Sam Meli stood quietly at the southfence line, making repairs to a gate on thelast day of the year.
As winter days go, it was cool more
fall-like, really as he went about hisgate-mending chores.
Every now and then, though out ofboth habit and necessity he glancedover his shoulders, first over his left shoul-der and then over his right shoulder, tovisually scan the rolling hills and tall treesbehind him.
I keep an eye on them all the time, hesaid, because they keep an eye on me.
Some of them I can trust, others areust too unpredictable. One might stand
quietly next to me one day, but the nextday I think, well, I think maybe hed like tokill me. Really, I think hed like kill me.
The reality of the matter is, he coulddo just that, too. At nearly 1,000 poundsand sporting a rack of antlers that mea-sures close to 5-feet long, the male elk Meliwas keeping his eyes on could pretty muchdo what he wanted, whenever he wanted,to whomever he wanted.
Theyre not pets, theyre absolutelywild animals, Meli said. And you haveto respect them as being such. Whenyoure in their area, you have to be careful you have to keep your eyes open.
Meli, 38, owns the Powerline ElkRanch, nestled in northern Mason Countyabout 14 miles south of Manistee. Located
at the corner of Townline and Stiles roads, the elk ranch has drawn the watchful eyesof passing motorists for years.
Cars pull over all the time and peopleget out to look at the elk, and to takepictures, he said. Not too long ago, oneguy accidentally drove his car into the

ditch because he couldntbelieve what he was see-ing. Fortunately, he wasnthurt.
A 10-foot tall fencesurrounding Melis 7-acreranch keeps his prized elkin, and curiosity seekersand surrounding wildlifeout. Fences that stand8-foot tall dissect the inte-rior properties like a pie, further keeping the male
elk separated from thefemales. In the natural order
of things, that angers themale elk in October andNovember mating sea-son. More than once a maleelk has stood on his hindhooves and used his chinand front hooves to breakdown the 8-foot fence inorder to gain access to theteasing females.
I dont go near themales during that time,
Meli said. Their testoster-one is sky-high and theyrein no mood for me or any-one else to get too close.Ive gotten lots of bruisesand scrapes even somestitches from runningaway from them.
I NEVER
FORGET ITS
THEIRTERRITORY
Meli hopes to sell one ohis current trophy animalsfor $8,000. With a heardof 17 elk, Meli raises theanimals for hunting ranch-es all across the Midwest. He also sells some for theirmeat, which is consideredleaner and higher in pro-tein than beef or chicken.
Once the antlers havefallen off, he sells them, too. Nature artists carve
jewelry from the antlers, while others turn theminto light fixtures and evenfurniture.
Believe it or not, they do shed their antlersevery year, he said. Theytypically lose them rightaround March and almostimmediately begin growingnew ones.
Studies have shown thatelk antlers can grow nearlyan inch a day in the sum-mer. Because such antlersgrow faster than any othertype of bones, biologists
have studied them for yearshoping to learn the secretsof rampant cell growth
It is an amazing thingto watch them grow, hesaid. They know how and
when to use them, too. They can be dangerous(when they put their headdown).
Elk use their mam-moth antlers to protectthemselves against attacksfrom prey, including bears. They also use their antlersto wrestle with each otherin hopes of establishingdominance over male elk inthe herd.
Male elk, known asbulls, can also make loud, vocal sounds that can beheard for miles. Called
bugling, the alarming andobnoxious cry is also meanto express dominance overmales, as well as to attractfemales.
Still, at other times,Elk can remain stone-coldquiet and motionless.Because they easily blendin with their environment,
they may not be seen, eventhough they are standing inplain sight.
Because elk feed ongrass, plants, leaves and
bark, Meli spends about$350 on other feed for eacanimal, every year.
Im out here every daywith them, he said. Weknow each other. But, likeI said, I never take my eyesoff them. I never forgetthey are wild. I never forgetits their territory.

What you do for your babyshealth in the first year of life canmake a big difference for all therest. For one thing, scheduling
regular visits to the pediatricianis important. So is visiting aneye doctor. In fact, its estimatedthat one in 10 infants is at riskfrom undiagnosed eye or visionproblems.
The most critical stages ofvision development occur in achilds first year of life; there-fore, optometrists across theUnited States are providing free, comprehensive eye and visionassessments for infants between6 and 12 months of age througha public health program calledInfantSEE.
Since many eye and visionconditions dont have symptomsthat can be easily identified bya parent or during a well-babycheckup, a comprehensive eyeassessment by an optometrist isimperative to check for condi-tions such as strabismus (crossedeyes), amblyopia (lazy eye) andretinoblastoma (eye cancer).
Many parents are surprisedto learn that a childs eyes are
going through so many importantdevelopmental stages so early inlife, said Dr. Glen Steele, optom-etrist and chair of the InfantSEEcommittee. Its the ideal time todetect eye and vision problems
before conditions worsen or
cause developmental delays.Optometrists have the clinical
education, training and experi-ence, as well as the instrumentsand resources, to provide non-invasive eye and vision assess-ments for nonverbal patients. Anumber of techniques are used, including tests to determine if theinfant can fix his or her eyes onan object and follow it; to assessthe infants control of eye move-ments; and to identify certainobjects the baby prefers to lookat and at what distances. Theoptometrist will also use lenses
and a small light to assess how ababys eye responds to particulartargets. An infants eyelids andtear ducts will also be checked, and once the babys eyes aredilated, the doctor will examinethe inner eye. Detecting and cor-recting a vision issue as early aspossible is the best way to ensurehealthy eyes for the future.
The American OptometricAssociation recommends that
an infants first eye exam takeplace at 6 months of age. Unlessproblems are detected, the next
exam should be at age 3, againbefore entering school and thenyearly. To find a participating
InfantSEE doctor nearby, visitthe programs website at www.infantsee.org.

