Dear Westall Secondary Community, I am pleased to announce the following parents as new members of our School Council for 2018-2019. The number of nominations matched the number of vacancies, avoiding the need to run elections. Welcome to Keri-Leigh Thompson, Neena Rathore, Mania Nicholls, Vimala Padmanaban and Vee Tereva. Bertha Mhundwa and Sema Yildirim have a further year of their current tenure, and, Johnny Balalovski (President) has agreed to continue for a further 2 years. I would also like to welcome Angie Koeng and Mehdi Khedri as our 2 new Student voting members to Council. All Victorian Government Secondary Schools are now expected to have 2 voting student members as part of the Council constitution. I think this is a great initiative and I look forward to working with Angie, Mehdi, our new parents and our continuing parents, in leading and governing our great school. The first meeting of the new team is Wednesday 21st March at 4.30pm. This meeting will also be the AGM for 2017, where the 2017 Annual Report is tabled as per DET guidelines. This is a public meeting, as are all Council meetings. I hereby invite any interested school community members to attend Council meetings throughout the year. All Council meetings take place at the school on Wednesday afternoons at 4.30pm and run for about an hour. The dates of Council meetings for 2018 are: 21/2, 21/3, 2/5, 30/5, 27/6, 1/8, 5/9, 17/10, 14/11, 12/12 On Tuesday 20th March, we held our Annual Harmony Day Celebration. There are photos and reports in this newsletter and many more photos were uploaded to our School Facebook page. Clare O’Neill, Local Federal Member, was our Guest Speaker and she was truly blown away, as was I and everyone in attendance, at the talent, unity, diversity, care and harmony of all performers, our audience and our broader school community. We really do have something very special at Westall. Photos of events such as this are regularly uploaded to our school Facebook page, so I really encourage you to click “Follow” so that you see all of these great events as they are happening. Technology and Social Media plays a huge role in how we communicate so please ensure you are connected to both Facebook and our School Compass system. You should now receive an SMS via School Compass on any day your child is absent. Student reports and a range of other functions are now all on Compass. It is also essential your child has a device, some form of laptop, tablet or iPad with them, every day in every class. We have a BYO system for this, however, we can support you in selecting a device through our partnership with Edunet, if you need help or still don’t have a device for your child. Progress Reports and Parent Teacher Interviews

Teachers have been completing a variety of assessments to gauge your child’s progress this term. Their feedback will be

communicated to you via the Term 1 Progress Reports, which will be available to parents this week. Please note that the reports

will be available on Compass; printed hard copies will be not be issued.

Parent Teacher Interviews will be conducted on Tuesday, 27th March, from 4 – 6pm and 6:30 – 7:30pm. This is a great

opportunity for parents to meet their child’s teachers and to find out how he/she is really doing. These valuable conversations

make a significant contribution to maximising students’ academic performance. Compass online bookings are preferred

(instructions are included in this newsletter). If you require some assistance in making the bookings, please contact the school on

9546 3233. Interpreters can be requested alongside your online booking for appointments to see your child’s teachers.

Compass Workshops

Parents who attended the workshop offered at the school last week, were assisted to download the Compass app on their phone,

and they were shown how to log in and navigate Compass to check their child’s attendance, academic progress, to book parent-

teacher interviews, etc.

We will be offering two similar workshops on the night of Parent-Teacher Interviews, Tuesday March 27th, to ensure that more of

our families can come on board with Compass. The workshops will run at the following times: 4:30 – 5:00pm and 5:30 – 6:00pm.

Parents/guardians wishing to attend should organise parent-teacher interview appointments outside one of the two workshop

session times. Please note that iPads will be available for parents to use in these sessions.

Textbooks and BYOD

In order to make suitable progress, it is critical that students are equipped with the right textbooks and stationary. It appears that

a large number of students are still attending classes without the required items. If this is due to disorganisation on the student’s

part, please assist them in developing strong habits by employing simple strategies, such as, checking their timetable and packing

their bag the night before. If your child does not have textbooks due to financial reasons, please get in touch with their year level

coordinator, so that measures can be put in place to ensure that your child has access to material.

