The Ramsdell Theatre box office will be selling the tickets beginning at noon on Dec. 1, and continue ticket sales from noon until 4 p.m. and on show dates from noon to 8 p.m.  The story begins with an enchant- ress casting a spell that turns an unkind prince into an ugly beast (Jeremy Engwall) and his castle staff into house- hold objects. Guests are forbidden, but Lumiere (Sean Gilbert), the former butler turned candelabra, takes pity on Maurice (Robert Isble), Belle’s father and an eccentric inventor, and invites the lost ship and more (“Beauty and the Beast”). Meanwhile, the village brag- gart, Gaston (Robert Lata), who is all about “Me,” has set his sights on Belle as his wife and refuses to accept her “no.” His efforts to capture Belle, if not her heart, lead the villagers to attack the castle and a battle takes places. The fight is not without frightening moments as Gaston and the beast confront each other, but, because this is a fairy tale, it ends happily ever after for all.  The other fantasy characters that live in the beast’s castle are Madame De La Grande Bouch, The Wardrobe (Kathryn Stansell); Mrs. Potts, the teapot (Elizabeth Zupin); Cogsworth, the clock (Ryan Fark); Chip, the cup (Blade Gates); and Babette (Casey Granada).  Jackie Karnisz is directing the produc- tion, Adrian Cole is the musical director, Kathleen Mielke is assistant director and Kit Weiner is the choreographer. Giving thanks and sleeping in A couple of weeks ago,I met with a man who wasconsidering a move fromsuburban Austin, Texasto Manistee County. Heand his wife own a customfurniture-making businessand most of their sales aremade over the Internet,so they’re free to relocatetheir business and fam-ily anywhere they likeand our community is thefront-runner.

They like Manistee forthey same reasons we loveManistee — natural beau-ty, small town values anda distinctive business com-munity — and this man’s

burning desire is to livesomewhere that doesn’tlook like everywhere else.

We talked for an hour ormore and I think we’ll be

welcoming this new family and this new business toour community soon.

Thursday wasThanksgiving and that

was followed by so-called“Black Friday,” the startof the holiday shoppingseason. A couple folks

have asked me if I’d like to join them Friday morningfor early-bird, door-busterdeal shopping at 6 a.m. —6 a.m. in the MORNING?Hey, I like a deal as muchas anyone, but that’s justcrazy. It’s one thing to getup Thursday morning at 5a.m. to put the turkey inthe oven — it’s a labor of love and besides, you cango right back to bed — butnot to buy a cheap gift.

For me, holiday giftshopping isn’t about get-ting the cheapest gift forsomeone on my list, it’sabout getting the right giftat a great price and I cando that all day, every day in Manistee County, with-out losing sleep over it.So here’s one more thingto be thankful for — hav-ing slept a little later onFriday, because the greatdeals on beautiful, unique

gifts will still be there when the sun comes up inManistee County. Count

 your blessings.
