MANISTEE Autumn Slawtersfourth-grade class at Kennedy Elementary is living proof that creativ-ity in the arts doesnt really have an agelimit.

Slawter recently held a Poetry Cafe with her class that allowed them to readpoems they wrote to family members andfriends. It was the first time she tried thisconcept in her classroom and the poetry her class created amazed the Kennedy teacher.

I got this idea from a teacher in Troy who has her own website and she does aPoetry Cafe with her students, Slawtersaid. We decorated the media centerarea to look like a cafe with table cloths,

and then we provided cof-fee, tea and treats for ourguests. The students thenread their poems and weinvited any of our guests toread their poems as well.

It was fun and really gives the kids a purposein their poems. They were very proud of their poems. We had an open mic forothers to read their favoritepoems, and I read one thatI wrote in seventh grade.

That poem Slawter read was published in the Flint Journal , but she pointedout what amazed her wasthe quality of the poemscreated by her students who were much younger sur-passed her own.

Their poems were really good and after I read mine,it surprised me just how

well they compared to theone I wrote at an older age,Slawter said.

Students studied a vari-ety of poetry styles includ-ing verse, haiku, rhyme andmetaphor poetry. Slawter

said that the rhyming sec-tion proved to be especially popular with the students. They also were given bare books that allowed them toturn their works into a book of poetry where they coulddesign a cover and addother illustrations.

We read the rhym-ing poetry of SheldonSilverstein, and the kids just loved it, Slawter said. That seemed to inspirethem to write their ownpoetry. We also learnedhow to write the haiku andmetaphor poems. A lot of them took one example totry and compare themselvesto an animal or think of themselves as a doctor, nurse.

Amber Miller took thatto heart and created a poem

that Slawter said was very descriptive of that profes-sion. The poem which wastitled I am a nurse

I am a shot of help topeople.

I am tube of comfortI am the bandage that

holds you together.I am an IV that keeps

you alive.I am the medicine that

heals you.I am a stethoscope that

keeps your heart going.I am a Popsicle stick

    that keeps your tonsilshealthy.

I am the blood pressureof your life.

I am the nurse the caresfor you the most.

Another poem thatdrew a great deal of atten-tion came from Abrielle

Briske called Kathy KillieTillie Tath. It read:

Kathy Tillie Tath would not give poor

    Lulu a bath.Shed shower herself,

brush her teeth, and even scrub under-

neath.Shed cook and clean, shed hike and grow

beans, but she would not give

her poor little dog a bath. A month, a year, a

decade passed until Kathy couldnt even do the math.

Lulu grew black andKathy Killie Tillie Tath

thought that was funny so she would just laugh.

This angered Lulu andshe grew red,

she tore up the couchand peed in the bed.

Kathy was speechlessand she took a med.Lulu was crazy in the

    head,she went nuts she ate

the house whole.Kathy Killie Tillie Tath

got so scared she climbeda pole.

So children, rememberto clean your pet

and if you cant thencall the vet.

Slawter hopes to turnthe program into an annualevent for the students of her class.

    POETRY: From Page 1

Students proudly show off poetry books they created with their works. Each student was given a bare bookallowing them to design the cover and illustrate their poetry.

    All membersof the class

    had theopportunity

to read their poem to the

    guests at thePoetry Cafe.

Everyone enjoys a laugh as a student from AutumnSlawters fourth grade class at Kennedy ElementarySchool reads a funny poem.

Summertime prom-ises easy living, but forour furry friends, warmer weather poses serioushealth risks. And thissummer, the NationalOceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) isforecasting weather condi-tions that could set thestage for larger than nor-mal flea and tick infesta-tions all over the U.S.

While its vital to treatpets year-round, take extrasteps in warmer months

both indoors and outside to ensure a safe season.

    Fight Fleas

During its two to three week average life, a singleflea will lay hundreds of eggs. Failing to stop there-infestation cycle couldmake eliminating theproblem nearly impos-sible. When fleas strike, nip the problem in the budimmediately. Keep your petgroomed and use a topicaltreatment monthly. Washpet bedding, vacuum rugsand carpets, and spray your yard.