Similarly, students must have a BYO device to bring to their classes. Teachers in most subjects are using technology to enhance

teaching and learning, which means that students without a BYOD may miss out on certain opportunities. The school does have

netbooks that students can borrow, however, these are not always reliable. As Westall moves to using Compass a lot more,

students will be submitting work online, checking for work set by their teachers, as well as reflecting on their learning. Please note

that all BYO devices are the responsibility of the student. They must be transported in a proper carry case and secured in the

locker during break times.

It’s Not OK to be Away!

Daily school attendance is important for all children and young people to succeed in education and to ensure they don’t fall behind

both socially and developmentally. Children and young people who regularly attend school and complete Year 12, or an equivalent

qualification, have better health outcomes, better employment outcomes, and higher incomes across their lives. It is important

that children develop habits of regular attendance at an early age.

To minimize disruption to your child’s education, please make all appointments outside school hours and DO NOT book family

holidays during the school terms.

Literacy Bulletin As Westall, we have a strong focus on literacy as we firmly believe that having good literacy skills is key to having a successful life

after completing school. As part of our focus on improving literacy in the College, our teachers use ‘Explicit Direct Instruction’

when teaching our students. This method of teaching is great for our English as an Additional Language (EAL) learners, and it also

minimizes classroom management problems.

~INTERACTIVE TEACHING MAXIMISES LEARNING~ This means our teachers:

Explicitly teach the concept (the big idea) and the skills (what their students need to be able to do) within a given topic;

Make the delivery of information clear and direct;

Use student engagement norms including checking for understanding, using mini whiteboards;

Provide a routine for learning that encourages good learning habits.

One of the strategies our teachers use is T.A.P.P.L.E. This strategy makes sure that no students are able to switch off in class and

everyone is engaged in learning throughout a lesson:

Ask your son or daughter about TAPPLE and you will be surprised how much they know about how

they are being taught in school.

Senior School Report

It has been a quieter fortnight in the senior school as students focus on the core learning in their subjects. The early chaos of

getting to know each other in our classes, establishing classroom routines, and discovering our own strengths in subjects, is

starting to give way to students focusing on school assessed coursework.

All students, regardless of their program, will encounter challenges as they travel through the year. It is not a lack of challenge,

that defines “good students”. Students who only work to a level where there is no challenge, are not working to their true

potential. Challenge and stress has a place in learning. It activates us to do more, to be more focused, to demand more of

ourselves. It is when the stress level becomes unmanageable, that it impacts on learning in a negative way. VCAL students often

experience this as a result of having to meet the expectations and needs of many different organisations. VCE students often get

absorbed by the score, often overlooking how much learning has occurred.

The school community provides and supports students to discover and improve their learning behaviours. The iCreate study

program is an opportunity for students to seek additional support. Owning their learning journey is important. Students need to be

the owners of their learning and manage their time effectively. A small group of students have signed up for support by the Access

Monash University Mentoring Program, and have met their student mentors in the past fortnight.

Last week was international sleep awareness day. Sleep research shows that a teenager needs between 9 and 10 hours of sleep

every night. Yet, most teens are sleeping only about 7 or 8 hours a night, on average. Chronic sleep deprivation can lead to

reduced alertness and concentration, poorer academic performance and feelings of sadness and irritability.

Below you will find a copy of an activity that a small group of senior students attended, and at which, Muniat Ali was one of the key

speakers. We congratulate her, on what was both a great honour, but also, a challenge. Well done, Muniat!

