On behalf of Western Province Preparatory School, it is my great pleasure to welcome you all – players, coaches, managers and family supporters - to the 2014 Centenary Rugby Festival.

We extend a particularly warm welcome to our friends from as far afield as KwaZulu-Natal and the Eastern Cape. As always, the cluster of prep schools located here in Cape Town will demonstrate their warm hospitality by assisting with the hosting of teams from the other provinces. We are extremely grateful to them for this assistance.

Welcome to our beautiful city. Welcome too, to the warm hospitality that everyone at WPPS extends to you. We trust you will enjoy a wonderful few days of prep school rugby at its best. Perhaps we will see a glimpse of future provincial and national rugby talent? Be that as it may, what we are guaranteed to witness is a series of wonderfully competitive matches, inspiring displays of sportsmanship and memorable moments of camaraderie, both on and off the field.

2 celebrating 100 years of life and learning

Rugby at WPPSThere cannot be many schools that can

boast that its inaugural rugby team, selected from a total complement of 26,

included a boy who would later become one of the country’s early rugby icons, but the 1914 WPPS 1st XV included the later great Springbok captain, Bennie Osler – later to be joined by Kenneth Sellar, a future England player. And there were many more internationals to come.

Thornton House, near Kenilworth station, and the early home of WPPS, had no playing field, so practices were held on the nearby polo ground at Kenilworth Race Course. After the move to Mount Royal in 1918, and before the adjacent sloping field could be levelled, there was a long, and often wet trudge down to Newlands ‘B’ for all rugby activities.

Opposition in those early days was limited to Bishops, Rondebosch and Wynberg, but later, once WPPS could boast its own field and home matches were offered, Marist and Observatory became regular reciprocal opponents.

What the school lacked in rugby playing numbers in the early days, it made up for in enthusiasm, and whilst the boys had been perceived at one stage to be ‘not as fond of football as they are of cricket’, that changed with the growth of the school, and before long WPPS became a force to be reckoned with on the prep school circuit. With better coaching, more matches were being decisively won, and outstanding players - who were later to become national and international stars – emerged.

The 1939 1st XV was captained by John Keeling, later to become the second Wetpup to play for England, whilst Tommy Gentles, star scrum half of the 1944 U11 became our second Springbok – at only 65kg the smallest man ever

to have played in the green and gold. The early ‘60s produced a new crop of future Springboks in Peter Whipp and Dugald Macdonald, whose WPPS cousin Donald Macdonald went on to play for Scotland. Despite being an unmemorable year for WPPS rugby, 1969 did produce one Nick Mallett, Springbok player, and later highly successful coach – and Supersport panellist.

Mikey Kirsten, captain of the WPPS 1st XV in 1982, who went on to play a phenomenal eight seasons at scrum half for the WP Currie Cup side, was one of the early protégés of the school’s iconic U9/U10 coach Adéle Mc Naughton. Male coaches come and go, but Adéle was a fixture at that level for more than 30 years, enthusiastically imparting all those essential basic skills – something that has been gratefully acknowledged by all her subsequent stars. They include Dion O’Cuinneagain, captain of the Springbok Sevens and later captain of Ireland, Fraser Waters, centre for England in three matches, and Stuart Abbott who won nine England caps and an MBE for his role in England’s 2003 World Cup victory.

More recently Mathew Turner, Dillyn Leyds and Tim Swiel, from the 2001, 2005 and 2006 1st XVs respectively have represented their country at U20 level, and Turner also played for England in the HSBC Sevens, coming up against his Wetpups friend Roddy Grant, who captained Scotland. All show enormous promise for the future, and all would undoubtedly put much of their success down to the influence of their extraordinarily talented and enthusiastic WPPS coach, Dave Mallett. In his 15 years as coach, Dave transformed rugby at the school, producing highly motivated and talented teams of exceptional prep school standard. His is a legacy to which all future coaches will aspire.

Bishops was founded in 1849 by the first Bishop of Cape Town, Robert Gray. His vision entailed an educational environment based on Christian principles that would promote independent thinking, creating brave leaders and informed followers.