The good news is thatkeeping pets flea-free no

longer needs to cost afortune. New generic treat-ments on the market areaffordable alternatives topopular veterinary brands

    like Frontline and Parastar.

For example, FiproguardMax contains fipronil, a veterinarian-recommendedactive ingredient, and thisnew formula has beenshown to kill fleas andticks quickly. Just be sureto weigh your pet carefully to ensure the correct dos-age. Dont guess your pets weight!

    War on Worms

Did you know almostall puppies under threemonths old have round-

worms? Its no wonder why a female can shedup to 100,000 eggs every day! Unfortunately wormsare common and there aremultiple species to guardagainst.

A pot-bellied appear-ance, weight loss, listless-ness and vomiting are signsof infection. To ensure yourpets safety, prevent worms before they start. Monthly deworming products like WormX Plus can treat any existing problem and alsoact as a preventative to keep

    puppies and adult dogssafe.

    Take on Ticks

You may think of ticksas a concern reserved forcamping trips and treksthrough the woods, butthese creepy crawlers live insuburban yards and urbanparks too. A tick bite is not

    just an annoyance; it can

lead to inflammation of the joints, lack of appetite, depression, kidney damageand Lyme disease.

Be sure to spot check your pooch (and yourself)after spending time inpotentially tick-infestedareas. Never try to removea tick yourself. If the heador pincers remain underthe skin, youll increase thechance of disease transmis-sion.

Apply a topical treat-ment that kills and repelsticks. If you prefer avoiding

chemicals, try a combina-tion of botanical oils that isdeadly to ticks and insects but safe for pets and people. For example the natu-ral ingredients in Sentry Natural Defense are pep-permint oil, cinnamon oil, lemon grass oil and thymeoil. More information ona natural approach to fleaand tick safety can be foundat www.sentrynatural.com.

    NORTH AMERICAN PRECISSYNDICATE

Spending time in the sun can result inmore than just fun and games. For instance, many people find that as they age, their skin begins to show the appearance of some pig-mentation commonly known as sun spots. These spots can increase in number as aperson ages.

Unfortunately, what many people dontrealize is that some of these sun spots may actually be actinic keratosis (AK), a skin con-dition that affects 58 million Americans andhas the potential to progress to squamouscell carcinoma (SCC), the second-most-common skin cancer.

The good news is an education effort israising awareness about the problem andhow to treat it. The campaign website can befound at www.SpotSignsofAK.com.

Too Much Sun Can Be Risky AKs are rough-textured, dry, scaly

patches on the skin that can range in colorand vary in size. They are the result of yearsof cumulative sun damage and most oftenappear on parts of the body that are mostexposed to sunlight, such as the face, scalp, ears, neck, hands and arms.

AKs are most common in older adults who have spent a lot of time in the sun dur-ing their lives. However, even routine activi-ties such as walking the dog or grabbing your mail can lead to sun damage. People

who develop AKs typically will not develop just one. The condition will present innumerous spots or will continue to presentintermittently over time.

An Effort to Raise AwarenessDr. Ellen Marmur a dermatologist

and cosmetic surgeon is raising aware-ness about actinic keratosis by promotingthe Spot Signs of AK campaign. The cam-paign is an initiative developed by DUSA Pharmaceuticals.

Said Dr. Marmur, Education aroundmelanoma and other skin cancers has been very strong, but actinic keratosis remainsrelatively unknown.

Early Detection Is Critical According to Dr. Marmur, approximately

510 percent of AKs develop into squamouscell carcinoma within an average of two years. Since there is no way to know aheadof time which ones will become cancerous,it is very important to seek a dermatologistscare. Frequent skin examinations are the key to early detection and prevention.

The campaign website contains infor-mation on the condition and how to find adermatologist, as well as information on therange of treatment options available.

People who get AKs typically do not get just one, said Dr. Marmur. The years of sun damage affect entire regions of the skin. This is just further reason for adults whothink they have AKs to speak with their der-matologist.

Sun spots on your skin may be a warning

Many people dont realize that the skin pigmentation known as sun spotsmay actually be actinic keratosis (AK), a skin condition that affects 58 million

    Americans.
