Sept. 11, 2001, began like any normalday in our lives. My son, Eric, a teacher atMadison Elementary School, left the houseearly, leaving me to sit down to a cup ofcoffee and the morning news on TV. Bynine oclock, what I was seeing and hear-ing terrified me beyond all of what I havelived through these past 80-some years.

Ive endured the Great Depression, and I remember where I was when I heardabout Pearl Harbor and Kennedy beingshot. But this attack hit close to home.

My son, Steve, was manager of theEmbassy Suites Hotel located right acrossthe street from the World Trade Center. That morning, as usual, he had taken thesubway from Trump Place to the WTC sta-tion. Because Steve might be involved indanger somehow, I began to call his wife,Cris, and although I tried all day I couldnot get thru to her, as phone lines wereout.

At times like this you want to help, butthere is very little you can do. However, prayer lines never go down, and I sure dida lot of that!

Finally, late in the afternoon, Steve hadreached home, white from head-to-toe

from the dusty powder that had raineddown on him as he helped evacuate guestsfleeing the hotel. As it turned out, the hotelhad been extensively damaged and wouldnot reopen until two years later.

Cris eventually called when she wasable to with the wonderful news that Stevewas OK, but she warned me that he didnot want to talk about any of the events ofthat day. Several people he knew had beenkilled.

For his actions that day, EmbassySuites honored Steve with a beautifulgreen marble plaque with inscription.

While I am sure he appreciated thethoughtfulness, Steve did not want any-thing on his desk or wall to remind himof that terrible day, so he gave the plaqueto me. I have it proudly on display in myhome.

I am so thankful that all went wellfor Steve, and I continue to pray for thethousands of families not so fortunate tohave had the favorable outcome as did ourfamily.

    3/8

hat morning, so we fixedreakfast and sat back toatch.

Matt and Katie werealking about the weddinghen suddenly they said

a plane has flown into onef the towers of the Tradeenter. Pictures showed

he tower and flames andveryone was stunned and

ondering how that couldave happened. It wasard to see and harder toelieve.

As we watched and lis-ened we saw another planeoming toward the towersnd then just flew rightnto it. We just couldntelieve what was happen-

ng. We had all thoughthe first plane must havead some problems andouldnt control where theyere going but when the

econd one hit, it was likeow could that have hap-ened? Complete shock,

ear and unbelief set in.The cameras then went

o the ground, showedeople running in fear, souch dust and debris, just

till hard to picture andnderstand. We couldnt

eave the TV, we were sup-osed to check out at 11.m. but never moved fromhe TV until finally aroundp.m. Everyone in the

    ampground stayed.Then we heard there

as another plane thatit the Pentagon in.C. and one crashed

n Pennsylvania. Thelane that went down inennsylvania was a Unitedirline plane. Clydesoungest brother Bob fliesor United and we didntnow if he was flying thatay or not. All phone callso him and his family wentnanswered. That eveninge found out he was flying,ut that it wasnt him. Weere so thankful for that

nd still so sad for every-ne who died.

Clydes daughter lives in.C. We were finally able

o get her on the phonend they were all in shockut safe at home. It wasood hearing her voice andnowing they were OK.

We finally decided wehould head home so weeft and it was such an eerieide. It was a beautifulay, but the stillness in their was deafening. Silence

    verywhere. Traffic on

he highways was next toothing and what was outhere wasnt driving fast atll. There were no birds orlanes in the sky, no cloudsothing but a beautiful sunnd brilliant blue sky.

    We also didnt have

much to say, had the radioon and just listened inunbelief. When we arrivedhome we parked the rigand truck and came rightin and turned on the TV.Still cant believe what hap-pened, so many killed, and

    WHY????We finally got a phone

call from Bob, he had beenflying that day but was thensitting in an airport. They

were all told to get out ofthe air until further notice. He was going to rent a carand drive home.

It was a day we willnever forget. I can still seeit all in my mind, how verysad a day it was.

    SHOULDNT WE

    LOWER THE FLAG TO

    HALF STAFF

    ByWILLIAMZAMROWSKI

    Manistee

Sept. 11, 2001, beganas a beautifully clear, earlyautumn day. The studentsat Manistee Catholic weregetting into the swing ofa new school year and

beginning to think aboutHomecoming. I was justfinishing up my math les-son with my sixth gradestudents when we got wordthat a plane had crashedinto one of the WorldTrade Center Buildings.First reports said that itmight have been a smallprivate plane.