Theres good news for people wholove animals. The percentage of dogsand cats in homes adopted from sheltersand rescue groups has risen from 27 to29 percent in the last few years, whilethe number of healthy and treatable petslosing their lives for lack of a home hasdropped from 3 million to 2.7 million.
It would be even better news if thatnumber dropped to zero.
Thats the goal of The Shelter PetProject, the national PSA campaign toencourage pet lovers to make shelters thefirst choice and desired way for acquiringcompanion animals.
The television, radio, print, outdoorand Web public service ads direct audi-ences to visit www.theshelterpetproject.org, where they can search for a pet froma local shelter or rescue group, readadoption success stories and learnmore about pet adoption.
Approximately 17million people will
acquire a petwithin thenext year,
but manyremainunde-cided
wherethey willacquiretheir pet.Pets endup in shel-ters throughno fault oftheir own they are
often victimsof circumstance, said WaynePacelle, presidentand CEO of TheHumane Societyof the UnitedStates. If enoughpeople in ournation chooseadoption, wecan eliminatethe euthanasia ofhealthy and treatablepets in our country.
The campaign
hopes to encouragepeople to adopt fromshelters by explainingthat A person is the
best thing to happen toa shelter pet.
The Shelter PetProject is the first ani-mal welfare campaignthat the Ad Council hasundertaken in its 60-yearhistory. The campaign
was taken on in part-nership with The
Humane Society of the United States andMaddies Fund.
According to Maddies Fund presi-dent Rich Avanzino, We are hopefulthat the new ads will also inspire the 14million animal lovers who have alreadyadopted to tell their friends why sheltersare the first and best places to go for anew four-legged family member.
The ads, created pro bono byDraftfcb, focus on the relationship
between shelter pets and their owners byfeaturing pets observing their humansquirky yet lovable behaviors.
We are confident that the optimismof our message will resonate with themillions of potential adopters who arestill out there and bring us even closerto our goal, said Nick Paul, EVP, globalchief growth officer, Draftfcb.

While hair loss may be an inevita-ble part of aging, men no longer haveto live with it or suffer from thepsychological, professional and socialconsequences.
According to the InternationalSociety of Hair Restoration Surgery(ISHRS), at least 35 million men inthe U.S. are affected by male patternbaldness, and by age 50, approxi-mately half of all men will experiencehair loss.
While prescription remedies suchas Propecia and Rogaine offer somebenefits, the only way to permanently
restore ones hair is through hair res-toration surgery. The ARTAS System is the new-
est method in hair restoration, usingFDA-cleared technology that wasdeveloped with several leading hairrestoration physicians. This comput-er-assist-ed, image-guided hair res-toration technique offers a minimallyinvasive solution for permanent,natural-looking results.
Hair restoration is performed asan office-based procedure. Implanted
hairs develop their own blood sup-ply and begin to grow, and new hairsare seen in a few months. New haircontinues to grow over the course ofa year, making gradual changes ina persons appearance. The popularcosmetic procedure works by mov-ing healthy, functioning follicles tothe areas of the patients scalp mostaffected by baldness.
Losing ones hair can make menfeel less attractive and less confident.
I started losing my hair when Iwas in my mid-20s and it was a hugeblow to my self-confidence. I havebeen seeking a permanent solution
ever since, said Vincent DeLany, who recently had his hair restoredwith the ARTAS System. JamesHarris, M.D., of the Hair SciencesCenter of Colorado in Denver, per-formed the procedure on DeLany.
We couldnt be more pleasedwith the results which were con-sistent with what we saw during theclinical trial across a broad groupof patients, said Dr. Harris. This
technology allows patients to per-manently regain the vitality of their
appearance affected by hair loss.My entire practice is commit-
ted to helping patients with variousdegrees of hair loss and providingthem with state-of-the-art optionsthat are very safe and effective, commented Craig L. Ziering, D.O.,FAOCD, founder and medical direc-tor for Ziering Medical Worldwide. The ARTAS System is an excellentsolution to hair loss that is less inva-sive and offers a quicker recoverytime while maintaining natural, permanent results. This procedureoffers many benefits. There are nostitches, so you can quickly return
to your daily activities. Those whoundergo the procedure experiencelittle discomfort and no linear scalpincision, making it possible to weartheir hair very short without concernfor visible scarring.
Also, a persons appearancegradually changes over time for morenatural-looking hair regrowth.