Middle School Report

Year 9 English Excursion

Year 9 English students recently visited the Victoria Market and surrounding areas of the city. We have been reading ‘Market Blues’

in class and the story is set in this part of Melbourne. At the Market, we found Bateman’s obelisk and read about the contribution

he made to establishing the city of Melbourne. We found and tasted foods from different cultures, including Vietnamese and

Greek food. We also visited Flagstaff Gardens and found the ‘flagstaff’, which was used more than a century ago, to hoist flags to

inform people when ships arrived or departed the port of Melbourne. The high buildings in the area make it hard to believe that

this used to be the highest point in Melbourne back then! Apart from having an enjoyable lunch in China Town, we also paid a visit

to Parliament House and the Princess Theatre. Sam, the protagonist of ‘Market Blues’, had interesting experiences at all these well-

known landmarks in Melbourne. We considered attempting to time-travel in the same way as Sam does in the story, but no one

brought a trumpet along to play at Bateman’s Obelisk! 6.

Message from Director of Learning - Middle School: Mr. Tom Tahos

As we approach the last few weeks of Term One, I would like to take this opportunity to remind all Year 9 and 10 students about

the following:

iRead Program- all students are expected to bring reading material that is school appropriate, to their Period Four classes (not

iCreate). Students will be involved in silent reading for 15 minutes. The idea is to bring in reading material that you are

interested in.

School uniform- if you are not in correct school uniform, the classroom teacher will send you to the general office. You will

only return to class if you have a note or are in correct uniform. You will also be issued with a note which specifies the non-

uniform item. You will have to get it signed by your parents/guardians, and you are expected to report to the Middle School

Office the following morning, in correct uniform. If this does not happen then you accept to attend an afterschool detention.

BYOD- please make sure that your electronic device is charged and that you bring it to every class in a proper carry case.

Work Experience- Year 10 students need to have finalised their work placement and return paperwork that is accurately

completed and signed.

Care for your learning- students involved in extra-curricular activities and/or leadership roles, must keep up to date with their

class work. Some students are failing to submit vital pieces of work, which may result in students not meeting the standard.

Some students will need to meet with key staff to discuss their participation in these leadership and extra-curricular programs.

The Middle School would like to wish Ms Linda La and her husband all the best with their upcoming addition to their family. Ms

Loan Luong-Nguyen will be replacing Ms La as the Year 10 Coordinator. Ms Luong-Nguyen can be contacted on

Miss Sian Moore

I am a new Global Literacy teacher here at Westall Sec-

ondary College. Everyone has been extremely welcoming

and friendly during my first term here. Before joining

Westall, I completed a Master of Teaching and Bachelor

of International Relations, with a focus in History and

Politics. Before embarking on my Masters degree, I spent

a year teaching English in rural Spain. In my spare time, I

like to read and enjoy going to the cinema. I also have a

passion for travel and experiencing different cultures. I

am currently looking forward to my next holiday in Hong

Kong and Taiwan!

Miss Meg Wrench Joseph

Hi, my name is Meg Wrench Joseph and this is my first

year as a PE and Science teacher at Westall. I graduated

from Deakin University in 2016 with a Bachelor of

Health and Physical Education. In my spare time, I enjoy

being active and spending time with family and friends.

The past 7 weeks have flown by already and I have

really enjoyed getting to know the students at Westall,

and I am looking forward to the year ahead.

Summer Camp at Monash University

Congratulations to our Year 10 student, Michael Ung, who was invited to participate in the digIT program organised by Australian

Mathematics Trust. Michael attended the summer residential camp at Monash University on 12 January 2018, together with 57

Victorian and Tasmanian high school students, to immerse themselves in Information and Communication Technology (ICT).

digIT is an invitational program. Students are invited based on their performance in the Australian Mathematics Competition.

While at camp, students participated in practical tutorials that broadened their skills in coding and robotics. They also participated

in seminars on algorithmic and computational thinking, and received motivational talks delivered by ICT experts.

Michael had a lot of fun over the five days developing his ICT skills through interactive workshop sessions, guest lectures and field

trips. He left enthusiastic and eager to return for the winter residential camp in the July school holidays. Meanwhile, Michael is

receiving a six-month mentoring program, giving him the opportunity to connect with a successful ICT professional, who will work

with him to establish his personal goals.