By the time recessrolled around the secondplane had hit the secondtower and the Pentagonand it was now clear thatthe United States wasunder attack. TVs beganto be turned on and somestaff and students watchedthe developments. We allhad a feeling of helpless-ness and wondered what

    would happen next.Fortunately, the schools

chaplain, Fr. James Bearrs, was in the building. It wasdecided to gather the stu-dents in the stadium to tellthem what was known, toreassure them, and mostimportantly to pray for the

victims and our country. Aswe were returning to theschool I was struck by howquiet the students were.Hardly anyone said a word.It was that somber quiet-ness that made me aware

that all the students under-stood what was happening. When we returned to

class one of my studentssaid, Shouldnt we lowerthe flag to half staff forthose who just died? Ittook a young person to

remind us to honor thosewho had just died.

    WE WAITED AND

    WATCHED IN

    DISBELIEF

    ByPHIL ANDBONNIE KARASH

    Wellston

My husband and I had aflight out of Grand Rapidsat 10:30 a.m. for California.

For some reason wedecided to leave early inthe morning instead ofgoing the night before andstaying in a motel closerto airport so we wouldnthave to worry about gettingthere on time.

Anyway, we left home(we live in Wellston) prob-ably around 6 a.m. anddid not encounter any dif-

ficulties on the way, so wearrived at the airport short-ly after 8 a.m. We got intothe line for the registrationdesk, as this was before youcould print your boardingpass at home, and it movedslowly forward.

When we were aboutfourth in line things sloweddown, but we still inchedto the front of the line. Weheard people coming intothe line murmuring aboutsomething that they hadseen on TV before they lefthome but we didnt reallypay that much attention aseveryone was very calm, even the people behind theregistration desk didntshow any need for concernother than that they keptleaving the desk and goinginto a room and reappear-ing every few minutes, stillsaying nothing to peoplein line.

Finally the couple infront of us were checkedin and after a brief wait forthe OK to board, the lady

    behind the desk said there

may be a delay in the flightbut sent them on to thegate. We were now waitingto be checked in and things

were really beginning toseem a little strange whenshe said there would be noflight leaving for California.

I dont know what wethought as they gave noinformation. I guess wethought they were havingplane problems or some-thing. We were told wecould come back the nextmorning and reschedule

our flight, so we left. As wewere leaving the airport Isuggested we get a roomon 28th Street close by so

we could return early thenext morning. So we did,and commenced to bringour bags to the room and

decided to get breakfast ata restaurant nearby andmaybe do some shoppingsince we had a day to just

browse around. We went to the restau-

rant and were seated andwaiting for our waitresswhen on the TV up abovethe second plane hit thetwin towers. We waitedand watched in disbelieffor a few minutes and thenlooked at each other andsaid lets go home, we aregoing nowhere.

We were in shock aswas everyone else at therestaurant. All I wanted

was to get home and leteveryone know we were stillon the ground and OK. We

went back to the motel andgathered up our belongingsand headed out. We did nothave a cell phone, so no one

at home knew if we werein the air or not. I noticedon the drive home all of thegas stations had long linesforming, which I didntunderstand why. It was a

very emotional time. Whenwe got home and realizedthat all of the flights in theair at the time were orderedto land wherever the near-est airport was and there

were no flights for a fewdays. We watched, as every-one did, the horrible eventsunfolding and thanked Godthat we were safe and notstranded in some strangecity.

We waited for abouta month before bookinganother flight to Californiaand it was eerie arriving atLAX and seeing all of thesecurity people with theirguns ready for anythingthat looked out of the ordi-nary.

We will never for-get where we were on9/11/2001.

    THE PEOPLE OF

    IRELAND

    WERE IN DEEP

    MOURNING

    ByELMIRA SMITHE

    Manistee

We were traveling inIreland. Our travel plans

were changed when wewere told by a telephonecall that my 97-year-oldmother was failing rapidly.

We decided not to goto other areas of Ireland

    but return to the Shannon

Airport area.We were in a lovely

hotel with a restaurantand a pub. It had a beauti-ful natural creek runningthrough it.

    After a pleasant day of

touring, we returned to thehotel. We went to the res-taurant area, but strangely,

we noticed no one was inthe restaurant. Lookingfurther, we noticed thateveryone was in the pub

    watching TV.As we approached the

pub someone met us andsaid: Are you from theUnited States? We will get

you a chair. We sat downonly to be shocked at what

we saw on the TV. My hus-band said Is this for realor is this something fromHollywood?

