A high school band students worstnightmare is they are preparing to take thestage for a solo and ensemble performanceor a big concert when they suddenlydiscover something has broken on their
instrument. In the past, that would have providedinstant panic, and probably the studentnot being able to perform. However, atManistee High School, the chance to avoidthat situation is always possible thanks tothe instrument repair skills of paraprofes-sional Jalyn Morgan. She is a certifiedinstrument repair technician who has beenworking with the Manistee Area PublicSchools for the past five years.
It adds tremendously to have some-one with the skill sets like Jalyn, saidManistee Area Public Schools Director ofBands Cynthia Swan Eagan. When wehave an instrument that breaks here shecan look at it and often do the kind ofrepairs that allow a student to start play-ing in 10 minutes instead of the week and10 minutes that it takes to send it away forrepairs.
Morgans skills were recently show-ased at the state level when she held aorkshop for the Southwest Michiganchool Honors Band that were held atndrews University in Battle Creek. A totalf 16 schools took part in the event thatas directed by the Andrews Universityand Director.
The reason they got in touch with meas my old college roommate is a bandirector in Benton Harbor, and knew whatwas doing up here with the instruments,
aid Morgan. So, while the students wereorking with the Andrews Universityand director, I held an instrument repairlinic with their band directors. They evenrought instruments that were broke to
earn how to fix what was wrong.I gave them some tips on a couple of
ools they could have in their class thatould be very handy for them to use for
hose little repairs that kids come up witht the last minute before a concert. Theyre facing some serious budget issuesown there and were really eager to learnow to do it.
Morgan did instrument repair for amusic store before making the move toManistee five years ago. Being a musicmajor in college at Western MichiganUniversity where she played the Frenchhorn, she originally had hoped to becomea band director or gain employment as aprofessional musician.
I was a musician, and you eitherbecome a band director or play profession-ally, but the odds of playing professionallyare slim, said Morgan. I realized I didnt
want to run a band program. I love work-ing with Cindy, but I wouldnt want to runan entire program, as she works too hard.
With music a lot of times, there areother options like music therapy that mostpeople dont realize are available, so I justsort of stumbled upon it as a possibility.
Morgan is a self-described tinkerwho enjoys working with here hands inother venues like stained glass, lace and alot of other hobbies. The concept of fixingmusical instruments fascinated her so shebecame certified in band instrument repairfrom Minnesota State College -- SoutheastTechnical.
What added to the challenge is sheneeded to expand even more in her musi-
cal background to do the repair on thevarious instruments.
When you fix them, it is necessary toplay them well enough to know they areworking correctly, said Morgan. So, Iessentially had to learn how to play every-thing. As part of my studies, I also touredfactories to learn how instruments weremade, because you dont really realize howmuch can go wrong on an instrument untilyou start taking it apart.
Morgan said that after moving to

It is a tremendous fit, andwe work well together andI am lucky to have her asmany hours out of the daythat we do.

THIS IS HOW ITS DONELast week, Nancy and Jim
Goodwin, owners of GoodysJuice and Java in downtownManistee, sent the followingletter to their fellow downtownbusinesses:
Most of you have probablyheard that Goodys has been soldand we want to tell you directly
that this is the case. A year agothis month we sent out a letterletting you know our intentionsto sell. In that letter we said thatthis was succession planning forus and that we were looking forust the right person to take over
the business. We have foundthat person in Rita Blamer. Ritahas been in the coffee businessfor over a decade and owns twocoffee shops in the Grand Havenarea. She is enthusiastic, dedicat-ed and best of all loves Manistee. She will be an on-site managerand not an absentee owner. She
will continue using the Goodysname; keep our current staff andoffering quality service and prod-ucts. Rita will be taking owner-ship in May.
Our sale took about one yearfrom the time we sent you thatletter and happened withoutany active advertising. Also, itoccurred during one of the worsteconomic times in Michigan. Wethink that this happened for afew reasons:
1. We were committed tokeeping Goodys in Manistee andwerent leaving til we replacedourselves.
2. Goodys is a very success-ul business with a proven trackecord.
3. Last, but not least is thetrength of our downtown. Some
anistee residents think theres nothing downtown. They wanthe 1950s big department storeso come back and that just isntoing to happen. Heres whate like to do with that naysayer
- we ask them how often theyisit downtown, we inform themhat River Street today, evenithout the future impact theogue will have, is healthier than
0 percent of downtowns ande suggest they visit one of theumerous successful businesses
on River Street that have suc-ceeded during very tough eco-nomic times.
We have valued being RiverStreet business owners andbelieve that the future of GoodysJuice & Java and River Street islooking good. River Street willflourish with the strong retailersalready here and the addition ofother individuals with the entre-preneurial spirit to create theirown business. Finally, we will behere. Manistee is our home andwe are looking forward to being
customers.Regards, Nancy & JimSuccession planning, provid-
ing for the future of your busi-ness, communicating with yourmarket and supporting the spiritof enterprise and the characterof downtown -- this is how itsdone, friends! Thanks, Nancyand Jim Goodwin for being partof our lives and our community!

