman Commerce program considers only the first attempt mark.