As we watched, and thedetails were revealed tous, deep concern startedto sit in as our son at thetime was shuttling betweenBoston and California. Theflight number and airline

was the one he used. It was

impossible to make anyphone calls because of the9/11 situation. Later, welearned that he couldnt geton the flight because all ofthe seats were filled.

After we received wordthat my mother had died,

we went to the airport tocheck on flights. We weretold that they didnt know

when there would be anyflights. The planes were onthe way to Newfoundland

with food, water and blan-kets for the people who had

been diverted there becauseof the 9-11 attack.

We checked anotherday, only to be told that theIrish airlines didnt meetthe new U.S. standards toland in the USA.

The people of Irelandwere in deep mourningbecause so many of thepolicemen and firemen

were of Irish descent.Wherever we went therewere sprays of flowerswith condolence signaturebooks. Many churches hadmemorial services. Cars

were lined up along thenarrow roads for miles.

It was five days beforewe could get a flight. Wefinally landed at Chicago

OHare and drove for fivehours to my mothersfuneral. We could certainlyfeel with our own loss thepain and mourning of thoselost on 9/11 and the impactit had on our country andIreland.

8, 2001. While shoppingfor a wedding dress, Isigned up for a honeymoonpackage and actually won athree-day stay at a locationof our choice. We choseMyrtle Beach. Neither of ushad been there before.

We flew out of Flint air-port the morning of Sept.9. Spent half the day travel-ing, picked up our rentalcar (a convertible!) and off

    we went to the hotel.

We enjoyed a relaxingevening, walking on thebeach, watching the sunset.Woke up Tuesday, Sept. 11,discussing what attractions

we were going to visit thatday. As my husband show-ered, I received a phonecall from our friend/baby-sitter. She said, Beth, are

you watching the news?Of course I wasnt watch-ing the news -- I was on myhoneymoon!

Kris said, we are underattack, Todds unit hasalready called the house

looking for him. You see,my husband was in the AirNational Guard at the time.

He had already put in near-ly 20 years of active andguard duty for our country. His unit, stationed out ofBattle Creek, was called up.

I turned on the newsand couldnt believe whatI saw. Needless to say,the rest of the week wasspent trying to enjoy ourhoneymoon, but 9/11 andwhat awaited our familywas always in the back ofmy mind. I couldnt stopwatching the news.

Our kids were 7(Marina), 5 (Kyle) and 5(Brandon). Todd contactedthe base, explained thatwe couldnt get back toMichigan yet. We werescheduled to fly home onSept. 14. The afternoon ofSept. 13 was when we weretold planes would be run-ning again and we could

    take our scheduled flighthome

It was a somber flighthome. Eerily quiet on theplane. On Sept. 30, Toddleft for his two-year dutyof protecting our country. His unit was slated to go

over to Iraq three differenttimes. We prepared thekids each time but it wascanceled. Todd had alreadyserved in the Gulf War sohe knew what to expect. I,on the other hand, was a

wreck. Newly married andwent from raising one childto two more virtually with-out a spouse for the firsttwo years of our marriage.

Sept. 11, 2001, was a daythat I will always remem-

who were the reason I kepton going.

    NEW YORK CITY

    IS BEING ATTACKED

    Manistee

Standing on the ArizonaMemorial in Hawaii and

watching the oil still bub-bling up from the sunkenship, brought to mind thedevastation my family felt

    when hearing the news on

radio that Pearl Harborhad been bombed. I wasonly 4, but I still remem-

ber. We were at war andwithin a few months I hadtwo uncles who joined theservice.

    Fast forward to Sept. 11,2001.

Walking down the hallat Jefferson Elementary

where at the time, I wasa teachers aide, I sawmy friend and colleague,Nancy Wrzesinski, walkingtowards me. We were theonly two in the hall at thetime. As we grew closer, Icould see the look of anxietyon her face.

    Donna, have you heardthe news?

What news? I replied.New York City is beingattacked, buildings are fall-ing down, there are fires,

and the whole city is inchaos, she blurted.

Nancy, being a practi-cal joker and known forher sense of humor, I said, youre kidding, right? However, I knew shed not

be joking about somethingso horrific. And of course, she wasnt.

Nancy died in June of2009, and forever in mymind, as a picture in a bookof memories, I can still see

her face as we met in thehall on that infamous day.Her words still echo as

    well.Little did I realize on

that day that whenever 9/11would be mentioned, thatId forever remember myfriend, Nancy, as well. Godrest her soul, and all those

who died on that sad, fate-ful day, which is now partof U.S. history, along withPearl Harbor.

