President’s Message:

Another year is rapidly drawing to aclose. I believe that is has been a verysuccessful year. At present, our mem-bership stands at 91.

There has been a number of changes to the clubpremises including the purchase of an additional lathe, new Nova scroll chucks and two new Jacobs chucks. The floor where the stage once stood has been con-creted and lino tiles have been laid. Also, over thecoming weeks the premises will be given a coat ofpaint.

The club has participated at demonstrations at theBlacktown City Festival, Linwood House, WisteriaHouse, St Marys Street Carnival, Bunnings at BellaVista, Mulgoa Bicentenary and Carlingford NursingHome.

Jo Farrugia has worked very hard and through a dedi-cated effort has set up a web page for the club whichenables our members to access newsletters and clubactivities on line. It also provides a link to The Wood-turners Guild and our sponsors. This page has alreadybeen directly responsible for a number of enquiries inrelation to membership and activities.

The plans for the open day on Saturday 5 Decemberare progressing well and I sincerely hope that mem-bers and their families and friends will come along andmake it a huge success.

At this time I would like to thank everyone who hascontributed to the day to day running of the club andits activities including opening and closing the club, assisting in stores, cleaning the clubhouse, transport-ing machinery to demonstrations, attending demon-strations, catering, organising functions, maintainingfinancial records, organising demonstrators for maxi-days, Guild representatives, assisting in collectingwood from various locations. To these people (toonumerous to name, and with my memory I would hateto leave anyone out) you know who you are, a veryhearty thank you. Your assistance so freely givenmakes my job much easier.

It is that time of the year again to wish allmembers and their families a very happy andsafe Christmas. A very happy and healthy NewYear and come back next year refreshed, relaxedand creative.

Please do not forget our Christmas lunch on Sunday13 December at Seven Hill Toongabbie RSL. It wouldbe great to see all of you there.

Lynnwood House 8th NovemberBob Young

A good day was had by all at Lynnwood House withBob Jarvis and Bob Young along with Eddie Catford inthe morning and Ron Devine in the afternoon.Eddie left at midday to attend his annual ballet concert(the mind boggles!!).

The weather alternated between drizzle and overcastuntil the afternoon but did not seem to deter the visi-tors who kept up a steady stream until early afternoon.

Our charity was boosted by a cheque from Lynnwoodfor $60 for some stands made by club members forthem.

We had a good display of bowls and personal itemswhich people wanted for Christmas presents. We hadplenty of tops etc. prepared but for once there was adepleted supply of children.

Rohan and Coleen McCardell called in the afternoon, after the obligatory free R.S.L. lunch, just to make surethat the standards were being kept up.

OPEN DAY 5th Decemberby a jubilant Eddie Catford

Well, what can one say, except “WOW what a suc-cess!.”. This is not only my opinion, but that of the nu-merous visitors and the many members who attendedand it is all due to the sterling efforts of the organisingcommittee, Alan, Rohan and Brian who after a “fewshaky problems” picked up the pieces, took the bit be-tween their teeth and pulled off a most impressive andrewarding day for themselves and also the club.

On behalf of thiscommittee, thanksto ALL thosemembers and nonmembers for theirhelp and supportfrom the “silverspoon polish” ofthe premises in-side and out onThursday to theadvertising in themedia, the printing of fliers, organizing newspapermedia, pamphlet and business card printing and to thedemonstrators.

To the dancers and players of “The Bridge City JazzBand” we extend our grateful thanks for the entertain-ment they provided. That Dixieland jazz sure broughtback pleasant memories. One of our members, ColinBeal, plays the clarinet with the group and the other

members are GrahamBull (keyboard), JimMorrel (drums), ColinDavies (bass), DennisQuinlan (banjo) andJohn Betts (trombone). They play every Fridayat Ashfield CommunityClub.

At our Open Day, the bandwas pleased to have PaulFurniss play a few tuneswith them. He was testingout a blackwood barrelturned for his clarinet by theclub, to aid fine tuning hisinstrument. Paul is wellknown and liked for hisplaying in Europe andAmerica and has his ownband called “The San Fran-cisco Jazz Band”.Thanks to Bob Youngfor donating the raffleprize of a pedal trac-tor and excavator. Mythree year old grand-son will be extremelyhappy to receive thisgift from Santa andwill have many happyhours of enjoyment.

Finally, and most importantly, I thank YOU the mem-bers who dedicated numerous hours of support andlabour, showing that you are proud to be part of theclub. The wearing of our club shirts highlighted ourunity. This was also evident by your commitment in thequality of woodturning and woodworking on displayand for sale. This was as good as I have seen any-where.

This club has quality and a lot to be proud of as con-firmed by the visitors whose comments were verycomplimentary and indicated that they were impressedwith the high standard of the presentation and displayswhich were by far in excess of what they were expect-ing.

In rounding up, from the brighthot sunny day, the entertain-ment, catering, member unity, quality of displays and sales, through to the prospect ofgaining six new membersmade a most gratifying andsuccessful day.

To the committee and all club members, a most sin-cere heartfelt thank you and congratulations on a jobwell done on a day that will be talked about for a longtime to come

Mulgoa Anniversary 9 th November

Things went off with a bang at Mulgoa when about2000 people attended this weekend to help celebratethe village’s 200th birthday.