The history of Bishops rugby is a long and colourful one. The sport which developed into rugby football has its South African origins at Bishops, introduced by the then Principal, Canon George Ogilvie, who arrived from Rugby College in 1861. The green Springbok jersey comes from Bishops too – the

BishopsSA captain in 1896, Barry Heatlie, gave his team his Old Diocesan Rugby Club’s green jerseys for their test at Newlands versus the touring British team, and with SA winning their first test in history, the jersey became the SA test match jersey. Bishops has produced about 60 international rugby players, representing a host of different countries not only South Africa.

We congratulate WPPS on their 100th year, appreciative of a strong and inspiring relationship between our two schools for the past 100 years.

6 celebrating 100 years of life and learning

Established in 1910, DPHS celebrated its centenary in 2010. The school’s unique approach to best practice for boys has evolved over the decades as the result of a passionate and caring contribution from generations of teachers, staff, parents and old boys. Today, Durban Prep is a school steeped in tradition, with committed and talented educators providing quality education in impressive facilities.

While many schools encourage participation, what makes this century-old school unique is its commitment to boys’ schooling and to sport as a valuable educational tool. A core DPHS principle is that every boy should have equal access to as many learning opportunities as possible. The fun and excitement of learning at DPHS goes beyond the classroom, where a world of sporting

opportunities awaits the boys.

Regardless of ability, all boys at DPHS, from Grade 0 through to Grade 7, are encouraged to take part in a wide range of sporting activities offered at the school. A large and committed family of DPHS parents, teachers, coaches, old boys and friends of DPHS support the school in its goal of giving every boy a chance to succeed as a sportsman in his own right and as a valued member of a school team, donning their school colours with pride.

We extend our sincere good wishes to Western Province Preparatory School on this auspicious occasion, their centenary year. We are looking forward to renewing old, and forging new, friendships offered by the invitation to participate in this Centenary Festival.

Since its independence from Grey High in 1930, Grey Junior School has had rugby as its main winter sport. The rugby programme in recent years includes two or three Saturday mornings where the Grades 1 and 2 boys have a rough and tumble game against each other under the banner of peppermints and smarties. The Grades 3s as U9s are introduced to 15-a-side rugby and are included in the annual fixture list together with all the other age groups. The players show plenty of enthusiasm for the game resulting in a possible 20 teams being selected from the age group U9 through to U13. All teams are given a coach and encouraged to do their best, respecting the laws of the game as well as their opponents and to enjoy themselves by showing courage, commitment, composure and good character. The school is committed to the local league structures as well as to

Grey Junior Schoolits traditional rivals Grey Bloem, Dale, Selborne, Queens, Hudson Park, Muir, Kingswood, Woodridge, Graeme and Andrew’s. The U13A squad plan annual tours either to Cape Town or Durban, and recently accepted to play in the annual U13 Marlow Rugby Festival.

Grey Junior is extremely proud of its present Springboks Siya Kolisi (Stormers) and Jan Serfontein (Blue Bulls). Many other players, such as Sergeal Peterson, Luke Watson, Michael van Vuuren and Tim Whitehead, have gone on to represent clubs or provinces in South Africa or in other rugby playing nations of the world.

Grey Junior extends its best wishes to WPPS on the occasion of its rugby festival, and would like to thank WPPS for the invitation to this festival.

Highbury is an independent school for boys from Grade R to Grade 7, and is situated in the picturesque suburb of Hillcrest, South Africa, on a 11ha of park-like grounds. Founded in 1903, the school has a proud tradition of quality education encompassing academics, culture and sport.

Highbury caters for more than 560 boys and has dedicated and caring staff which, along with superb facilities, ensures that every boy is given the opportunity to achieve his personal best.

Highbury has a co-educational pre-primary unit, the Weavers’ Nest, which caters for 80 boys and girls in Grade 000 and Grade 00.

SPORT AT HIGHBURYEvery week, hundreds of Highbury boys take

to the sports fields representing Highbury in the sport of their choice. Whilst endeavouring to compete at the highest level, the real focus is on participation, because every boy who represents Highbury is held in equal esteem. From Foundation Phase to the First Team, they’re all school stars.

