VIRTUAL SCHOOL VS REMOTE
bull Virtual school is a rigorous online learning environment where students participate in all elements of course work in a self-paced format (not in real time)
bull While there is some flexibility in the studentrsquos daily schedule a successful virtual student is one who is highly-motivated works independently and follows a daily structured schedule established by the student and parentguardian
bull Remote Learning is taught by the Hancock County classroom teacher at the local school in the event of a school closure
bull Remote learning is used to supplement the normal educational instruction of a traditional classroom during times of closure
HOW DOES VIRTUAL SCHOOL WORK
bull Students are enrolled in the online courses taught by highly qualified licensed teachers using the WV learning standards
bull Hancock County Schools will be utilizing the West Virginia WV Learns platform for grades K-8 and the Ed Options platform for grades 9-12
bull Our local virtual school coordinator Kasey Arnott will work with school designees to monitor the studentsrsquo progress and will communicate with the studentand or parentguardian by e-mail phone or video conferencing The coordinator will serve as a liaison for the students between school of record as well as between the student and the virtual platform provider and virtual teachers
bull Our Hancock County virtual coordinator is the local point of contact for school management issues and progress monitoring while the virtual teachers are available online to assist students with specific classcontent related questions assignments etc
bull Students in grades K-5 will meet once a week on TEAMS with their teacher to discuss any concerns
WHAT DOES A VIRTUAL CLASS LOOK LIKE
bull Virtual courses are primarily text-based meaning students read the content (curriculum) online complete and submit assignments electronically and virtually take quizzes and tests in the online platform often in a video conferencing format with the school designee
bull Younger students may see more interaction in the form of videos and interactive activities however parentguardian support at home is required
bull Virtual coursework is rigorous and highly independent which can make it easy for students to fall behind or become overwhelmed
bull The most successful students follow a daily structured routine and have a strong support system at home
bull The responsibility of learning the material falls upon the student and the parentguardian
bull Virtual school students should be self-advocates for their own education