EVENTS:FROM PAGE 2
It isnt any secret thatmany Americans havebecome fat and lazy froma physical standpoint, butnow it appears that we justmight be doing the same
thing from a mental stand-point with our lives. Its no secret that
obesity runs high in thiscountry, and it is a shameto witness young childrenwho are already experi-encing the impact of it.Besides being overweight, the sedentary lifestylesof today have children asyoung as 10 years of ageand lower battling Type IIdiabetes, high cholesterol, heart disease and otherserious illness because oftheir weight.
That isnt just sad itsa crime in my book. Afinger should be pointeddirectly at parents thatdont pay attention to whattheir children are eatingand doing. For many par-ents its easier to stuff thekid with junk food fromthe time they can walk andthen plop them in front ofa television or computerscreen while they go do
Obesity isnt just physical
anymore it is also mental
their own thing. When I was a kid you
couldnt keep me or myfriends in the house. Itdidnt matter what timeof the year it was, wewanted to be outside swim-ming, playing baseball inthe summer, sliding andskating in the winter. Weeven used to shovel off myfriends driveway in thewinter so we could playbasketball.
See many kids doing
that these days?Me neither. The net result for us
was you didnt see a lot ofkids that were overweightand fighting health issuesusually reserved for peoplein their 70s. I think thereis better health in my gen-eration of baby boomersbecause we are the onesyou see out biking, jogging, swimming and keeping fit.The generation that followsus look like they are readyto start gasping when they
walk up a set stairs. Whatis even sadder is their kidsare in even worse physicalcondition.
What scares me is won-dering if the next step willbe mental obesity? By thatI mean people not wantingto think about the mostsimple tasks.
Doubt me?How many people when
they are balancing a check-book do subtraction andaddition the way they weretaught in school? If using
a calculator is the way youwere taught, then maybeyou are doing what youwere taught. In fact a lotof checkbooks today comecomplete with a calculator.
I seriously wonder ifthere will come a timewhen people will still knowhow to multiply, divide, subtract and add on a pieceof paper. Want to reallyblow the younger genera-tion away? Then do it inyour head like we all weretaught to and some kidswill think you a magician.
What really started methinking about this physi-cal and mental obesity isthe advertisement on tele-vision for the new cars thatgo into a parking spot on
their own. Have we becomethat lazy that we cant evenpark a car?
But then again, lookwhat cars do for usnow. They have GlobalPositioning Systems thattell us when to turn, whichdirection to go and every-thing else. Apparantly look-ing at a map is too muchof a mental strain for somepeople.
Some models comecomplete with telephonesand music systems where
all we have to do is say thepersons name and theywill dial it up or put on thatmusic for us. Perish thethought if we had to moveour arms to do that task. Iknow some will say it is forsafety reasons, so peopledont run off the road, butfor me it is just as muchabout mental obesity.
What we are also losingin the process is interactionwith others and it shows inour society. People not onlydont talk with other peo-
ple, they dont know how tocarry on a a conversationanymore. There are peoplein todays world who couldactually work and live theirentire life without ever
leaving their home or hav-ing an in-person interac-tion with another humanbeing.
Doubt me?In todays high-tech
world there are some whocan work off their com-puter at home, do theirbanking on it and evenpay their bills without everstanding up. Heck, you caneven order pizza and haveit delivered so, in a sense,it can cook for you as well. The mental obesity evengoes to the point where
they dont even have toremember to make houseor car payments as it canautomatically withdrawnfrom an account eachmonth via computers.
Mental obesity. One of the things about
the newspaper businessis people periodically saysomething they say wasntin the newspaper when itactually did get printed, but they just missed it.For years I have made ajoke that I can write the
stories for you, but I cantread them to you.Well, not true anymore,
as there are a few news-paper websites where anautomated voice will readit to you. That is some-thing I can see as a goodthing for visually impairedpeople who struggle to readnewsprint. However, whenwe get so mentally lazy thatit is a chore to read, thensomething is wrong with