Sport at Highbury is an important dimension

of the broad scope of primary phase learning. Given that the profile of sport will operate as secondary when managed within the fuller context of the academic curriculum, our prime motivation for offering sport is to provide a learning area that will give our boys an opportunity to:• Exercise and develop their mental and

physical potential;• Participate with others within a structured

programme in order to develop recognised and acceptable social skills;

• Have fun and learn to cope within a competitive environment;

• Learn to give of their best at all times and in all situations;

• Develop certain basic skills that will encourage the boys to enhance these particular disciplines in the future;

• Have dedicated and qualified coaching staff incorporating staff members, outside coaches, resident and non-resident student coaches;

• Participate in five annual national festivals, featuring cricket, hockey, rugby, water polo and tennis;

• Enjoy state-of-the-art facilities including: four fields, a heated swimming pool, tennis courts and a fully equipped sports hall.

Merchiston Preparatory School was established on the 2nd of February 1892. The co-founders of the school were Miss Agnes Rowe and Miss Elizabeth Allan. They based their enterprises on the Merchiston Castle School in Edinburgh, Scotland.

Dr John Rogerson, Headmaster of Merchiston Castle School, also a good friend, gave them permission to use the Merchiston Castle motto, ‘Ready Aye Ready’, which is placed under the rampant lion on the badge.

Merchiston has grown from a senior primary school to encompass all facets of primary education. Also a boarding

school, the number of beds has swelled from 18 in 1892 (then exclusively a boarding school) to the present 60 beds. Currently there are 701 boys from Grade RR to Grade 7.

Merchiston has a rich rugby tradition, with Springboks such as Keith Oxlee, Jeremy Thompson and Butch James, starting their careers as Mudrats. We currently have 16 rugby teams from U9 to U13. Matt Reed runs his rugby academy at our school, with most of our top players participating in his sessions.

We are a proud rugby school, competing with all the top primary schools in KZN and in South Africa.

Rugby at Rondebosch is steeped in tradition, pride and passion with the Preparatory School currently fielding 20 teams across its various age groups. This fine tradition of rugby has seen many ex-pupils representing their country or province.

In 1904 rugby was being played on an unofficial basis at Rondebosch. By 1913, the school won the U15 and U13 competitions. From this time onwards, Rondebosch became a force in WP schools’ rugby, which has been maintained over the years. Rugby is a sport, perhaps more than any other, which caters for all shapes and sizes and which also develops the vital qualities of perseverance, courage and teamwork.

The impressive list of national rugby players produced by the school, bears testimony to the depth of association between Rondebosch and top class rugby.

Gerald Thompson, Jackie Tindall, Willie Rousseau, Jock van Niekerk, Alvi van der Merwe, John Apsey, James Starke, Mike Lawless, Ian McCallum, Eric Melvill, Roy McCallum, Chris Pope, Derek van den Berg, Joel Stransky, Dion O’Cuinneagain, Hanyani Shimange and Gcobani Bobo.

We congratulate our traditional rival WPPS on their centenary and wish them every success with this festival.

Selborne Primary is a school steeped in tradition, and is presently celebrating 143 years of academic, sporting and cultural excellence. Pupils are exposed to a broad spectrum of learning and life skills, equipping them with confidence to face the future.

The humble beginnings of Selborne Primary can be traced to Pastor Heinrich Muller in 1872 and to the Panmure School, which was started in 1865 by the Rev Wallis with OC Broedelet being the first Headmaster. In the ensuing years the school entrenched itself as a front–runner in education on the Border under a number of character-filled Headmasters. By 1930, the girls had finally all moved on to establish what was to become the Clarendon School for Girls.

The second Earl of Selborne became active in South African politics and as the High Commissioner became interested in education. The school took on the family name and thus changed to Selborne Primary. In 1971, Selborne Primary moved

Selborne Primaryto its present modern premises in Crewe Road where great leaders such as Alan Lister, Mr WA Stevens, Mr John Heather, Mr Ken Schaeffer and presently Mr Doug Voke have guided the school to great heights.

Although developing a winning culture is important, we believe it should never be at the expense of the love of the game and the spirit of true sportsmanship in which it should be played. We encourage each individual to explore and develop their own God-given talents while at all times remembering the schools motto, Palma Virtuti “reward is to the brave.

Selborne counts it a very real privilege to be a member of the South African ‘family of boys’ schools’. Long may this association continue to grow and flourish.

We congratulate WPPS on reaching an outstanding milestone in their illustrious history, and thank them for having us share the celebration.

