Defending champ Eagles fall in openerby Warren Kozireski

Kendall opened their bid for a third consecutive Genesee Region Division I boy’s basketball title with a 53-42 loss to Barker in the non-conference season start for both teams.

Brandon Miller had three field goals and Jacob Ramsdell added a pair of baskets to help stake the Eagles to a 13-11 second quarter lead, but Barker closed the half on a 9-4 run to take a lead they would not relinquish.

The two teams combined for 32 points in the third quarter as Kendall closed to within one point of the lead on a three-pointer by junior Collin Lewis and a put-back at the horn by Ramsdell. Barker then put the contest

out of reach with a 13-2 run to open the final eight minute quarter.

Ramsdell tied Barker’s Nathan Luckman with a game-high 17 points. He added 13 rebounds and five blocked shots. Miller finished with ten points despite leaving with an ankle injury late in the third quarter. Lewis and freshman Nathan Warters each scored five points with Warters adding three assists and three steals.

Kendall, under first year head coach Matthew Zimmer, started a pair of seniors, two juniors and a freshman as they try to add to their run of Re-gion championships. Their 2014-15 season ended in the second round of the Section V playoffs with a road loss to Dundee.

Cummings goal lifts BrockportGolden Eagles to third win

Senior defenseman Chad Cummings picked an opportune time to score just the fourth goal of his collegiate career. With visiting Fredonia and Brockport tied 2-2, Cummings took a pass from freshman Tim Kielich and put his shot though a screen into the lower right corner of the net on the power play with only 87 seconds remaining to seal a 3-2 win.

“We were just playing catch up there trying to open up the lane shot that they were blocking all night,” Cum-mings said. “So finally we worked it side to side so they drifted over and I finally got a shot off that got through to the net and (Chase) Nieuwendyk had a great screen in front. It went in the net thank God.”

Brockport jumped out to a 1-0 lead with a power play goal at 15:55 of the first period when Dylan Shapiro banged in a rebound from a Chris Luker shot. Freshman defenseman Nick Palumbo also was credited with an assist on the play.

Fredonia tied the contest at 9:03 of the second when the Golden Eagles got caught on a long shift, but the Golden

Eagles retook the lead just 1:24 later as Kielich put a hard wrist shot over the right shoulder of the goaltender after a pass from Jeremy DeFazio.

The Blue Devils again tied the game 2-2 with a power play goal at 12:36 of the second, but the Golden Eagles made it 3-2 just 55 seconds into the third as Zac Sikich knocked in the rebound from a Nieuwendyk shot.

Once more Fredonia tied it midway through the third after a cross ice pass, but Cummings finally sealed the win.

Freshman goaltender Cole Burack made 29 saves in earning his first win in his first collegiate start.

“The last three years we’ve come out struggling (to start the season), so this was a big win for us,” Cummings said. “We needed this as a team to come together and working as a unit and playing good hockey before we come down to crunch time.”

“Tim and Chad were patient with the puck and finally, finally got one to go through from the point, because they are so good at blocking shots,” head coach Brian Dickinson said. “Nice to get one there because I did not want to go to overtime.”

C-C Middle School students explore career options in new workshop series

Fifth-and-sixth-graders at Churchville-Chili Middle School have a unique oppor-tunity this year to explore educational and career areas that they find interest in and meet community experts in those fields. Students can choose from monthly work-shops on topics like Renewable Energy, Electronics and Programming, Engineer-ing, Theatre and Drama, Government, GPS/Orienteering/Geocaching, Nano-technology and Public Safety. The Career Exploration Workshop series kicked off on November 24 with guest speakers and hands-on experiences in Agriculture and Food Science.

Students visited guest experts at six education stations. Bob King, Laura Pen-man and Suzanne Long from Monroe Com-

munity College explained how to tell which part of the plant is used for food, and the difference between fruits and vegetables; Greg Sharpe from Genesee Community College demonstrated the importance of sanitation in food preparation; registered dietician Rachel Schur helped students measure the amount of sugar in a variety of different drinks; Ted Miller, from Worm Power, revealed the secrets of worm com-posting and fertilizer; and local farmer Kim Zuber showed students sheep’s wool in all of its stages from raw, just-sheared to yarn.

A favorite station was run by fellow middle school student and aspiring chef Noah Jenkins, who introduced his audi-ence to simple, healthy cooking and home food preparation. (Noteable mention: Noah will be competing on “Chopped Junior” on the Food Network on December 8, at 8 p.m.)

Student feedback was enthusiastic: “I loved learning about all the different sta-tions! It was a great two hours and I’m glad I got to do this.” “I really liked the cucumbers at the cooking station. Also, I really liked bringing home some wool from the wool station. I loved joking around at the worm station and my group had a lot of fun. I think this was a great experience and I would love to do it again!”

Upcoming workshops will take place on the last Tuesday of each month. Commu-nity experts interested in participating as guest speakers are invited to contact pro-gram coordinators Andrea Lynch (alynch@cccsd.org) or Patti Saucke (psaucke@cccsd.org).

Mattie Kathryn Benedict, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jeffrey and Debra Benedict of Churchville, and Kevin Richard Laley, son of David and Marjorie Laley of Churchville, were married August 21, 2015. The ceremony was held at the Linehan Chapel at Nazareth College, Pittsford with Rev. Gregory Benedict officiating the ceremony.

Given in marriage by her father, the bride was attended by her sister, Emily Brown, as maid of honor with Kristen McConnell, Leah Stacy and Katie Meister as bridesmaids.

The best man was Joseph Ahl. Andrew Benedict, brother of the bride, AJ Simms and Mark Bellavia served as ushers.

The bride graduated from Roberts Wesleyan College and holds a bachelor of science degree in Childhood and Special Education. She is employed as the Day Care and After School Program Director at Pearce 4 Kids Childcare Center.

The groom has a bachelor of arts degree in Mathematics with a certification in

Secondary Education from Nazareth College, as well as a masters of science degree in Mathematics from the University of Rhode Island. He is employed as a high school math teacher at Fairport High School.
