the Austin Book
Fair (Oct 24-26.)
Our show at the OBE, “For the
Love of Books,” is perfect for
the book fair. Congratulations
to members who have sold
paintings and I would also like
to mention that Janice
Shefleman (wife of member,
Tom shefleman) is also doing
a book signing at the OBE
during the book fair. Thank
you to Shirley Slaughter and
Donna Annacone for chairing
this show. Please check the
calendar of events for dates of
future activities.
Happy Painting!—Donna O
Hello Members,
IT HAS BEEN A PRO-
DUCTIVE FALL. The
month started with visiting
artist, Gerald Brommer, im-
pressing us with his credit
card scraping technique,
creating beautiful plant im-
ages at the Sunday demo.
This was followed by a 4
day workshop where his
focus was not only on collage
but also the element of de-
sign. Participants came away
with so many successful piec-
es that we added a collage
show, August 2015 at the
North Hills Gallery that will
be chaired by Betty Jameson.
Thank you to our workshop
chairs (Michele, Chuck, and
Tina) for their hard work in
making this workshop so suc-
cessful.

Gerald Brommer Workshop by Michele Missner
The Brommer workshop was a great suc-
cess. First of all, about 70 of you attend-
ed his demo where scratched away at a
lovely beach composition with palm trees.
I had long heard what a wonderful teacher
Jerry is. And at 87 years old, he has a lot
of energy which he imparted to his stu-
dents. Several people had already taken
workshops from him, but there is always
something new to teach and learn.
What we did in the workshop was very
different from the demo. (He knew that
collage would take more time than he had
to dry.). For the workshop, we used mostly
rice paper collage papers (Washi) that we
colored ourselves. The workshop was ba-
sically about design and different design
forms that help with composition. He
showed examples, both realistic and ab-
stract of each of these designs, such as the
T, cruciform, etc. The work produced is
amazing, and with Betty Jameson’s help
we will have an exhibit of this abstract col-
lage work in August, 2015 at the North
Hills Gallery.
“The work produced is amazing
and with Betty Jameson’s help

abstract collage work in August,
2015 at the North Hills Gallery.”
Busy teacher, busy students at the Gerald Brommer workshop.
Sue Stevens: It was a wonderful workshop and I thank you
for all your work. I think he is one of the best who I’ve seen
here. We got a lot of individual help which is nice and he al-
ways offered positive comments and ways to improve, instead
of remarks that can devastate a beginner.
Beth Fox: As someone who never took an art class or held a
brush in my hand until 2 years ago, there are clearly gigantic
craters in my artistic knowledge. I personally learned a great
deal from the workshop and appreciated the time that jerry
spent with each of us as he walked about the room, his clarity
in explaining the key elements of design, and his ability to
find positive and constructive things to say about each paint-
ing.
Judy Copeland: Enjoyed workshop very much. Put together
fourteen total, now to tweak, mat, frame, and show.
Sue Gilliam: Hid design instruction and exercises are tops.
He sure inspired me again and set the creative juices going
even though I was only there part time.
Tanya Christie: (a new member who is new to Austin): In a
moment of frustration with my busy life & hectic family, I
“selfishly” signed up for the 4 day Brommer Workshop when
a space opened up at the last minute. My painting style is typ-
ically very controlled and my subject recognizable. I’d never
even given much thought to collage and even less to more
abstract subject forms. By the end of the 2nd day of Mr.
Brommers class, I’d begun to see the beauty. . . By the end of
the 3rd day, I was hooked & hated to see the class coming to a
close. I was having that addictive “painting feeling” as I
ripped fragile and thicker papers into bits & pieced them back
together.. .

A Tiny Taste of Student Work From the Brommer Workshop:
Top row, below: From Left to right, collages by Michele Missner, Vicki Brevell, and Betty Jameson
It was a pleasure to jury this show-- first in my studio-and then with
the actual paintings. There is a nice variety in subject and tech-
nique, but I craved to see a few more abstractions. Awareness of
design is good in most paintings and the variety of personal interpre-
tation was pleasant for me as a juror.
I enjoyed working with the variety of personal feelings, techniques,
and subject matter. The group is not slanted in one direction, but
lots of individual interpretation is evident! Good!
It was a pleasure to work with the images that were presented and I
especially appreciated the individualistic approaches and techniques.
It appears that watercolor is alive and well in Austin. Congratula-
tions to all who produced a show that I enjoyed working with.

