Why should I use this plannerThe career program of study aligns graduation requirements to specific interests and career goals to students. All programs of study include graduation requirements as well as courses to help students follow their career passions.

How should I use this plannerAfter you complete the Career Bridge career interest survey in RAM Prep, build a course schedule that will help you meet your career goals. There are five broad areas for students to focus on; STEM Education, Business and Marketing, Health Sciences, Agriculture and Family and Consumer Sciences. Within the five broad areas you will find your specialized pro-gram of study to help you prepare for your career goals.

Credit Retrieval OptionsStudents who have failed to earn credit in a class: please contact your counselor or RAM Prep teacher as soon as possible to make arrangements for credit retrieval options. Please don’t put off this important responsibility.

Post-High School PlanningFour-Year Colleges and Universities: Students who plan to apply to four-year colleges are required to take either the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) or the American College Test (ACT). Most four-year colleges have similar entrance require-ments. However, students and parents should review individual college requirements carefully. Information is available in the Career Center and by going online to the college of your choice.

Community and Technical Colleges: Two-year community colleges and technical colleges are open to everyone. A place-ment test is required for placement in English and math classes and needs to be completed before registering for classes. Ifyour test level does not indicate college level competencies, remedial courses will be required.

Students who do not meet all of the four-year college or university admission requirements may enroll in a community col-lege transfer program and when the requirements are completed, then transfer to a four-year school.

Apprenticeship: An apprentice is a wage-earning worker who learns a craft or skills through planned, supervised work on the job. Admission requirements to apprenticeship programs vary, depending on the characteristics of the occupation. Gen-erally, a prospective apprentice needs to be 18 years of age and have a high school diploma. Specific information can be obtained from the Bureau of Apprenticeship Training, U.S. Department of Labor, and the Washington Department of Labor and Industries, Apprenticeship section. See Washington State Registered Apprenticeship programs at www.LNI.wa.gov/TradesLicensing/Apprenticeship.

Military: All military programs, enlistment, ROTC and academies require the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) test and a high school diploma. For ROTC programs and academies, the four-year college and universityadmission requirements listed above must also be met. Academy applicants must obtain a Congressional nomination in or-der to be considered for an appointment. Students interested in ROTC or the academies must contact their school counselorto apply in the spring of their junior year.

AmeriCorps: The AmeriCorps program offers opportunities for adults of all ages and backgrounds to serve through a net-work of partnerships with local and national nonprofit groups. Whether your service makes a community safer, gives a child a second chance or helps protect the environment, you will be getting things done through AmeriCorps. Participants can choose a variety of options from tutoring, environmental jobs, building houses, etc. Full time participants who complete theirservice will receive compensation to go toward their education.

Financial AidAdditional information about all post-high school educational options and financial aid information and scholarships are available through the Counseling Center, Career Center, RAM Prep and through the prospective college. All students are encouraged to complere their FAFSA in January of their senior year. Many colleges, including YVCC, allocate financial aid on a first come first serve basis.

YV TechYV-Tech is the regional skills center available at no charge to all West Valley studnets. They work closely with Yakima Valley Community College, Perry Technical Institute, The Pacific NW Regional Council of Carpenters, Job Corp, The City of Yakima, and other technical and community colleges to provide advanced placement, apprenticeship training, and free college credits for high school students. YV-Tech is currently developing programs in partnership with Boeing, Puget Sound Ship Yard, and the Central Washington Police Academy. Currently, over 90 percent of the YV-Tech programs connect to post-secondary training. This significantly reduces student-training time, costs, and allows students early entrance into the workforce with entry-level industrial skills.

Skills USASkillsUSA is a partnership of students, teachers and industry work-ing together to ensure America has a skilled workforce. SkillsUSA helps each student excel. SkillsUSA is a national nonprofit organi-zation serving teachers and high school and college students who are preparing for careers in trade, technical and skilled service occupations, including health occupations.

Digital Design Digital design, a term used to describe a wide variety of computer related skills, includes work in fields such as web design, digital imaging and 3D modeling. Digital advertising and web design firms compete with individual designers to sell their expertise, while artists use the same mediums to express themselves.

FFA“Future Farmers of America” was founded by a group of young farmers back in 1928. Their mission was to prepare future gen-erations for the challenges of feeding a growing population. They taught us that agriculture is more than planting and harvesting-- it’s a science, it’s a business and it’s an art. FFA continues to help the next generation rise up to meet those challenges by helping its members to develop their own unique talents and explore their interests in a broad range of career pathways. So today, we are still the Future Farmers of America. But, we are the Future Biolo-gists, Future Chemists, Future Veterinarians, Future Engineers and Future Entrepreneurs of America, too.
