Dear Westside Families, This first semester at Westside has provided me the opportunity to meet people, develop different routines, and experience new learning each day. It has been a great start to the school year. We have started with excellent energy in the building and look forward to carrying it throughout the year. In this issue, I will share some highlights of upcoming events, provide a parenting tip, and extend a thank you. We are ⅓ of the way to the end of the first semester. Although it seems early to be having parent-teacher conferences, they are just around the corner. Conferences provide a great opportunity to meet with your child’s teachers. Dates for high school conferences are Monday, October 3 and Wednesday, October 5. These will be from 5-9 p.m. each evening. First Semester Final ExamsFirst semester exams will be given on Wednesday and Thursday, December 21 and 22. These tests will be very important to your teenager, and we strongly encourage you to make every effort to have your student present for these exams. As you know, the semester ends on December 22 and Winter Break continues through January 6. School resumes on Monday, January 9. Please try to arrange family vacations to start after the 22nd if at all possible. It is extremely difficult for staff to prepare exams early for students. Students who find it necessary to be gone during these scheduled exams must see an administrator by December 2 to get a white slip. Requests to take exams early must be in writing from a parent/guardian.

Conference Week ScheduleMonday, 10/3 • Normal Day, 8:00 a.m.-3:10 p.m. • Conferences 5:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m.

Tuesday, 10/4 • Normal Day, 8:00 a.m.-3:10 p.m. Wednesday, 10/5 • Normal Day, 8:00 a.m.-2:50 p.m. • Conferences 5:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m.

Thursday, 10/6 • No School

Friday, 10/7 • No School

ConferencesParents traditionally find parent-teacher conferences the most meaningful event of the semester, and you are strongly urged to attend. We recommend that you get your student’s list of courses and teachers’ names from PowerSchool to bring with you to avoid the long lines at the main entrance. However, that information will be available in the main entrance. Please limit your conferences to five minutes if others are waiting. If you need additional time, please sched-ule another meeting with the teacher as he/she will be very willing to do so.

Be aware of “No Parking” signs along the east side of 87th Street from Pacific to Loveland. Police will ticket cars parked illegally on these streets.

Attendance MattersSchool attendance isn’t just a good idea; it’s the law. Nebraska statute requires schools to report to the County Attorney the names of students who miss more than 20 school days or the hourly equivalent during the school year. This includes time missed due to tardies and/or partial attendance days, in addition to all absences—both excused and unexcused.

Regular school attendance is key in any student’s academic success. Furthermore, regular school attendance helps students develop habits of punctuality, self-discipline, and responsibility. By law, parents are responsible for their children’s attendance, and we depend upon your help in ensuring that your child gets to school each day.

If you have questions about District policy as it relates to Nebraska’s compulsory education statutes, please con-tact Alan Bone, Student Services Coordinator, at 402-390-2150.

National Honor Society EligibilityWestside’s Honor Society is a chapter of the national organization and is bound by its rules and regulations. Juniors and seniors who have a mark point average of 6.40, have passed the reading competency and Future Plan and have no Incompletes or Failures on their records are eligible for induction into the Society. In addition, Juniors must have completed 60 hours and Seniors must have completed 80 hours of Service Learning. These requirements must be completed by January 20, 2017. No exceptions will be made for this deadline.Selection further depends on consideration of char-acter, leadership and service. Staff members are given National Honor Society definitions of “character” and “leadership” and are asked to give specific evi-dence of how any eligible student has not demon-strated these qualities. Students are asked to complete a Student Activity/Service Information Form. School activities/service and community service are recorded by the student and rated by the appropriate sponsor. A total of ten points on this form is required for con-sideration. Seven of the ten points must come from activities at Westside High School. A faculty commit-tee then reviews each student’s qualifications and rec-ommends students for membership. The membership induction ceremony will be held on April 20, 2017.

Ninth Graders And Independent Study TimeToward the end of the first quarter (October 5) ninth graders who receive recommendations from their teachers, counselors and/or Dean will be assigned to an Instructional Materials Center (IMC) during their independent study time. Ninth graders who receive a high responsibility rating and who are being success-ful in their classes will continue to have their choice of attending an IMC, the courtyard, a classroom, or lab during their independent study mods.

