November 2012GardeninG tips
• Brown patch will continue to plague St. Augustine lawns as nights get cooler and humidity and rain continue. Discolored circles will appear in low areas almost overnight. Apply a fungicide recom-mended for brown patch according to label directions. Avoid walking through brown-patched turf. It spreads easily from the bottom of your shoes. If brown patch appears in the same lawn areas every year, add an inch or two of sandy topsoil to eliminate those low spots.• Fertilize St. Augustine turf with a winterizing formula to promote root growth over the winter months. Lower your lawn mover blades now and mow on a schedule that cuts no more than one-third of the grass blade away.• As chrysanthemums and other perennials finish blooming, cut flowering stalks to the ground to permit all strength to be used in making root growth.• Feed roses lightly, but avoid nitrogen fertilizers. Do not prune now. Keep up spraying program and water deeply.• Remove dead foliage and plant debris to help eradicate insects and disease organisms. Thin out and transfer volunteer seedlings. Beds made now will benefit by weathering before being planted. If soil is heavy, dig six inches deep, leave rough, cover with gymsum and strawy manure, water and allow to mellow.• Bananas are more likely to bear fruit if the trunk does not die back in winter. Cut banana stalks back to six feet, wrap with newspaper and burlap.
• Continue mulching for winter. Build up a thick top mulch to protect roots from freezing and winter drying. Don’t throw away those pine tree needles; they make great acidic mulch for azaleas, gardenias and next Spring’s impatiens.• Place pansies in beds after weather has cooled. Use a little blood meat mixed in soil under each plant.• Now is the best time to plant trees and shrubs.
thanksgiving triviaThanksgiving was celebrated throughout the colonies after fall har-vests. However, all thirteen colonies did not celebrate Thanksgiving at the same time until October 1777. In 1789, George Washington declared the day a holiday. Sarah J. Hale, a poet, had begun lob-bying for a national Thanksgiving holiday. During the Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln, looking for ways to unite the nation, discussed the subject with Hale. He gave his Thanksgiving Proclama-tion in 1863 and declared the last Thursday in November a day of thanksgiving. In 1941, President Roosevelt signed a bill making the fourth Thursday the official holiday. Each year, the President of the United States pardons a turkey before Thanksgiving at a White House ceremony. The tradition’s origin is uncertain. One story claims that Harry Truman pardoned a turkey in 1947, but the Truman Library has been unable to find any evidence for this. Another claims that the tradition dates back to Abraham Lincoln pardoning his son Tad’s pet turkey. Remember the men and women fighting for our freedom in loca-tions near and far. They are there defending our right to celebrate Thanksgiving.

SURVIVING BLACK FRIDAYBlack Friday, the day after Thanksgiving and the beginning of the Christmas shopping season, can be thrilling and stressful all at the same time. With stores offering drastically marked-down prices on in-demand items on Black Friday, Thanksgiving Day sales bring big crowds and long lines are to be expected. To successfully make it through the mall without being pummeled by other moms looking for a good deal, we have some tips and tricks to make your holiday shopping spree a little easier:
Weeks Before Black Friday: • Make a list of the must-have products that you are shopping for this holiday season, including the names of the people for whom you are shopping. This will make your day more organized and will reduce the number of unnecessary purchases that you make. • Sign up for store email updates so that you will be among the first to know what will be on sale. • Print out any online coupons you may have. • Sign up for free store club cards that offer discounts or coupons. Stores like Barnes & Noble offer such programs. • Consider outlet shopping. The Day Before Black Friday: • Eat a lot of turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing and pumpkin pie. This will not help your shopping, per se, but will make you feel happy and satisfied. • Get a good’s night sleep the night before. Thanks to all that food in your belly it shouldn’t be too hard to fall asleep. The Day Of Thanksgiving Day Sales: • Know exactly the time that the stores you want to hit are open and go to the store that has the best deals and/or the gift you want to get the most first. Be there at least a half-hour before it opens if the gift is popular. • Leave the kids at home; this is not a day to worry about handholding and good behavior. • Be caffeinated and full - don’t shop on low energy and an empty stomach. • Pack snacks so that you don’t have to stop your marathon-shopping day to grab some grub from the food court. • Bring along a MP3 player or portable CD player to help pass the time when you are waiting to pay for your finds. • Don’t worry about purchasing little gifts today, such as stocking stuffers, but rather focus on gifts that are bigger, harder to find and more expensive. • Consider this a good day to look for that new winter coat or little black dress you need. Clothing sales are usually very good on Black Friday, because so many people are already in the stores looking for toys and gifts. • If a product is not available, but the store offers a rain check, take it. Make sure that when you cash in your rain check you are getting the price that the product was listed at for that day. www.kaboose.com

Langham Creek Cheer iS TeXaS ProUD
The Langham Creek Cheer Squad hosted over 1200 beautifully dressed guests who proved that cowboy boots go with everything at their fabulous Homecoming extravaganza on Saturday, September 22, 2012. The Berry Center came alive with Texas Chic decorations highlighting the “Black Tie Texas” theme and great music and fun. Thank you to all the cheer parents and LCHS administrators who worked to create this special evening for the students. Also, a big thank you to our local merchants who made donations to this event to make it even more enjoyable for all involved: Tailored Sweets by Kathleen Wiggins, Cypress Driving Academy, HEB and Randalls. Thank you for your support of our school and community.
When the cheerleaders were not working on Homecoming, they, along with our electrifying mascot, Larry the Lobo, could be found on the sidelines of our mighty Lobo football games and several of the LC volleyball games. Our Larry the Lobo, aka Josh Attra, has been lighting up the “dance-offs” with the other school mascots. He always gets the crowd cheering with his moves!
LCHS Cheerleading is year round - they represent and support all the best Langham Creek has to offer. Thank you, Cheerleaders and Josh, for your tireless efforts!
Next on the agenda is competition season. The cheer squad will be working on a routine that they will take to different competitions in December and January. In the midst of that, they will be in the gyms supporting our various Lobo basketball teams. Go Lobos!