Report from Michael Ung I arrived at Mannix College to participate in the digIT camp. The camp was all based around technology and coding and the camp

lasted for five days, starting from the 12th to the 16th January. I was one of the 60 students in Australia who attended digIT,

joining students from different schools in Victoria and interstate, as a result of our performance in the Australian Mathematics

Competition. On the first day of the digIT camp, I said my goodbyes and headed inside Mannix College. My first thought was that I

probably won’t make any friends here, but overall, I befriended six people on the first day. Nobody at the camp knew anybody and

everyone was anti-social at first, we were told to take a seat on any tables, I sat at the far back corner with three other people who

eventually became friends of mine. I got along with the people I sat with and after that, we were escorted to our dormitories. I was

given the largest room, which was awesome. We visited the CSIRO campus to find out a bit about what they do. We participated in

group activities to solve a range of mathematical questions. A guest speaker spoke to us after dinner. The next day, after breakfast,

we learnt about algorithms and different ways to solve Math equations. We participated in multiple workshops, including Games,

Python (programming language), HTML coding and Robotics. We listened to Professor Andrew Turpin as well. The workshops

event lasted the entire day, from 8:30 am to 5:30 pm, it was exhausting. Sam Kingsley spoke to us on the topic of Robotics. He

brought in a robot called ‘NAO’, who was quite hysterical. On the fourth day, we were given the choice to participate in any of the

workshops for the final time. I went to the website workshop. Following this, we met with our mentors, who would help us with

our projects that we have to present in July for the digIT winter camp. We then returned to Mannix College and had our dinner

party, which was fun. On the fifth and last day, we went on an excursion to RMIT, in the Melbourne CBD. This was also where our

parents picked us up. Overall, the digIT camp experience was amazing, and I met a lot of intellectual people. I would highly recom-

mend attending this camp if you have an interest in coding and technology.

In the junior years at Westall Secondary College, students study a broad range of subjects to assist them in working out their

passions and interests. Most subjects are studied for the entire year, however those denoted with an asterix are subjects that

run for just one semester. In Semester 2, the students will also have the opportunity to study Food Technology, Art, Dance and

Drama. When students get to Year 9, they will be able to choose one additional elective, as well as an iCreate subject.

Junior School News

Message from the Director of Learning Junior School: Ms. Alice Paget

What a great start to the year it has been in the Junior School. The Year 7 students have had a very smooth transition into the

beginning of their high school experience and are starting to settle into their new routines with ease.

A few reminders:

Your child needs to bring a book of their choice to every Period 1 and 2 class for the iRead program. The school library is open

before school, recess, lunchtime and afterschool for borrowing, or, students can go to the community library at the Westall

Hub (directly behind the school).

Please inform the school if your child is going to be away, by either emailing the coordinator, calling the school or sending a

written note with your child on their return to school.

Please continue to check your child’s diary and ensure they are keeping on top of any homework. I encourage all students to

attend Homework Club, it runs weekly on a Monday night in the ALC from 3:30pm-4:30pm. Tutors from Monash University are

available to assist students with all subjects.

Breakfast Club also runs every Tuesday and Friday morning in the Balook Centre from 8am, this is a great opportunity for

students to have a happy and healthy start to the day.

Recess does not commence until 11:30am. Students are welcome to bring a water bottle into class and a healthy snack to

ensure they can stay focussed until the first break.

Junior School Team We are very excited to welcome a new team into the Junior School for 2018. Over the upcoming Semester, we will introduce you

to the wonderful team of teachers in the Junior School.

Hi! My name is Michelle Collins and I am teaching English and Global Literacy in the junior school in 2018. I have lived

in Melbourne my whole life, but, I have spent a lot of time travelling all over the world, as I enjoy exploring new

places and learning about different cultures. Some of my other hobbies include tennis, hiking, and photography.

I am looking forward to being a part of the Westall community this year.

My name is Anna Papagiannopoulos, and I teach English at Years 7-10 at Westall Secondary College. In my spare

time, I love to read, watch television, and take my dog for long walks. This year, I'm looking forward to getting to

know the fantastic students at Westall Secondary College and learning as much from them as they will from me.