FOR THE LOVE OF BOOKS started out as a literature inspired exhibit at the Georgetown Li-
brary in 2013. The brainstorm of VP of Shows Helen Green, the exhibit got a second showing this October at the Old Bak-
ery and Emporium in downtown Austin. The timing couldn’t have been better for a literature themed art show, since the
Texas Book Festival was also scheduled to happen at the State Capitol and Congress Avenue October 25-26. Volunteers
from WWG, including Helen Green, Tom Shefelman, Marsha Reeves, Donna Overly, Donna Annacone, Shirley Slaughter,
and Betty Jameson showed up on the busy weekend to promote our show, demonstrate their talents, and advertise our group.
Everyone who came agreed that they had a wonderful time meeting the public and attending the book festival. The crowds
were large and friendly, and WWG member Michelle Missner sold a painting during the festival weekend.
We are trying to bring you the best
artist/teachers at the most reasonable
fees. Our website and the artists’ web-
sites attract a lot of people. We would
prefer to have WWG members take
advantage of these art learning experi-
ences, but it is first come, first served.
We have a wait list for Nich-
olas Simmons, but if experi-
ence is any indicator, if you
would like to take this work-
shop, please sign up. The
odds are pretty good that
you will bet in!
Your input, please:
The Brommer workshop was difficult to
fill. We had enough on the wait list, but in
the end, after many drops and adds, we
were one person short of our quota. We
would like to hear from you what we can
do for our members to make you want to
attend workshops that we plan for you. We
have had wonderful artists that everyone in
the workshops had enjoyed working with.
Is it the time of year? Would Jan/Feb, and
later in the fall be better? Do we start reg-
istration too early?

About Waiting Lists, by Chuck Wallace
Someone asked yesterday about
how we handle the wait list for a
workshop. I checked with Tina and
Michele just to be sure I was accu-
rate in what I stated. We take
names on the wait list in the order
they sign up (based on the date they
sign up). When a spot opens up, we
start with the first name on the wait
list and work down.
We’ve held to this system even
when we had someone who was a
close friend of a visiting artist, had
forgotten to sign up, and was pres-
suring us to move them up on the
list ahead of those who had signed
up before her. We did this because
it was not fair to those who had
signed up earlier. This person did
not get to attend the workshop as a
participant.

(please view her website at Jenn-ArtStudio.com), Marie Ting, Katherine Snyder, Vivien
Burns
For those of you who will be buying or renewing gallery representation on our webpage for
next year, we are reducing the fee to $15 and increasing the number of images to eight.
Plus, it’s easier to send images because you only have to crop the edges, not format them.
You may sign up now for the gallery or after January when the images will be collected and
placed on our website. Early bird renewal for membership is $30.
Challenge of the Month: Paint or draw every day, even if for 15 minutes.

[email protected] Normally Bookworms meet quarterly, but for
the first time we’re combining meetings be-
cause of the heft of our latest read, Titian, by
Shiela Hale. It’s not a fast read, but offers a
fascinating glimpse of Venice in the 1500’s
when doges, popes, and the Holy Roman
Emperor were fighting, the French signed a
treaty with Suleiman the Great, a Muslim,
young Martin Luther was reacting against the
sale of indulgences, and the Catholic Refor-
mation was getting underway. Celibacy and
modest living amongst many of the clergy
were more wishful than factual.
Only about half of Titian’s 500-600 paintings
still survive, and recently I saw many of them
in London’s National Gallery of Art. Titian
painted the dukes, popes, and emperors and
their children, pets, and women. He was
among the most famous painters of the
world, a contemporary of Michelangelo and
Da Vinci. We will meet again in the new
year and welcome all members to join us.
The book is available for about 10 dollars in
paperback from Amazon suppliers. Buy it
for yourself or put it on your Christmas list!

Georgetown Library Show by Eddie Sutherland This is to announce the 2014 Georgetown
Library show is coming up in January
2015. The prospectus is attached to this
newsletter, but a few key dates are listed
below and some important information.
November 30, 2014: Send in list and la-
bels for up to three paintings.
January 2, 2015: Hang the show
January 4, 2015, Opening and Reception
The theme this year is Scenes of Winter.
Another thing that is important is that we
are restricting the size for all the paintings
to a half sheet of watercolor paper or
smaller since the library has restricted
hanging space. Generally that means
nothing that requires a frame that is larger
than 30 inches in any dimension.
Last but not least, please let me know if
you would be willing to help with hang-
ing or striking the show or helping with
the reception by bringing something to
eat, drink, or paper/plastic products.
More details on that later. If you have
questions please contact me or Lonnie
Shan at the email addresses below.