Most resolutions focus on living ahealthier life eating healthier, exercis-ing more or being less stressed butattempts to achieve that goal can leadto more stress and less success, found arecent survey by Braun Research.
According to the survey, about onein five women (19 percent) admit theywere not successful in sticking to theirresolution to eat healthier and morethan a third of women (36 percent)were not successful in attempting toexercise more.
Two in five women (42 percent)admit they were not able to reduce theirstress levels. Less than half of women(45 percent) stuck to their resolutionsfor three months or less while one infive (20 percent) only stuck to theirresolutions for a month or less.
Breaking such goals into moremanageable steps may be the key, saysKathy Freston, author of HealthyLiving Conscious Eating. Keeping itsimple can make healthier eating a real-ity. She suggests these tips:
Switch out milk for Silk in yourcereal. Whenever you have cereal forbreakfast, try switching delicious SilkPure Almond Vanilla Almondmilk foryour typical dairy milk. Not only will
your hearty breakfast help keep you sat-isfied, but youll also enjoy an excellentsource of calcium, vitamins D, B12 andantioxidant vitamin E.
Eat an apple a day. Apples arerich in dietary fiber and a lower-calorie snack that can help fill youup. According to the USDA nutrientdatabase, apples are low in sodium andcontain a variety of essential nutrientsincluding B vitamins, vitamin C, beta-carotene, potassium and other minerals.Eat them chopped, whole or sliced butnot juiced, as juice can have too much
sugar and lacks fiber.Stay hydrated drink 8 ounces of
water, eight times a day. Water is cru-cial to your health as every system in
your body depends on it. You can drink
glasses of water or eat plant foods likefruits and vegetables that contain a lotof water. For example, oranges are 87percent water and cucumbers are 95percent water.
Making resolutions an achievable reality
NAPSI Photo
One way to get the benefits of plant-based nutrition is to substitutealmondmilk for typical dairy milk in your cereal.

NORTH AMERICAPRECIS SYNDICATE
Advocates of lung can-cer screening are hopingthat CT scans will do forsmokers what colonosco-pies have done for thoseat risk of colon cancer find the cancer earlyenough for therapy towork.
Early-stage diagnosisis linked to longer survival
rates for breast cancer, prostate cancer and coloncancer all cancers thathave standard screeningtests. Until now, however, there has been no provenscreening test for lungcancer, which is the lead-ing cause of cancer deathin the U.S.
Usually, by the time amore definitive symptomof lung cancer becomesobvious, the disease hasalready progressed tolate-stage cancer, saidLaurie Fenton-Ambrose,president and chief execu-tive officer for the LungCancer Alliance, a nationalnon-profit organizationdedicated solely to patientsupport and advocacy forpeople living with lungcancer and those at riskfor the disease.
A recent study sup-orted by a grant from theational Cancer Instituteas published in August
n The New Englandournal of Medicine. Thisandomized, controlled
trial of more than 50,000Americans found thatspiral CT (computedtomography) screeningperformed each year forthree years reduced thelikelihood of deaths fromlung cancer by 20 per-cent compared with thosescreened by standard X-rays.
The American Societyof Clinical Oncologysannual report on progressagainst cancer listed thestudy as one of 2011s topadvances.
The study led at leastone national insurer WellPoint to offercoverage of CT scans forcurrent and former smok-ers at high risk for lungcancer who have medi-
cal histories similar tothose in the study. Thegroup studied was free oflung cancer symptoms,
between 55 and 74 yearsof age and had smokedthe equivalent of a pack aday for 30 years. The par-ticipants were either cur-rent smokers or had quit
within the past 15 years. This was the first time
a well-designed studyon a large population ofsmokers showed that youcould save lives throughscreening CT scans, said John Whitney, a
WellPoint medical direc-tor. Studies like thisone provide the medicalevidence we need to makegood coverage decisions.
Were looking forward
to medical research con-tinuing to evolve on thisissue.
Fenton-Ambrose saidthe Lung Cancer Allianceis hoping more insurers
will make the same deci-sion as WellPoint.
Now that we have thescience, our work shiftsto bringing the benefit ofscreening safely, effective-ly and equitably into thehealth care system, saidFenton-Ambrose.
For those who want toknow if they are at riskof lung cancer, the LungCancer Alliance has set upan informational websiteat www.screenforlung-cancer.org to help peopleunderstand more aboutthe symptoms, screenings,
disease and treatment.
