According to the California Energy Commission, “California is an agricultural cornucopia to the nation and the world. To produce, process and

store more than 200 food and fiber crops, the state's farmers consume four percent of the state's electricity.”High Electricity Costs in AgricultureIn addition to taxing the state’s power grid during peak

demand periods, electricity costs ag businesses money, with many large producers facing monthly bills of tens of thou-sands of dollars or more. The opportunity to reduce or elimi-nate these costs is extremely attractive, as are the environmen-tal sustainability benefits for businesses that rely on the soil, water and air to make a living.Golden ResourceFortunately, the Golden State is blessed with abundant

sunshine, and California leads the nation in solar power production. Between 2010 and 2015, solar energy generation increased by over 1,700 percent and renewable electricity accounted for almost 22 percent of all of the state's electric-ity generation in 2015 (source: Next10.org). With plenty of land, many agricultural businesses have been able to capital-ize on the state and federal programs that incentive solar power. More than 2,000 farms--almost 25 percent of those in

the state--have implemented solar energy systems (source: Greenbiz.com).Economic and Environmental SustainabilitySustainability doesn’t just apply to the environment,

however. Businesses need to be economically sustainable as well. “In agriculture, you’re always thinking about how to be sustainable,” Mike Faria of Faria Farms in Tipton, California. “We started thinking about solar when our electricity bills started to rise dramatically. We want to be here tomorrow.” Making Solar WorkFaria Farms installed a total of 2-megawatts of electricity

across multiple contiguous properties, taking advantage of California’s Net Energy Metering Aggregation (NEMA) to offset electricity costs for 27 metered facilities. NEMA allows customers to virtually aggregate usage frommultiple meters that are located on contiguous customer

owned or leased parcels, even if it is not tied directly to the solar energy system.“With solar energy, we are able to achieve economic and en-

vironmental sustainability at the same time,” Mike said. “We are able to reduce our operating costs and make a big dent in our carbon footprint.”Art De Hoop, owner of Holland Dairy in Hanford, Califor-

nia, agrees. With electricity bills north of $50,000 per month, “We have to be efficient in everything we do. If we’re not sustainable, we won’t be here,” he said. Holland Diary has multiple metered facilities spread across

750 acres. The company has built a 1-megawatt system that also enjoys the benefits of NEMA.Sierra Gold Nurseries in Yuba City, California, is one of the

nation’s largest producers of trees for fruit and nut growers. “Agriculture is all about efficiency and quality,” said Cliff Beumel, vice president of the company. “We deliver the highest quality trees that technology and mother nature can deliver, as efficiently as possible.”Sierra Gold built a solar energy system to cut the cost of

technology prices, and state and federal financial incentives, the return on investment (ROI) for solar energy for California ag businesses keeps getting better. In 1970, there were no commercial soil and plant testing laboratories in Idaho. Farmers applied fertilizers based upon educated guesswork. Dr. Dale Stukenholtz and his

wife Joyce saw an opportunity to build a business and started a soil and plant testing laboratory and field consulting service based in Twin Falls, Idaho. Dr. Stukenholtz had an unusually diverse background as an educator at the University of Ne-braska, an agronomist in the fertilizer industry, and a farmer, and he saw a need for more modern fertilizer recommenda-tions to produce greater yields at less cost. His clients were the growers, so he could make unbiased recommendations that maximized economic return to the farmer. After exten-sive field research, he developed these improved fertilizer recommendations that quickly became popular with growers and form the basis for nearly all fertilizer applications in the intermountain west area. Bargain interest rates may be the optimistic news for farmers this year, as both long and short term rates remain at historic lows. But while many lenders cling

mounts with ball hitches on the front and back. It works well in all types of terrains and conditions. With the front gate locked open, the driver approaches the calf and captures it in the cage by shutting the spring-loaded gate. The producer enters the pen through the open side by stepping from the ATV or UTV and moves the calf to the rear holding area where he can tag, vaccinate, weigh and even band the babies while protected from the mother

cow. When finished the producer releases the calf out the back to its mother.“Traditionally, producers have to get to the calves early

after birth otherwise it can be difficult to catch and even hang on to them, and then it can require two or more people depending on the protective behavior of the mother cow while the processing takes place,” Leo notes. “With our calf catcher unit, one person can catch calves, even if they are a week or older when they have plenty of run in them. Another benefit is the calf holder located at the back of the catcher. It not only secures the calf for processing, but works very well for pairing out, as the cow can see and smell her baby and will then easily follow to another pasture or calving barn in inclement weather. Cows will follow the calf virtually anywhere!”

Over thirty years ago Dr. Garth Sasser was a professor of Ani-mal Science at the University

of Idaho. In his research he discovered a pregnancy specific protein in the maternal bloodstream of ruminant animals that is only elevated when that animal is pregnant. He developed a test called Bio-PRYN (Pregnant-Ruminant-Yes-No) that measures the concentration of this protein in blood and can provide an extremely accurate determination of pregnancy sta-tus in cattle, goats, sheep, bison and other ruminant animals very early in gestation (28 days post breeding).A growing number of dairy and beef pro-

ducers and their veterinarians are utilizing blood-based pregnancy testing in unique ways to complement traditional pregnancy detection methods and because BioPRYN is a proven, convenient, accurate and cost-effective way to check your animals for pregnancy that eliminates subjectivity. Some progressive producers that are using embryo transfer or synchronization pro-tocols with artificial insemination will use BioPRYN as an early "open check” at 28 days post breeding to identify if the animal needs to be reintroduced to the synchro-nization program.
