ENVIRONMENTALBUSINESS SERVICES

WFEL are currently working towards the Gold award for the Stockport Environmental Business Pledge (EBP) and are also considering implementing energy and water savings identified from a Groundwork Resource Efficiency Review.

THE PROCESS

WFEL, which employs approximately 220 people at its site in Heaton Chapel, is a world leader in the manufacture, repair and distribution of tactical military and disaster relief bridges for over 39 countries including the UK’s Ministry of Defence.

Despite already being accredited with the internationally recognised IS0 14001 Environmental Management System (EMS), WFEL recognised the EBP as a useful scheme to aid their continual improvement as part of their EMS. They also believe the pledge and the support on offer from the delivery partners; Groundwork MSSTT, as a useful way to reduce their energy, water and material usage and the associated cost.

“The EBP has given us at WFEL the opportunity to identify areas of environmental aspects for further improvement as well as helping us to fine tune those already working well to a high standard we strive to attain. Without the help, advice and drive to achieve the awards of the EBP, WFEL wouldn’t have made the progress it has in such a short period of time.”

THE RESULTS

£60,000 worth of cost savings identified Following a review by a Groundwork MSSTT advisor, amounting to 316 Tonnes of CO2 savings

Significant savings identified per annum on lighting costs This cost saving would be a result of WFEL changing the current lighting stock and replacing them with low energy LED’s

Approximately 5,000m3 of water savings a year identified By utilizing the large roof space through harvesting rainwater. They also received saving calculations based on installing tap aerators and cistern damns.

After working through the Bronze and Silver requirements, WFEL have identified that they are now better equipped to manage their waste more efficiently. They have also installed energy and water efficient technologies, such as low wattage fluorescent lighting, high speed roller doors and water saving push taps. This shows that even for a large company such as WFEL, who already have an international recognised EMS in place, the EBP scheme helps to further improve efficiencies.

Groundwork MSSTT are continuing to work with WFEL to achieve the identified savings and to complete the final EBP stage.