    THAT HORRIBLE

    DAY HAS

    BY JEAN WARD

That infamous day,Sept. 11, 2001, has beenforever etched in my mind.

My son and I were sit-

ting at the kitchen tablethat very morning havingcoffee. I glanced at the TV

when this plane comes outof no where and crashedinto the tower.

What do you thinktheyre doing, making amovie? was my remark.

Exactly 8:46 a.m.American flight 11 crashedinto the North Tower ofthe World Trade Center.

At 9:03 a.m., United flight175 crashed into the SouthTower of the World Trade

Center. We were horrified.Who would do such athing?

How could this be hap-pening simultaneouslyin the United States of

    America?All hell broke loose.

People running, trying toget away. Rescue units run-ning toward the towers, having the same goal, try-ing to save lives.

    Nevertheless, it was a

    heart wrenching, soberingscene unfolding.

This horrible day haschanged people in many

ways, but one true fact thathas not changes is we areand always will be, theland of the free and thehome of the brave.

I remember all toowell where I was on Sept.1, 2001. My husband I

were with my parents inLas Vegas, attending atrade show for my fathers

business. Ironically, wewere staying at the NewYork, New York Hotel and

Casino. To make things evenmore coincidental, on theeve of Sept. 10, our hotel

was evacuated due to a pipebomb threat.

The next morning wouldbe a day that will live in mymind forever! Awaken tothe sight of planes crash-ing into the Twins Towerson TV and the deadenedsilence of a once bustlingcity, I could not believe

what was unfolding in frontof me.

    They say Las Vegas is

the city that never sleeps, but for those of us strandedfrom our family and lovedones back home, this wasa time we wished it had-- only to be awakened by

what would simply be a baddream.

With complete determi-nation on my fathers part,he overlooked the complic-ity and heat from the cityand stood for hours in line, arriving back with four bus

    tickets home.One month later we

found out my father wasdiagnosed with ALS andto look back knowing whathe did for us to get us backhome made this a trip I willlook back on and smile.

I know now that in aworld filled with disasterand illness, the strengthof love and determinationfrom even one individualcan overpower it all.

Dedicated to the memo-ry of My Sept. 11 hero, myfather, Norman Ware.

On Sept. 10, 2001, I waswatching Good MorningAmerica and just beforethe program ended, couldnot believe what I was see-ing as the airplane struckthe first tower and thenhorrified to watch the sec-ond plane hit.

Having two grand-daughters in New York City, knowing they did not livenear Wall Street, but notknowing where they might

be, I was frantic. The oldestgranddaughter had beenin the city several years,

but her younger sister hadjust arrived Sept. 9. It wasseveral hours before theirmother could reach them bphone. Fortunately the one

who had just arrived hada 517 area code on her cellphone.

During my workingyears at Glen of Michiganin the 1970s, I was fortu-nate to have had dinnerseveral times at Windows

on the World at the top ofthe World Trade Center. In2000, when I attended thegraduation of my grand-daugher from the FrenchCulinary Institute, it wasmy pleasure to take herto Windows on the Worldfor a fantastic view of New

in 2007 was an incred-ible, humbling experience,to realize all the lives that

were lost in such a tagicway. Having been in thosebuildings, rising to the very

With tears starting toform in my own eyes, Iheaded down stairs, call-ing to my mother. I foundher and one of my brothers

We were busy thatmorning making some pick-le relish when our relativescame over to say good-byeas they were going back toCalifornia after a visit. (Ittook them a VERY LONGtime to get back home.)They began to tell us aboutthe plane crashes on TV sowe turned it on and were ina state of disbelief as it just

didnt seem like it was real, like it was a movie or some-thing set up with a kidsplayset.

We heard our nephewwas on a train coming in towork from New Jersey. Thetrain passes right by theWorld Trade Center, head-ing to his office in down-town Manhattan. He sawthe first tower burning andby the time they reachedManhattan, the secondtower had been hit as well.

People on the traindidnt know what had hap-

pened at first so they pickedup cell phones and calledhome to find out. He thengot into the next trainhome and was relievedto find a train in opera-tion. People were scaredand panicked. Our nephewfound the entire experiencefrightening and scary. Withthe closing down of allbridges, tunnels and trainsone had a trapped feel-ing. It was a tense time atPenn Station as its a prettyprominent target.