The South African College Schools (SACS) opened its doors to boys in 1829. Situated originally in the city centre and now in Newlands, it was established as a combined junior and high school with a small university section later to become the University of Cape Town (UCT).

SACS’ proud rugby history dates back to the 1800s when Bishops and SACS engaged in their first ‘battles’ at which is now known as Newlands – the home of South African Rugby. These battles throughout the years created seasoned and modern warriors such as Dr Cecil

Moss, Frank Mellish, Peter Kirsten, Percy Montgomery, Paul Delport and Kyle Brown. These gentlemen learnt their rugby skills through the firm foundations of SACS rugby and were later able to represent their country as Springboks.

Rugby continues to be enormously popular at SACS with the school now being able to field as many as 24 league teams. The school motto, “Spectemur Agendo”, “Let us be judged by our actions”, motivates the teams to give of their very best in all inter-schools matches.

At Sweet Valley our rugby philosophy is ‘Never Give Up’, a mentality that is bolstered by our positive attitude, inclusive nature and unique team spirit. Since 1994 when rugby was introduced to the school by Mr Faure and Mr Campbell, Sweet Valley has grown in the sport, producing some sterling provincial players as well as excellent high-school stars, many of whom have captained their first sides.

From initially battling against traditional all-boys rugby schools, Sweet Valley is now one of the main contenders, regularly winning home and away matches by large margins against top Western Cape schools, and competing strongly when on tour.

The dedication, heart and passion of the coaches is what makes Sweet Valley rugby grow year on year, and with an emphasis on ruthless, running rugby, has developed and grown players from U8 level right up until U13, when they’re ready to take on senior rugby in high school (many of whom are excelling in the sport at Wynberg, SACS and Rondebosch).

Sweet ValleyOur U7s are introduced to rugby with

Tag Rugby, where they are encouraged to enjoy themselves, understand the nature of a team sport and hopefully instil in them a passion for the game. From a young age, vital skills are taught, drilled and understood, so that by senior primary level, players are well equipped to handle a touch match.

Toughness is an attitude! Being the best takes a lot of hard work, discipline and focus, but above all, it’s about having heart and wanting to WANT the victory! This is often not possible without the strong determination and passion of our dedicated rugby parents who are our strongest supporters in every way.

Success at Sweet Valley can be attributed to the coaches and players’ commitment, support and dedication, but mostly it has been through the immense rugby spirit and passion that permeates every heart and soul involved in rugby at the ‘Valley of Dreams’.

“Don’t aim for success if you want it; just do what you love and believe in, and it will come naturally.” - David Frost

Trinityhouse Preparatory was founded in Randburg in 1997 with an enrolment of 242 pupils. It has enjoyed unprecedented growth and the demand for places far outstrips those on offer.

Trinityhouse offers an holistic education, with a view to the actualisation of a pupil’s potential: in body, mind and spirit. Care is taken that the curriculum is relevant in an ever-changing world, whilst ensuring that formative values remain unchanged.

Trinityhouse functions within the normative environment of a Christian ethos. The school has no denominational

allegiance, but the mainstream teachings of Christianity are overtly taught. Bible Education is an important part of the curriculum. The children mature in a protected environment with high ideals and values.

Characteristic of preparatory school children are the attributes of an inquiring mind and a drive to learn. They are constantly encouraged to achieve and are motivated to reach their potential.

Exemplary Trinityhouse pupils are self confident, humble, industrious and determined.

Wynberg Boys’ Junior School is located in the heart of Wynberg. It is the second oldest school in South Africa, having been founded in 1841. The school started as a co-educational school for the children of freed slaves, in Glebe cottage in Wellington Road. The school had many homes in various locations in the Wynberg area until the Junior School moved into their present buildings in 1982.

Although the school is old and has many traditions from its past, it is firmly entrenched in the present and embraces

Wynberg Boys’ Junior Schoolthe new South Africa. We pride ourselves on the fact that our school population reflects the demographics of the population of the country. We believe that a school should be inclusive rather than exclusive and that children should come into contact with people from all walks of life and that the future citizens of South Africa will need to be equipped with skills for life. We are very proud of our traditions of integrity and hard work. We believe that the future of South Africa lies in the hands of the young people at school today.
