52 INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY OI focus. When making software choices today, executives are looking past bells and whistles to focus on the bottom line, or return on investment (ROI). CEOs who were burnt in the past on empty promises of tech- nology investments are now demanding a demonstrated ROI within set time- frames. To meet this growing customer focus on ROI, software vendors are wisely placing their consulting abilities front and centre with a focus on helping their clients design business-responsive archi- tectures. While an end-to-end lease manage- ment solution is desirable, most lessors do not feel such a leasing solution needs to come from one vendor or be limited to one type of technology. Industry observers also point out that the risk and costs of developing a single system to embrace all business processes are beyond the budgets of many lessors. However, the technology is there to do it. Redefining end-to-end. The notion of an end-to-end system for a leasing company was actually redefined when Oracle and SAP entered this market in 2002. From their perspective, “end-to-end” covers enterprise-wide software that includes the leasing lifecycle as well as all other business processes, such as corpo- rate accounts payable, fixed assets, pur- chasing, HR and even parent company operations, according to Denis Stypulkoski, an associate with The Alta Group, international consultants special- ising in the global equipment leasing and finance industry. Cameron Krueger, Managing Director of Northern Consulting, in Chicago, Illinois, and a respected consultant in the equipment leasing and finance market worldwide, says lessors would ideally like to automate everything from cus- tomer relationship management (CRM) applications through accounting and asset management tools. However, he notes, “not all lessors are wedded to the idea of getting a total solution from one provider”. More often, lessors want to obtain “best-of-breed” applications in each function, and this can necessitate an inte- gration of systems from multiple ven- dors, he adds. Therefore, companies like Cyence International and CapitalStream need to ensure their front-end origina- tion solutions align with other compa- nies’ software at all points in the leasing cycle. Many application providers also aim to ensure their customers can easily cap- ture intelligent data throughout the leas- ing lifecycle, speed operations and improve customer relations through strategic systems integration. But understanding precisely the stage of development of each software provider requires a knowledgeable guide because the application market is dynamic, with new companies forming, new offerings being rolled out, and established players either pairing or exit- ing the market. It helps to have profes- sional guidance in sorting it all out. The effects of consolidation and alliances. Looking at the leasing market today is like peering into a kaleidoscope where the changing scenery’s bright lights twin- kle or dim with each turn. Many feel that consolidation of leasing companies has reduced the breadth of the market so much that consolidation of providers is inevitable. John McCue, President, CEO and founder of McCue Systems, in Burlingame, California, has been active in the leasing industry since the 1970s and a vocal spokesman at industry meet- ings on this subject. He stresses the importance of staying with industry providers who are committed to equip- ment leasing – suggesting that some of the newer entrants may not remain if their appetite for business is not satisfied. Stypulkoski says he would agree that his clients should ensure their providers are committed to the leasing industry for the long term and keep their focus on interoperability. “The market is smaller than some of these providers may have thought”, he said. One reason consultants like Stypulkoski and Krueger are busy today is that they are experts at separating hype from reality in a field of varying and changing technology solutions. They can also help develop the foundation for a successful implementation of an end- to-end technology solution for their clients. Stypulkoski says the technology solu- tion selected by his clients, whether it be based in Java, Microsoft.Net or another platform, is not as important as how the technologies are combined. “You need an interface architecture that allows you to move in and out of technologies with as little pain as possible”, Stypulkoski explains. The next step is determining where in the leasing cycle automation is most needed. Since it is easier to automate the front end, many of the newest software entrants are focused there, on lease orig- ination, primarily (i.e. marketing, sales, credit processing and documentation). Front-office automation. Among the providers of front-office automation is CapitalStream, based in Seattle, Washington, with its FinanceCenter TM , a technology platform available as a host- ed solution or a behind-the-firewall solution. FinanceCenter’s architecture is Java developed for Oracle databases. CapitalStream solutions are intended By Susan Carol, Susan Carol Associates Where is the ROI?
