MANISTEE Transition is somethingeveryone experiences throughout thecourse of a lifetime.

One of the many magical things thattake place in the Lighthouse PregnancyCenter Complete Makeover program is

the transition of teenage girls. They oftenenter this program as shy, insecure younggirls from the seventh to 12th grade lev-els, but leave 10 weeks later as poised

young ladies who are confident and feelgood about who they are as a person.

However, this program just doesntfocus on physical beauty it focuses onthe inner beauty possessed by each ofthe girls. It is something that LighthousePregnancy Center Executive DirectorKelly McColl said often brings about greatrevelation and transition for the girls.

It has been fun to see that transfor-mation, McColl said. We want themto know their value as a person. It is a

Christian program, but we hit all thosetopics that all kids face like drugs, alco-hol, abstinence until marriage, mannersand the other difficult decisions they face.It really is about life.

This program has been running forthe past five years, but only the last threeincluded the banquet and makeover. Theultimate focus remains on what partici-pants gain from the first portion of theprogram.

The girls were assigned to table lead-ers for the 10-week period who worked

with the girls on talking about and deal-ing with many of those issues. Mixed inamongst the serious discussions werefun activities that helped bond the girls

together with each other and their lead-

    ers.Handling the organization of the

program were co-coordinators CarissaSchmutzler and Amy Rankin while serv-ing as table leaders were Vickey and JenaStalmack, Mary Ellen and Jenna Vincent,Thea Callesen, Nichole Seymour, ConnieMiller, Melissa Hughey, Linda Elo andLisa Kutschke. They spent many hoursduring the 10-week period working withthe girls and having very important dis-cussions.

It all led up to the big banquet onApril 21 at the Faith Covenant Church.

One part to the Complete Makeover banquet was for the ladies get their hairdone by local hair dressers.

However, unlike thepast 10 weeks that werefocused on dealing withtheir inner beauty, thisevent was designed tofocus on their outer beau-ty. All 30-plus girls were

iven complete makeoversy having their hair done,

    make-up and having theirnails painted.

All the hairdressersdonate their time andvolunteers helped withthe make-up so it is just

amazing how it all comestogether, McColl said.We have been meetingsince February and todaywas just the icing on topof the cake. We have all

ad the opportunity toove and appreciate all of

    them.During her talk at the

awards segment, McCollsummed up what they arereally looking to achievewith the program.

The complete make-ver program is meant to

each young women theirrue beauty, McColl said.here is no doubt look-

ng at them tonight thathey are beautiful, buts that inner beauty thate are truly focusing on.arissa (Schmutzler) said

o me the other day I justope that we touch their

    hearts. While this has

been fun for all of us, thatis where our real concernis with that inner beauty. So, we look around andgo through that checklist before the banquet.Hair done check, nailspainted check, makeupapplied check, heartstransformed check. That

    is our priority for each

and every one of you girlstonight. We will not stopdoing that for as long as

    we have memories of thisprogram.

Prior to an awards cer-emony, the girls and theirfamilies were treated to a

banquet dinner that wasprepared by the Manistee

    County Community

Kitchen under Chef AlFrye and his crew. Theygave a brief history of thecommunity kitchen andhow they strive to preparehealthy foods. Everyonedined on chicken marsala,

brown rice, green beans, salad and homemadeMichigan apple crisp.

    A slide presentation

featuring photos of thegirls doing many activitiesthroughout the 10-weekperiod was shown dur-ing the awards ceremony.Faith Covenant ChurchPastor Marc Eix also spoketo those in attendanceabout the importance of

believing in yourself andestablishing a relationship

    with God.Girls were presented

a certificate for complet-ing the program and giftsfrom their table leaders. They also will receive a

portrait of them dressed upthat was taken by profes-sional photographer MeganSavela of Megan ElisePhotography.

A special gift of a pearlwas presented to eachgirl by Mary Huskey who

works at Reusch Jewelersto signify the beauty thatis contained within all of

them. Huskey said it was a

way for the girls to remem-ber the program and whatthey learned from it.

PDS IS OUR NUMBER ONE CHOICE!Number One Termite and Pest Control has been advertising in the West

Shore phone book for over 12 years. Over the years we have tried

advertising with other phone books but have found that 60-70% of our

new business nds us in the PDS phone book.

I personally like using the book because its easy to nd what you are

looking for with its two column format. Other books are three and

four columns making the print so small you can hardly read it, but not

the PDS books, they make the print larger and easy for your eyes.

We would recommend PDS Directories to any business fortheir yellow page advertising needs. Their sales sta arefriendly, helpful and never pushy.

National Learn to SwimDay is Saturday, May 19,and parents across thecountry are gearing up to

et their children out of theouse and into the pool.

Its important to teach yourids to swim early on, as

progressive learning willelp them develop skills

that will last a lifetime.According to the Red

Cross, drowning is the sec-ond leading cause of unin-tentional injury-relateddeath for children ages 1to 14 years old. A childshould never be left unat-tended in or around thewater -- even in your homepool, where statistics showtoddlers are most suscep-tible.

Learning to swim isnot only a necessary safety

measure; its also a funphysical activity that fami-lies can enjoy together.

SwimWays, the creatorof the Swim Steps pro-gram that helps kids learn

to swim, is sharing foursimple steps to help youintroduce your children tothe water, and set the stagefor a lifetime of swimming:

nGet your child com-fortable in the water at anearly age. You can intro-duce babies to the waterusing a baby float. TheSwimWays Baby SpringFloat for example, has amesh play space for toysand splashing. Teach themthat the water is a fun placeto play.

nExplore the waterwith your child using swim-training aids speciallydesigned to help parentsteach kids to swim. The

Swim Steps line includesthe Swim Sweater andSwim Vests that will com-fortably help your little one

balance and paddle -- twoimportant pre-swimming

    skills.nOnce your child is

ready to learn to swim, use a graduated flotationdevice, such as the PowerSwimr, to allow him or herto develop swimming abili-ties at his or her own pace.Be sure to keep an activeeye and supervise at alltimes!

nWhile you may feelyour little one has the skillsto swim without help bynow, remember it takes alot of courage to traversethe water alone.

Its often beneficial fora child to ease into swim-ming with a bit of extrasupport before taking their

first solo strokes. Kids canuse kickboards as they

begin to master their swim-ming skills and gain theconfidence needed to swimsuccessfully.

You can find informa-tion and ways your familycan participate in NationalLearn to Swim Day at www.TeachMeToSwim.com.Before you know it, yourchild will be a fish in the

    water!