HomeroomHomeroom advisors meet with students on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday each week from 8:00-8:15 a.m. Every other Tuesday homeroom advisors meet individually with homeroom students to discuss grades, attendance, behavior, service learning hours, PBIS expectations and minimum competencies. We want this to be a positive experience for all students and another way to help them be successful at WHS.

Westside CAPS CornerStudents in the CAPS Program have had a busy start to the year!

Emerging Technology/Business Solutions (ET/BS), facilitated by Lane Lindburg, made a trip to Lincoln to learn about Hudl and explore possible job shadow-ing and internship opportunities.

Seven CAPS Emerging Technology students traveled to St. Louis to participate in a Hackathon hosted by the St. Louis CAPS program. The two teams rose to the challenges presented to them over the two day event. They were also able to learn about the “IT incubator” environment being built in the St. Louis area. An experience that opened them up to St. Louis area higher education and career opportunities.

Health Science, facilitated by Dee Harrell, visited Think Whole Person Healthcare, recruited students into HOSA, and had a visit from OFD Paramedic Dustin Talacko. Students also volunteered at Aksar-ben Village for the Corporate Cup Run.

STEM, facilitated by Leah Dreckman, Tyler Foster, Paul Cross, Jeremy Long, Judy Stucky and Gregg Ratliff, met the challenges of Outward Bound’s Ropes Course earlier in September. The goal of the day long event was to promote leadership and team building. Our STEMmers have been busy being the engineers and designers of bee hotels, robots, lab tables, and all manner of the architectural components of buildings.

We added 59 new students to the program to start the year. We are actively recruiting new CAPS partici-pants to reach our goal of 400 students served by the program by start of the 2018 school year.

If you are interested in participating in CAPS and you are a 9th -11th grader, send an email to Dawn Nizzi, CAPS Program Director, at [email protected].

STEM AcademyStudents in STEM Academy 1 and 2 were given the opportunity to experience the Low Ropes and High Ropes Challenge Courses, respectively, on Friday, Sep-tember 2, at Outward Bound at NorthStar. Students focused on team-building, risk-taking, and communi-cation. Sophomores in attendance included: Gabrielle Wahl, Kendrell Woodson, Gabriell Buford, Joseph Dobler, Kathrine Roman, Molly Fox, Samantha Pe-terson, Dylan Spier. There were also 31 freshmen who attended the event. Students will use the skills they learned at this experience to enhance their experi-ences in their classes they take at the high school, as well as their interactions with peers.

Guidance News

Page 4

News From the Guidance OfficeAs we approach the middle of the first semester stu-dents are settling into a rhythm with their classes. If your student is struggling academically, consider a few of these ideas: contact the teacher for suggestions on how the student can improve performance, arrange an assigned mod with the teacher of the class that is causing difficulty, try a different method of keeping track of assignments, establish a central study location at home where computer use and homework comple-tion can be monitored, and/or request restrictions be placed on school laptops.Freshmen Group Guidance classes are finishing up. The topics covered this year in Freshman Group Guidance included helping students focus on their strengths and personality, WHS graduation require-ments, suicide prevention, positive psychology, and a beginning look at college entrance requirements. Students have been working on building a relationship with their counselor and adjusting to high school.Sophomores will have online guidance tasks throughout the year. Their first task is to register for a naviance account. The students were emailed in-structions. Naviance is a college and career planning website. Juniors were given an online task by their school counselors. They were asked to log into their Na-viance accounts and add colleges they are thinking about. Juniors will be preparing for the ACT in the spring in junior guidance. Seniors should be in the process of meeting with their assigned counselor for a senior interview at which time they will review their graduation progress as well as their post secondary planning progress. If they have not done so, they should make an appoint-ment as soon as possible with their counselor. During second quarter, seniors should be very busy complet-ing graduation requirements such as service learning hours and competencies. There are several more ACT and SAT test dates that seniors can still take advan-tage of. For a complete list of college planning activi-ties and deadlines, please refer to the guidance calen-dar, which is available on the Westside website. If you are unfamiliar with the college planning and applica-tion process, please feel free to contact or schedule an appointment with your student’s assigned counselor or Vicki Londer at 402-343-2759 and Lisa Hatch at 402-343-2775, the College Counselors.

