The Ned show By : Mikayla Harney

On April 4, 2016 the famous NED show came to Orchard View! Many were puzzled when

they learned the Ned show host’s name was David and NED was a cardboard cutout.

David taught us about doing the right thing and exceeding our goals. We all know right

from wrong, I presume, at least most of us and we all want to achieve our goals so why

were we gathered in a gymnasium to be lectured? Well, it wasn't a long draw-out speech.

Instead it was a vivacious, fun, easy to understand, comical, story with an important

message and yo-yos. NED isn't just a 5 foot cardboard guy, his name is probably the most important part of the

whole show. NED stands for:

Never Give Up

Encourage Others

Do Your Best

The yo-yo was a good example of some of the things David talked about. For example, he mentioned complements.

When you dish them out, there’s a 95% chance they are going to come right back at you. For the rest of the week

the school sold various kinds of yo-yos such as the “NED yo”, “The Boomerang”, and the

“Cosmic Spin” to fund the NED show so they could continue to go on to inspire and boost

the morale of other citizens. I believe the NED show brought out the effulgence in all of

us!

Pie in the Face — By Kayla Shirey This years pie in the face was one of the funniest activities we’ve had all year! Many

students and staff raised money for Jump Rope for Heart and as a “reward” for their

efforts, they had an opportunity to throw a pie in the face of a teacher or administrator.

This year’s top money-raisers were Cammie Hodges, Cloe Thomas, and Lucy Hinkle. The Parent-Teacher Associa-

tion provided the whipped cream pies to throw and our cafeteria staff provided the teachers and administrators

with some plastic “aprons” (if they chose to wear them). Students and staff that raised at least $50 for Jump Rope

for Heart were called up to stand at a line to throw a whipped cream pie at whichever teacher or administrator they

chose. Some missed, but others hit square in the face. Either way, they still had fun! The teachers then had a

whip cream throwing battle that caused a very sticky mess. Thanks to the PTA, the cafeteria staff, the custodial

staff for cleaning up afterwards, and everyone who raised money for the Jump Rope for Hear!

Nature walk and look at

trees and a creek. Then

we went in the creek to

look for macroinverte-

brates” (which are living

creatures large enough to

be seen with the unaided

eye but have no back-

bone), said Dakota Huff-

man of Mrs. Nie-

wodowski’s fourth grade

class.

This month, the fourth

grade students got to ex-

plore the outdoors as they

went to The Poorhouse

Farm for their field trip for

the Watershed Program.

“It was fun and exciting,”

said Alix Lewis about the

day. He and Dakota Huff-

man described the events

that they got to do at the

farm. “We went on a

Alix Lewis, also of Mrs. Nie-

wodowski’s class, found a

stone fly and a may fly. He

and the other students also

got to plant a tree and name

them. Students got to test

the water quality, make “fish

fossils” out of paint, and

learn to identify different

types of trees. Thankfully,

the weather cooperated and

Everyone got to enjoy their

day at

the farm.

Science Fair

Volume I, Issue 4 Page 3

The County Science Fair was held on February 20, 2016 at Martinsburg High School.

The following OVI students had advanced to the County Science Fair from the one at

OVI: Leila Grace Sergent, Mary Kate McCune, Lily Campbell, Trinity Jenkins, Rylee

DeLeon, and Aden Reid. Several OVI students won awards for their amazing pro-

jects. Leila Grace Sergent received a First Place award in the Behavioral Science

category for her project entitled “Are screens effecting your shut-eye?”. Mary Kate

McCune won Second Place in the same category for her project

on “The Power of Music” as she determined how music affects

people’s heartrates. Lily Campbell received Second Place in

the Environmental Science category for her project that in-

volved obtaining energy from garbage. Congratulations to all

of the Science Fair participants! Way to go with representing

Orchard View in a fantastic way!

Earth Day — By Carlene Kensbock April 22nd is the day that is recognized as Earth Day. Earth

day is where you celebrate earth. You can do that by recy-

cling, cutting down on paper, and conserving water and energy

by taking shorter showers and turning off lights when you

don’t need them. It’s not that hard. All you do is take care of

the earth. So what can YOU do to take care of the earth?

Make a recycle group to recycle trash. Here are some other

ideas to make every day earth day: You can make a quick les-

son in recycling, make earth day crafts by using recycled

items, use reusable, washable containers for your lunch in-

stead of plastic bags and plastic wrap, complete earth day puz-

zles, play earth day games, get teachers ideas, plant a tree, count down to earth day,

celebrate peace on earth day, or make an earth day pledge. Like I told you it’s not that hard. Do you like earth as

much me? as me?

Student Council — By Rachel Wangerin Grab your pencils and paper, because it’s time to do some math! Get ready for the Math-a-thon! You’ll receive a book-

let of problems and for each problem you do all of your sponsors donate some money! Do you ever think “How can I

make a difference in someone’s life?” Here is your chance! All the money will be donated to help a child at St. Jude’s

Children’s Hospital. So start preparing! The Math-a-thon will take place April 18th-29th. So be sure to participate in

the questions on WOVI. If you want to help a child in need you won’t want to miss the Math-a-thon.

National Child Abuse

Awareness Month

April is national child abuse awareness month.

In honor of this, we recognize a local organization that

supports the children in our county, CASA. CASA

stands for Court Appointed Special Advocates. CASA is

operated by specially trained volunteers, known as ad-

vocates. An advocate is a person who publicly supports

or recommends a particular cause or policy. CASA was

made for children who are abused and/or neglected.

CASA is an agency in which they provide Advocates to

children for their case so that the children do not get

lost in the court or social services system. The volun-

teers advocate for what is in the best interest of the

child and remain in contact with the child until the case

is closed and the child is in a safe environment. CASA

operates and provides these services through corporate

sponsors, grants, and donations. If your are in the giv-

ing mood, you should give to CASA and help support

services to our local children.