Art Elective

Recently, the students in Art class had the opportunity to print images which they designed on computer. In the process, the

students learnt a few techniques, including, reversing images or text on computer before printing their images onto transfer paper.

The students were then taught the stages of printing, including the transfer of images onto T-shirts, using an iron. They were eager

to peel off the backing paper and view their prints after ironing on their images.

The students were proud of their prints and looked forward to wearing their T-shirts.

Overall, the class thoroughly enjoyed the process of T-shirt printing and would do it again if given the opportunity.

Message from the WELC Coordinator: Mrs. Carmela Santucci

Meet the Parents Night On Tuesday 27th February, we held the Meet the Parents Evening for our new Year 7 parents, students and teachers. This even-ing was held to celebrate the smooth transition of our students from primary to secondary school. It gave our parents a great

opportunity to see what our students have been learning, meet their current teachers and see some of the classrooms in which the students learn. It was great to see all the families interacting on the night and getting involved with the Westall community. A very big than you to the VET Hospitality students who cooked and served the catering for the evening.

The students in the Language Centre have worked very hard this term to improve their English Language skills. It is always pleasing

to hear the students begin to speak English amongst themselves. This is a positive behaviour when learning a new language.

Our Parent/Teacher interviews were held on the 1st of March. The evening was well attended by parents, guardians and Interna-

tional School Coordinators. The Language Centre’s communication with families is vital in assisting students’ progress.

At the end of this term, some students will leave the Language Centre and begin their studies in a mainstream school. In prepara-

tion for transition to mainstream school, students have been attending classes that help them to understand what it will be like in

a mainstream school setting. Topics covered included uniform, being prepared for class, and what VCE is all about.

To all our students taking the next step and moving on from the Language Centre, we wish you success in your future studies.

Victorian International School Student Welcome Reception 2018 On Wednesday 20th March, 5 students from WELC attended the Victorian International School Student Welcome Reception 2018, at Government House. The Governor of Victoria, The Hon. Linda Dessau, welcomed the audience, and the Parliamentary Secretary for Education, Ms Judith Graley, also gave an address. WELC Group 1 PowerPoint Presentations

On Tuesday 13th and Wednesday 14th March, Group 1 students presented a PowerPoint on ‘Water

Safety’to Year 7 and Year 8 EAL classes in the College .

The summative assessment task, required students to work in groups of 5 and create a PowerPoint

presentation informing their audience about beach safety and how to stay safe around water. The

students worked collaboratively to complete and practise their presentations before delivering them.

This task followed last month’s WELC excursion to Bonbeach, where students participated in the Surf

Life Saving Victoria Multicultural Water Safety Program, that teaches students the importance of

being safe around water.

The feedback that the Year 7 and 8 students gave to the groups that presented, was useful. It pointed

out their strengths, such as the ability to engage their audience and the use of humour, and areas of

Improvement, such as pronunciation. This feedback boosted their confidence with their spoken English.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Year 7 and Year 8 EAL students and their teachers, for

giving up their time and allowing the Group 1 students to deliver their presentations. Last but not least,

I would like to congratulate Group 1 students for their informative presentations and confident

deliveries. A great effort everyone!

Harmony Day Celebrations at Westall On Tuesday 20th March, Westall English Language Centre, along with Westall Secondary College, celebrated Harmony Day. The whole school came together to celebrate the school’s diversity and the importance of belonging to our community. Hosted by our Middle School Captains, the Harmony Day Assembly, was a huge success. The event included of a number of staff

and student performances, from different cultures around the world, including Vietnam, China, Korea, The Cook Islands,

Cambodia, The Middle East and Burma.

The students sang, danced, play instruments, displayed their cultural dress and spoke with pride and respect. We were very lucky

to also have Principal, Tristan Lanarus, and the College Captains, Mona Issa and Shannon Bone, speak about the importance of

cultural diversity, tolerance and acceptance. These values were reinforced by our very special guest, the Honourable Clare O’Neil,

who spoke about the amazing students and community at Westall Secondary College, and how impressed she was by the standard

they displayed. The assembly is a true testament to the amazing students and staff who are Westall Secondary College, many who

sacrificed may hours to rehearse their performances.