Manistee five years ago,she contacted Swan Eagan. She said she wanted to tellSwan Eagan that she was intown, and would be avail-able to help if needed.
Cindy got me intothe community band, andinvited me to meet herclasses, said Morgan. Shehad been without any help, and recognized I could beof some use to the pro-
gram. That led to the parapro-fessional job which origi-nally entailed working fulltime with Swan Eagan andthe various levels of theband program. However, asbudget restraints tightenedup, she had some otherduties added like workingas a lunchroom monitor, and in the library.
Morgan said the MAPSband students are prettygood at taking care of theirinstruments, but they stillperiodically breakdown.
Sometimes the problemsare complex, but she alsosmiles at the thought ofsome that result frominquisitive young minds atthe elementary level.
A lot times the littlekids will take things apartand all it needs is to beput back together, saidMorgan. Other times theyhave something simple likea valve stem or spring hascome loose. Another prob-lem is there are thin piecesof cork under and between
the keys that pops off.Morgan said she doesntspend a great deal of timeon repairs, but the kidsstill bring things to herattention fairly regularly. Her other duties are assist-ing Swan Eagan in vari-ous capacities every day. However, having her repairskills is a very welcomeaddition and costs thestudents very little in mostinstances.
The kids are prettygood and responsible withtheir instruments, saidMorgan. In the middleschool, we have a brasscleaning day where we givetheir trumpets a bath. Youhave to encourage kids toswab things out and keepthings clean. If kids takegood care of their instru-ments, they really last along time without a lot of
work.I am not sure the par-ents realize what they savenot sending it in to a musicstore. I dont charge themfor the repair and just forthe equipment, so it worksout very well for them. Wehave some school instru-ments and a lot of them arevery old and need regularrepair.
Swan Eagan knows thevalue of what Morgan addsto help keeping her award-winning bands movingalong in high gear.
This is huge because itfrees me up to the teachingthings and is a wonder-ful enhancement to havesomeone of those skills towork with us, said SwanEagan. It is a tremen-dous fit, and we work welltogether and I am lucky tohave her as many hours outof the day that we do.
What is more impor-tant is the students ofthe Manistee Area PublicSchools music departmentare the ones who get the
greater benefit. They knowthat if something goeswrong with their instru-ment, even at the lastminute just before a perfor-mance, the odds are goodthat they still will get thechance to perform thanksto Morgan.
It is money well spenton a paraprofessional thatbrings another dimensionto an already first rate bandprogram.

this society. When I was a kid, we would live out
our sports fantasies on a neighborhoodbaseball field, basketball court or playingtouch football in the road. When is thelast time you saw any kid playing touchfootball in the road? Do they even knowwhat it is?
What they do instead is develop theworlds strongest thumbs playing videogames. That is sad because besides thephysical obesity it creates, it also developsa mental one in it takes away their abilityto dream. Ever wonder why creativity lev-
els in this country have taken a nose divein the past decade. If you cant dream, then how can you reach for the stars?
Mental obesity.Yes, technology is a wonderful thing,
but the need to exercise our minds andour bodies is still vital in making sure welive a long, productive life. It is somethingI plan to keep doing well beyond the timeI...

Customer Testimonial
Hi my name is Sherry Ronning of Shee r Delight. I nd the West Shore
phone book to be my book of choice for both personal use as well
as advertising my business. I like the West Shore book for its helpful
information pages but Im convinced that others are choosing to use
PDS directories as well.
I always ask my new clients how they heard of my business and a
substantial amount state that they found my ad in the West Shore
Phone Directory. Since I placed my ad back in 2003, I have seen a steady
increase in my business. I de nitely feel that advertising in the
West Shore book is a smart investment for my business.