CYPRESS-FAIRBANKS INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT
WWW.CFISD.NET
IMPORTANT DATESNovember 21st - 23rd - Student/Staff Holiday
THIRD ANNUAL CYPRESS HOOPS INVITATIONAL
Cy-Fair Educational Foundation (CFEF) is gearing up for their highly anticipated Cypress Hoops Invitational Tournament to be held for the third year December 6 through 8, 2012. Twenty-four high school varsity level teams, including those from Cy-Fair ISD and outside the district, will compete over the three-day event at various high schools with the championship games held at the Berry Center.
It takes a lot of community volunteers to put on an event that is as well run and organized as the Cypress Hoops Invitational. “Instrumental in last year’s event were John Fox, Fox and Bubela and Leslie Martone, who is now President of the Cy-Fair Chamber of Commerce and sponsors such as the event’s underwriter, North Cypress Medical Center,” said Hull.
Last year the tournament raised $17,161.58. All proceeds raised through entry fees, game tickets and sponsorships go to the Foun-dation’s “Donate to Educate” program, which provides college scholarships for district students as well as staff development grants to CFISD. For more information about ways to participate, contact Marie Holmes at 281-807-3591 or [email protected] (email).
CY-FAIR ISD & VOLUNTEERS IN PUBLIC SCHOOLS (VIPS)WHERE “VOLUNTEERS ARE TREASURES!”
All of our volunteers are true treasured heroes. They help in the library, sell school spirit items, organize fundraisers, read to a class-room, make costumes and test vision and hearing. The list is endless and their experience is vast. If you listen to their stories though, you will find that in all the things volunteers do, there is an element of discovery. They find not only what a child can do, but what their own treasured gift might be. And yes, there has probably even been an encounter with a dragon or two along the way.
Cypress-Fairbanks ISD is so fortunate to be able to draw from such a great diversity of skills and knowledge in our community. VIPS (Volunteers in Public Schools) in Cy-Fair ISD center the attention of their service on supporting students and staff and making a signifi-cant contribution to the education of children. These jewels in our district give freely of their time and resources and have an impact on the academic and personal development of Cy-Fair ISD students.
If you are interested in being involved in Cy-Fair schools as a volun-teer and making a difference or would like more information, please contact Pam Scott, Partners in Education Director at, 281-894-3950.
Cy-Fair ISD & Volunteers in Public Schools (VIPS) November and December 2012 Events for our Treasured Volunteers:
November 8th - VIPS General Meeting - 9:30 AM to 12 PM, Berry Center. Open to all CFISD volunteers, parents, staff and community members. Get the latest information on CFISD volunteering and learn ways to improve your volunteer program through networking with other volunteers in our district!
November 27th - PIE Mentor Training - 9:30 AM to 11:30 AM, Berry Center. Training for individuals committed to serve as a role model and friend to CFISD students.
There are no VIPS events scheduled for the month of December at this time. Be sure to check us out in January when the opportunities for volunteering are in full swing again.

have a stress free thanksgiving!
1. Get Enough SleepThis is the number one cause of stress, we run ourselves ragged and don’t take the time to relax and recharge. A good night’s sleep will have you feeling refreshed and ready to take on the holidays. 2. Know your BoundariesIf you have accepted to cook the holiday meal, make sure you know just how many family members will be attending your feast. Know when to say no to extra stragglers that family members might want to bring along. This will make your meal planning easier. 3. Count to 10It is a good thing to take a breath and count to ten to collect yourself. You will make it through!
4. Let Bygones be BygonesThere will be family members who love to make snarky little com-ments, we all have one of those in our families. The best way to approach this is to just ignore the comment and hopefully, they will stop once they see they haven’t gotten a rise out of you. 5. Keep Everyone BusyAssign people duties, get the kids to set the table, have Aunt Margie help with dinner, get everyone involved so you don’t have to take it all on yourself. Thanksgiving is all about giving thanks for what we have in our lives. Go around the dinner table and have everyone state what he or she are thankful for; don’t forget to remember those who have passed to keep them in spirit.

Please note: the following is what the American egg Board says on using raw eggs: With eggs and all other raw foods from animals, there is a small possibility of Salmonella food poisoning. The risk is greater for those who are pregnant, elderly or very young and those with medical problems, which have impaired their immune systems. These indi-viduals should avoid raw and undercooked animal foods.
Healthy people need to remember that there is a very small risk and treat eggs and other raw animal foods accordingly. Use only properly refrigerated, clean, sound-shelled, fresh, grade AA or A eggs. Avoid mixing yolks and whites with the shell. Refrigerate broken-out eggs, prepared egg dishes and other foods if you won’t be consuming them within an hour.