WSC Swimming Carnival—Friday, 9th March 2018

Paterson Enjoy Their Time in the Sun

On Friday 9th March, a beautiful sunny day, the whole school participated in the Westall House Swimming Carnival at the Noble

Park Aquatic Centre. No one knew what surprises were to come, and after an indifferent start with a few games and activities run

by the pool as a warmup, we were into the real deal. There wasn’t much that Dennis, Gordon or Lawson could do to stop the

barrage that unfolded. Maruyah in Year 7 did her best for Gordon taking out the 50m Freestyle and Breast stroke. For Dennis, Tun

and Alexandros from Year 7, tried their best, both winning a 50m race and competing hard for the day. Charlie from Year 11, won

the 50m Backstroke and came runner up in the Freestyle. For Lawson, it was the house captain, Tynan, who won the 50m Breast-

stroke and Aaliyah, the 50m Freestyle, giving it their best to inspire their house. However, there was no stopping a relentless

Paterson this year.

Having not featured very highly in the past few years, it didn’t matter where you looked there was quality across the board for

Paterson. In Year 7, Oliver dominated the Backstroke and Breaststroke. In Year 8, Gabby, took a chance to share any glory taking

out all four strokes. For the Year 9s, Connor flexed his muscles and took out the 50m Freestyle and Backstroke, also supported by a

quality teammate in Kenneth, who won the Butterfly and cam runner up in 2 other events. Then Tamika from Year 10, chipped in

with a great win in the 50m Breaststroke and runner up in the Freestyle. Lastly, the senior students really rubbed it in with Jason

putting on some of the most impressive performances we have ever seen at Westall, winning an effortless 50m Butterfly and Free-

style. For the senior females, Winnie crushed her competitors in the 50m Backstroke and Butterfly.

It was Paterson’s year this year and there was going to be no leaving it to chance. Congratulations to Paterson, who broke a 6-year

drought, scoring the most dominant victory we have seen in a long time, almost scoring double the points of the other houses. The

final scores were Paterson 827, Lawson 457, Dennis 423 and Gordon 289. Thanks to everyone for supporting such a great day.

Lost Your Device?

At Westall Secondary College, all students are encouraged to secure their valuable items in their lockers when not in use in the

classroom. However, students can sometimes misplace their devices including iPads, iPhone, iPod etc. Westall Secondary College

does not hold any responsibility regarding students missing their devices, however, Westall Secondary College recommends

parents/guardians to remind their child that it is their responsibility to keep track of their own belongings at all times.

Listed below are methods by which students can re-locate their devices if lost.

Firstly, set up ‘Find My iPhone’ on all of your devices

1. Start at your Home screen.

2. Tap Settings > [your name] > iCloud. If you are using iOS 10.2 or earlier, go to Settings > iCloud.

3. Scroll to the bottom and tap ‘Find My iPhone’.

4. Slide to turn on ‘Fin My iPhone’ and Send Last Location.

If your device is lost or stolen

1. Sign in to icloud.com/find on a PC or use ‘Find My iPhone’ app on another iPhone or iPad.

2. Select a device to view its location on a map. If the device is nearby, you can have it play a sound to help you or someone

nearby find it.

3. Turn on Lost Mode – you can lock your device with a passcode, display a message with your phone number on your missing

device.

It is also very important that if a device is lost that the student sees their coordinator immediately and check lost property

(Reception) to see if it has been handed in.

If ‘Find My iPhone’ is not enabled on your device before it goes missing, there are no other Apple services to track your device.

iCreate STEM On Wednesday 14th March, our STEM iCreate class went to Quantum Victoria to play with Lego EV3 Robots. We had many challenges, such as coding and programming the robots to stop exactly on the line. We measured the wheel rotations and were given multiple missions to work on, if it was out of space.