Don’t forget about College and Career Family Con-nection (Naviance) for parents of seniors which can be found under Teaching and Learning then College and Career on the Westside High School website. This is an online program that allows students and parents to research and compare colleges, view when college representatives will visit Westside as well as track applications. Please refer to the senior planning booklet or contact the Guidance office at 402-343-2610 to set up your account. You can also follow us on twitter, @WGuidance. We also have a counselor corner on Westside Wired.

Family Connection ~ New!We are pleased to introduce Family Connection – a comprehensive website that you and your student can use to make plans about colleges and careers. Family Connection is linked with Naviance, a website that we use in the Guidance office to track and analyze data about college and career plans, so it provides up-to-date information that’s specific to Westside High School.Starting Sophomore year, students will create a Fam-ily Connection account and complete certain tasks related to their future plans. Junior year, students will do a College search and add colleges to their “Colleges I’m Thinking” list. Seniors use Naviance for all things college! This is where they can keep track of deadlines, search for scholarships, apply to college, request transcripts, etc.As parents/guardians of sophomores through seniors, you also have access to Family Connection. Please e-mail Jennifer Keilig: [email protected] for your activation code and registration directions.

College Essay ResourcesThe Composition Team has put together a Google Classroom where students can access resources for help in writing college essays. There are links to out-side resources such as college websites, sample papers, and the instructional materials from the Composition Course. This will be a live, working site where new information will be continually added as teachers find new sources that may be helpful to students. Students may contact a Composition teacher in the English IMC or via email at any time if s/he needs additional help or specific feedback from a teacher. For ques-tions, please contact Emily Hough at [email protected]. Composition teachers include: Emily Hough, Sue Stehly, Sarah Schoenrock, Denise We-gener, and Tierney Hermann. The code to enroll in Google Classroom is: 3ov4vst

AP CoursesAP courses offer college level work to students while earning high school credit. Students study subjects in greater depth and detail, enhance writing skills, use problem-solving techniques and develop study habits that prepare them for college academics. In addition, AP courses provide students the opportunity to pos-sibly earn accelerated college placement or college credit. Westside offers a wide variety of approved AP classes in Social Studies, English, Language, Science, Math and the Arts. Many of our AP classes are also affiliated with local universities for dual enrollment credit at reduced tuition. Over the last several years, the number of students taking AP classes has steadily grown, from 82 students in 2004-05 to over 300 students in 2015-16. Students registered in an AP class at WHS are required to take the AP exam in May. Exam review sessions and class-room support are available to all students.

Active Scholar AwardFreshman and sophomore students are eligible for the Active Scholar Award medallion given in the spring at the 9/10 Awards Night on May 2, 2017. Recipi-ents must complete the application, have a 6.40 mark point average, have no incompletes for any semester, and have earned at least 3 points through involvement in clubs, sports and activities in the year the award is given. In addition, freshmen must have completed at least 10 hours of service and sophomores must have completed at least 30 hours of community service.

Financial Aid Completion NightFinancial Aid Completion Night is Tuesday, October 18 at 6:00 p.m. in room 220. Parents and students can bring their laptops and receive help completing the FAFSA.

From The NurseMedications at School -- If your child takes a medication, prescription or over the counter, the medication must be kept in the Health Office and a medication sheet must be on file before that medication can be given. No medication will be given with verbal permission. Medication Autho-rization forms can be found on the High School website or contact the Health Office.Flu Season -- Please have your student vaccinated against the seasonal flu when vaccines become available. H1N1 is now included in the same vaccine. Encourage your student to practice frequent hand washing and to stay home when feeling ill. The American Academy of Pediatrics released a policy state-ment advising that the nasal spray, Flu Mist, “should not be used in any setting during the 2016-17 flu season.” It is recommended that all children 6 months and older get the flu shot instead.Leaving School When Ill -- All students must check with the Health office before parents are called. Stu-dents should not call their parents from a cell phone or a teacher’s desk to let them know they are sick. Instead, students should see the nurse. She will check the student's temperature and allow a call to a parent. The nurse needs to talk to a parent before the student can be excused and dismissed from class. If your student goes home ill without first seeing the nurse, he/she will be UNEXCUSED from class, and the dean will be notified about the absence.Feel free to call us with any questions or concerns, 402-343-2624. Thank you!! Deb Raven, RN and Liz Grandizio, Health Assistant

Service Learning UpdatePlease review the following requirements of Westside’s Service Learning Program to help your child reach the graduation requirement of 80 hours.