Beryl Kerwick’s Latest Art Adventure: Beryl says: "I was
asked to do illustrations for an eBook that incorporates color-
ful illustrations, a great story and classical music! It will be
available as a downloadable App. A new field for me. While
I have done book illustration artwork before this is the first
time I have worked on interactive designs. Quite a bit differ-
ent as I discovered and requiring a lot more precision than my
usual loose, free style of watercolor. The book, designed for
pre-school children has colorful pictures, the adventures of
two little bear cubs and perhaps most importantly, an introduc-
tion to classical music which is designed to enhance the story.
The work is done and the results were presented to the world
at the Texas Book Festival the weekend of October 25-26.
The company name is TAP-A-FLAP.com .The App is de-
signed as a read-to book(not a talking book) for young chil-
dren and has interactive tabs that reveal more illustrations. It
can be viewed on iPad and iPhone and will soon be available
on other tablets and phones.” You can also call Beryl at 512-

Artist Opportunities—Workshops and Classes
From Eileen Pestorius:
LIFE DRAWING CLASS NOW ON Jan. 22
Due to slow registration and a conflict with another
WWG activity, we postponed the Life Drawing Workshop at
Apache Shores until after the holidays. We will meet on Jan.
22, Thursday, 9-4 at Apache shores. We have the day re-
served. Bring a large sketch pad, charcoal, easels, paint, pen-
cil, and paper. Plan to work large at the start. We’ll do the full
figure at the start, with rapid drawings, and work towards por-
traits at the end of the day. We have a few extra easels, so tell
Eileen if you need one.
To take the class, send in a check for $25 made out to Eileen
Pestorius, mailed to 512 Kinstanty Cir., Austin 78746. Many
of you signed up at the General Meeting but sent no checks.
Please send them now: the last date to register is Jan. 15, a
week prior, so that Katherine, our experienced model, and Ei-
leen can make plans. Bring a sandwich or salad for lunch and
we’ll provide tea , coffee, and some goodies. We’ll pass the
hat for our model. As usual, we’ll tidy up at the end of the
day.
Opportunity for YOU
Want to learn the ins and outs of exhibiting art at
local venues? Want to meet the directors of local
art galleries, and explore exhibition possibilities?
Then the VP of Shows job is for YOU.
Helen Green, our current VP of shows, is moving
on to the job of Activities Director in 2015. She
has already done most of the work for the 2015
season—the venues are set, and many show co-
chairs are in place. You will be able to ease into
the job for almost a year before having all the
responsibility yourself, and other members who
have held this job will be available to advise you.
If more than one person is interested in the job,
the duties of VP of shows could be split between
different members, just as the VP of Workshops
job is. If interested, please contact Helen Green
or Donna Overly.
ARTIST OPPORTUNITIES:
New Gallery in Dripping Springs—opening Nov. 18, “Butterfly Gallery” will be a fine art gallery and studio located at 33
Mercer Street, Suite 2. There are spaces for 10 artists plus a 20’x16” studio which can be leased for classes, workshops and
meetings. Each artist space will be approximately 4’x8’ with 4x6 panels separating the spaces.– and will be leased on a fee ba-
sis.
To promote the artists in our gallery, we will have an “Art Night” once a month inviting the public. There will be a budget for
extensive advertising and signage, fliers, etc. We are a member of the Chamber of Commerce which will be a benefit to the
gallery. The revitalizing of Mercer Street is an ongoing project and soon Mercer Street will definitely be one of the main attrac-
tions for our community and visitors.
On November 29th, there will be the Hill country Tour of Gifts, which is a tour of shops in Dripping springs and the gallery will
be a part of that, so there will be at least 100 ticketed people coming through the doors that day! Plus coming up at the end of
the year will be Christmas on Mercer Street, and then there is always Founders Day in the spring, as well as other shops that
will bring the community and visitors to Mercer Street. For more information please contact Marsha Young at 512-738-5109 or