The morning ofTuesday, Sept. 11, 2001,dawned as clear and brightin Minneapolis, MN, as itdid in New York.

By 8 a.m. CentralDaylight Savings time, mymother and I were standingin line at the ticket counterfor Northwest Airlines atthe Minneapolis/St. Paulairport, heading to theQuad-cities in Iowa. As wewere dealing with the ticketagent, a young man stand-ing next in line wearingheadphones suddenly saidTheyre saying a planeust hit the World Trade

Center in New York! Theticket agent frowned as shetyped away for a few sec-onds, finally saying, Well, everything at JFK is still ontime, and went on work-

ing with our tickets.I looked at my mom

and said, Wowthat musthave been one heck of anerror for air traffic con-trol. Just as the Northwestagent was handing us ourboarding passes, the youngman with the headphonesspoke again: Now theyresaying a second plane hitthe World Trade Center! My mother and I walkedaway towards the boardinggate area, still thinking thatit was a terrible air traffic

mishap involving smallerplanes. We discussed thepossibility of a computerfailure of some sort as werode the escalator down tothe commuter concourse ofthe airport. It seemed likean almost incredible eventthat hadnt really happened something the youngman with the headphoneshad imagined.

Walking towards ourgate we noticed a large

crowd standing aroundthe small bar area of theconcourse, surrounding the

bars television. Drawingcloser, I was strugglingto make sense of what I

was seeing onscreen: alarge concrete buildingthat appeared to be on firesomehow.

Suddenly, my 78-yearold mother grabbed myarm and said. Oh, myGod thats the Pentagon.

Were under attack! In a matter of secondsmy mother had actuallygrasped what was happen-ing to the U.S. a conceptthat was going to take mealmost a full 24 hours tocomprehend.

Needless to say, wedidnt fly that day, nor did

we want to. As someoneborn at the tail end of the

baby boomer generation, Ihad always felt protectedfrom the worlds madness

within the U.S. borders.Ten years later, Ive not

yet regained that feeling, nor have I lost my sadnessover the events that causedme to lose it in the firstplace.

I recall that a parentwho lived nearby came

into the school, tears inher eyes, saying somethingto the effect I just want tosee my children. We linkedarms and hands and slowly

    walked the length of thehallway.

I am sure it was verydifficult for me to focus onmy responsibilites, numberone of those being to keep

my cool and not revealanything to my students.

The next day was cre-ated to be as normal aspossible. I feel to this daythe building staff did anexcellent job of that. Icannot recall if we met

before school to discussour approach or not. WhatI did was to just state thatour country had had a seri-ous happening and please

just raise your hand if yourfamily told you. I have toadmit, I was very surprisedto see very few handsraised.

The ghastly images ofthe World Trade Center inNew York City on Sept. 11,2001, made an indelibleimpression on our heartsand souls that will stay

with us forever. As withtragedies of this magni-tude, memories of where

we were or what we weredoing are still crystal clearin our minds.

I had several visits tomy preschoolers and theirfamilies scheduled for thatday, a way to meet mystudents and parents inthe comfortable environ-ment of home before classstarted later in the month.Minutes into the firstappointment, the franticnewscasts began as the

    Twin Towers were struck.

It felt like someone hadhit me in the stomach andit was difficult to breathefor a moment. I rememberhearing sirens going offoutside (which, fortunate-ly, turned out to be totallyunrelated) and that sound

brought all of us back toreality.

As we left, I remem-ber hugging that Mom aswe tried to reassure oneanother. After makingsure my family was okay,my assistant and I madethe decision to go through

with the rest of our sched-uled home visits ratherthan cancel them. I thinkit was the right decision. The children were eagerto meet their teacher andexcited about the prospectof starting school; eachparent needed the comfort

from another adult. Thesweetness and enthusiasmof the children helped tocounterbalance the hor-rible uncertainty we, asadults, were feeling.

The very last home visitof Sept. 11, 2001, day wasplanned for the evening.

Arriving a few momentsearly I sought sanctuaryin the church next to thehome as I thought aboutthe events of the day andtried to put them intosome sort of perspective. It was a peaceful placeto reflect and collect mythoughts.

As I pulled into theyard, a small figure in abright yellow rain slickerwas splashing in a puddle.I got out of my car andthe little child said, Mrs.Rowley, I have been wait-ing for you all day! Littledid he know that as hetook my hand and led meinto the house, he wasoffering me a life line thatreassured me and my faithin the resilience of human

    nature.