They visited historical houses, attractions and tookpart in a fete in Mulgoa Park, where Governor MarieBashir opened the celebrations and unveiled a plaque. She inspected the troops then bought a few thingsfrom the stalls

Our club was wellrepresented withManny Farrugia,Bob Taylor, WayneHipwell, BrianBrooks, RohanMcCardell, EddieCatford and BobJarvis.

They gave demon-strations of turningcharity bowls andtops for the kids.

Rohan was disappointed that the Governor didn’t havetime to come over and purchase one of his cheeseplatters. But several others did.

It was a great family day out with displays of machinesof yesteryear, vintage cars and motorbikes and theusual children’s amusements

There was plenty of interest shown in our stand andwe raised another $203.70 towards this year’s charity.

It was also a good opportunity to promote our OpenDay at the clubhouse coming up on the 5th December.

Larry the woodworker called his boss and said: "Hey,boss I'm not coming to work today, I'm really sick, I got aheadache, a stomach ache, my leg hurts, I just can'tmake it in."

The boss says: "Larry I really need you today. When Ifeel sick like that I go to my wife and tell her to give mesex. That makes me feel better and I can go to work. Youshould give it a try."

Two hours later Larry the woodworker calls again: "Boss,I did what you said and I feel great, I'll be in right away.By the way, you sure got a nice house."

Maxiday 15th NovemberBob Hodge & Graham Dawes

We have a lot of greatWoodturners visit ourclub to give demon-strations of their spe-cialities, but it is al-ways pleasing to seesome of our moreexperienced mem-bers who are pre-pared to get out infront of their col-leagues and showsomething a bit morechallenging to turnthan the usual bowls, platters and peppergrinders.

Both Santa andGraham chose pro-jects involving off-set turning and, ina manner similar toBill Sheen andJohn Harris lastmonth, invitedmembers of theaudience to comeout and have a goat the job in hand.

They were also well prepared for their presentation byhaving drawings and samples which they had “pre-pared earlier”.

Bob (Santa) had made two “cheek plates” from 10mmplywood. The centres were accurately located and2mm holes drilled through both. These holes wereused by the spur drive and the live centre in the lathe.

Two pieces of timber which had been dressed to besquare were screwed between the cheeks at a dis-tance from the centre to allow each piece to be rotatedindividually. With the mounting screws tightened andthe speed set to about 1800 rpm, the desired shapewas then turned.

Stop the lathe, loosen the screw at oneend of one piece and rotate it 90°beforeretightening. Start the lathe again andobserve the “shadow effect”. You willsee the shape of one piece and thestraight edge of the piece you have justrotated. Looking through the shadow, carefully turn the straight edge until itsshape matches the other. Repeat thisprocess until both pieces are turned onall four sides.

Bob turned this contemporary squarecandlestick using the method described.

Graham Dawes gave a demonstration of offset turningof a “spoon foot” table leg.

He started by marking the diagonals of both ends ofhis block of timber. He punched the centres of thesediagonals and marked this axis AA.

He then marked a point 10mm from the centre alongone diagonal. He did the same on the other end, beingcareful to move in the same direction along the diago-nal. He punched these points which gave him anotheraxis BB.

With the block set up in the lathe using the centres AA,Graham turned the bead, cove and fillets before stop-ping the lathe and remounting his block using the axisBB to turn the spoon foot as shown in the diagram.

Using the Leady Ring Cutterby Rohan McCardell

The following story tells howthe bowl in the picture wasmade from a piece timbersimilar to the piece on whichthe bowl rests.

The timber is Mackay Cedarand I suggest the use of amask when you are workingthis species. A description ofthe problems caused by thistimber was in a previous issue of H & I when a countrywoodturner wrote an article on its effects on him. How-ever I digress.

Bruce Leadbeatter came toour club one day and dem-onstrated, among otherthings, a ringcutter whichenabled a flat circular pieceof wood to be cut intosmaller rings as you movedinto the centre of the wood.

The tool fits into the toolpost of the lathe (mine is aLeady) and you get a small gauge to set the tool up atthe correct angle and also the correct distance fromthe rim. You cut into the timber from the right halfwayand then from the left to part the ring off safely andcatch it on the tool to avoid spinning off the lathe. Therings are quite fragile at this stage.

The rings are then turnedover to form the shape ofa cone and sanded onboth faces and thenglued to form the shape. The size of your bowldictates the press re-quired to assemble therings to complete thegluing process. I waslucky that a fellow member of our club had a press toaccommodate my bowl which had a diameter at therim of 30cm.

After gluing has set return tothe lathe using (surprise sur-prise) another Bruce Leadyattachment, his bowl holdingchuck which does a superbjob of holding the bowl.

I also had a circular piece of board held about halfwayinto the bowl supported by the tailstock This was moreas a safety measure than anything. Light cuts thencompleted the turning process both inside and outsidebefore sanding. Polishing with 7008 finished the bowlto my satisfaction.

Any further information can be obtained regards thetools from Bruce Leady on 02 9718 5395.Please accept my apologies in advance as I amnot used to describing wood turning on paper Iwould much rather have you with me at the latheso I could show you the steps involved.

Enter “Leady Ring Cutter” into Google or anyother search engine and you will find a good arti-cle with photos on the Guild site.
