Western Sydney Stadium Project update January 2017

Overview The new Western Sydney Stadium is a 30,000 seat world class venue that will revolutionise the spectator experience.

The stadium is the first project to be delivered under the NSW Government’s $1.6 billion Stadia Strategy to improve sporting infrastructure across the state.

The new Western Sydney Stadium will:

» be able to cater for bigger crowds, provide an improved game day experience and bring major benefits to the Western Sydney economy

» generate approximately 1,200 jobs during construction and between 600 and 900 jobs once operational for sporting event days and major events

» cater for a range of sporting and community uses within the precinct.

The new stadium will be built on the existing Pirtek Stadium site in Parramatta.

Infrastructure NSW is delivering the project in partnership with Venues NSW on behalf of the NSW Government. Lendlease has been awarded the contract to design and construct the new stadium.

Planning update Stage one planning approval for the project, which covered concept proposal and demolition work, was granted in December 2016.

The second stage of planning approval for the project involves detailed design of the new stadium as well as construction and operation.

A planning application will be submitted in early 2017 and the community will be invited to comment on the design when the application is placed on public display in early 2017.

Site establishment Work to establish the construction site at Pirtek Stadium has started. It will take about three weeks to complete, weather permitting, and will include:

» removing and relocating utilities including electricity, communication, water and sewerage

» installing temporary fencing and gates

» installing temporary buildings such as site offices and employee amenities

» establishing laydown areas and stock pile sites.

Our working hours will be from:

» 7am to 6pm, Monday to Friday

» 8am to 1pm on Saturdays.

Construction vehicles will access the site via O’Connell Street.

Parking at the stadium’s north-east and western car parks will no longer be available until the new stadium is complete.

More information on the demolition and construction of the new stadium will be provided to the community before work starts.

*Construction elements are subject to Stage 2 planning approval by the Department of Planning and Environment.

Demolition work commenced last month and is

progressing well. Demolition will be completed by mid-

2017.

Highlights

• Demolition of the Western stand of the stadium is

complete.

• Demolition of the Eastern stand is due to start shortly

with staged works around the pool.

• Following the closure of the Parramatta Swimming

Centre on Friday 31 March and salvaging of some pool

equipment, pool demolition will commence in mid-April.

Public access to the Old Kings Oval and Parramatta Park

will continue to be maintained throughout the demolition

program.

Any remediation of hazardous materials such as asbestos,

will be managed by an approved Remediation Action Plan,

prepared in accordance with Environmental Protection

Authority Guidelines, and industry best practice will be

Construction

Throughout the construction of the stadium, various

mitigation measures will be in place to appropriately

manage impacts associated with the work. Appropriate

noise, vibration and air quality management plans have

been developed, approved and will be adhered to

throughout the delivery of the Project.

Some of these mitigation measures include respite

periods to be incorporated for high-impact activities,

suitable selection and positioning of plant and

equipment and training and inducting all construction

workers. Each load that enters or leaves the site will be

appropriately covered to manage any loose material and

water sprays will be constantly used to suppress dust.

A traffic management plan has been developed in

consultation with the City of Parramatta Council to

ensure the appropriate management of construction

traffic throughout the Project. Construction traffic

will not queue on O’Connell Street and it is expected

that there will be approximately 50 trucks per day

throughout the construction phase.

Following demolition, the proposed working hours for

the project will be 7am-6pm Monday to Friday and

8am-5pm Saturday.

Operations

The future stadium will be operated by Venues NSW and

will be used by multiple sporting codes including rugby

league, rugby union and football.

Security for the stadium will be managed in line with

current security standards and requirements for

events in NSW and the stadium precinct will facilitate

more contemporary crowd control and evacuation

procedures.

Pedestrian access to and from the stadium will be

managed to ensure the safety of all visitors. The map

below shows the proposed access routes from the

Parramatta CBD.

Detailed design

Artist Impression – A north eastern perspective of the new Western Sydney Stadium

Artist Impression – The River Terraces

Artist Impression – The best live sport experience in Australia

Artist Impression – An Australian stadium built from Australian steel

The stadium has been designed with a lightweight white

floating fabric roof. An iconic media mesh screen will be

located above the north east stadium entry, functioning

as a screen lit with team colours, logos and branding to

suit specific events.

A picturesque landscape of gently terracing turf and

trees will roll down to Parramatta River and will embrace

the parkland’s character, creating a large flexible green

space for informal gatherings and events for the public

to enjoy.

Additional renders are available for viewing at www.insw.com/westernsydneystadium

Inside the stadium itself, you will be able to sit within

a 360-degree continuous bowl which is built at the

steepest permissible angle, enclosing the field with

a wall of fans and sound. The roof will provide full

coverage to the seating rows and there will be a special

fabric installed to enhance acoustics and visual presence

to further maximise spectator experience. There will be

a total of 30,000 seats closer to the action than ever

seen before in Australia.

Did you know?

Last year footy fans and entertainment buffs had a once

in a lifetime chance to take home a piece of Parramatta

Stadium before the new state-of-the-art Western Sydney

Stadium is delivered. Hundreds of items from seats to

catering equipment, lockers, lighting and corporate

furniture were gifted to community sporting organisations

from as far away as Moree and Wagga Wagga to WIN

Stadium in Wollongong and McDonald Jones Stadium in

the Hunter.