Students must obtain a pre-approved service learning form from their homeroom advisor prior to performing their service project. Homeroom advisors must know exactly what the service is before signing their approval. No blank forms will be given out. Forms will not be mailed home.

Service areas with a 20 hour maximum: Individual Services, Political Campaigns and Non-Profit Haunted Houses.

The Individual Service area constitutes helping out a family member or individual person (neighbor or acquain-tance) who is in need. Westside encourages a verified “need” be present in which the student can learn and grow (example: assisting someone who is recovering from surgery or helping a senior with lawn care.) Only 20 hours total will count towards the graduation requirement. Babysitting, moving, helping an able person build some-thing, family chores and household responsibilities do not count.

Mission trips, counseling/coaching at day camps, and day long projects count up to 8 hours a day, with no maxi-mum amount (unless mentioned above in one of the capped areas).

Spring FYI: “9/10 Honors Night”--Freshman who have 100 or more hours will receive a certificate of achievement. Sophomores who have over 200 hours will also receive a certificate. Freshmen and Sophomores who would like to be considered for this honor should turn in all hours by April 7, 2017.

Deadlines: First semester hours are due December 2, 2016, second semester hours are due May 12, 2017 (April 7 for Seniors). Be sure to get credit for hours by making these deadlines. Any hours turned in after the deadline are not accepted.

Why are there deadlines?

Deadlines are needed to encourage student responsibility, organization, to verify hours with agencies and to keep an accurate record for students and parents (printed on each report card.)

Updates on student’s total hours will be recorded on the student’s report card and in PowerSchool. PowerSchool is updated every Monday afternoon. If you have any questions over PowerSchool and the total number of hours, please contact Mrs. Schau at 402-343-2804 or e-mail, [email protected].

After School FacilitiesStudents should not be on school property after 4:00 p.m. each day unless they are under the direct super-vision of a teacher, sponsor, or coach. Students need to make arrangements so they can be picked up by 4:00 p.m. each day. School facilities should not be considered a 'hang out' area during the late afternoon and early evening hours.

We have had many students trying to gain access into the gyms, auditorium, and classroom areas after school. Unless students are under the direct supervi-sion of a teacher, sponsor, or coach, they will not be allowed into those areas. If students are in those areas without appropriate adult supervision, they will be asked to leave. Non-compliance or disruptive behavior will not be tolerated.

Student Messages/PagingIt is very difficult for us to deliver phone messages or items to students. Your help would be greatly appreciated if doctor appointments and after school arrange-ments were made before your student leaves home.No one may be paged over the intercom while school is in session. Due to meet-ings conducted before and after school, students may not be paged during that time except in extreme emergency. Paging will be allowed after 4:15 p.m.Please have your student make all after school ar-rangements before leaving home. There is a phone available in the main office for students to use if they need to let you know they are staying after school.

Request For Homework When AbsentStudents who are ill and will miss school for 3 days or more may request homework. Parents/students can communicate with teachers via email on homework and missing assignments. Many assignments are listed on Blackboard for students to access. Or you can

contact your counselor directly or the Guidance Office at 402-343-2616 or 402-343-2610. Teacher email address-es are available on the high school website, go to “Departments” and click on “Faculty”. Students scheduled to miss school for family vacations should see their Dean to obtain a white slip and then coordinate those

absences and homework with their teachers.

Inclement Weather Policy Nebraska Winters can get pretty tough at times. When snow accum- ulates and the bitter wind blows, Westside Community Schools share with parents a concern for the safety of their children. Here are a few guidelines that should help us in working together to assure the safety of students, no matter how bad the weather. • If bad weather forces the closing of school, you will receive an automated message from the District either the night before or that morning. We will also ask the local radio and television stations to make an announcement. Make sure your phone and email information are up to date. • If schools are open during inclement weather, parents should decide whether or not their children will attend school. Notify attendance, 402-343-2626, if you plan to keep your student at home.• When extreme weather conditions develop during school hours, it is our policy not to dismiss students. Many children do not have adult supervision at home during the day and are safer at school.• Parents may pick their children up during the school day if they feel it is necessary.• Because of transportation requirements, there may be times when other school districts close while District 66 Schools remain open.• School personnel will remain in the buildings as long as children are present.
