Manistee County Blacker Airportdirector Barry Lind was all smiles this
week as he looked around the local ter-minal and saw several hundred people
who gathered for the initial flight ofFrontier Airlines Essential Air Service(EAS) into this area.
The airport manager had goodreason to smile because air serviceto Manistee was taken to a new level
when the wheels of a 47-seat Embraer
145 Frontier Airlines jet softly toucheddown, much to the delight of those inattendance.
I couldnt ask for a better firstflight, said Lind. Seeing that planecome here for the first time and settingits roots made it a wonderful day. I amsurprised at the number of people thathave just stopped by, and it has been aconstant stream all day long.
Lind said people flying from theManistee County Blacker Airport will
be getting much-improved service, andwill see the difference in the upcomingweeks and months.
Everything they have said, they
have delivered on, and it has been apleasure working with them, said Lind. They sent 10 different people heretoday to make sure everything wentsmoothly.
What is also nice is they will havean extra plane in Milwaukee in case
anything goes wrong and that is goingto be big to avoid cancellations. Today, everything was on schedule, includ-ing the plane actually coming in a littleearly.
The Manistee County BlackerAirport Authority searched for manymonths to find a carrier that would
be approved by the Department ofTransportation, and when Frontier
Airlines entered the picture it proved tobe the perfect fit for the local airport.Although they had a Embraer 145 pro-vide the initial flight, the local airport
will be serviced by a 37-seat Embraer135 in its regular service.
Frontier Senior Director of Planningthe Schedules Bob Westgate was inManistee on Monday and the Denver-
based airline official said they are look-ing for a long, healthy relationship withthe local airport. He said the associationis something that the airline is veryexcited about getting off the ground.
It is a very big day and we lookingforward to having connecting serviceto Milwaukee where you can get con-necting flights to many points through-out our network as far as California,
Washington state down to Costa Rica
and other places as well, said Westgate.Today we are bringing in the largerEmbraer 145, as we normally will havethe 35-seat Embraer 135 coming inhere. The 145 is painted in the Frontier
First flight ofFrontier Airlines
a huge success

If grocery shopping bores you, then just take a look around
It isnt any secret that Ilove the people watch-ing game, as it is always
interesting to watch theunique things that all of usdo in certain situations ofeveryday life.
This past weekend Iwent out to get some foodat the grocery store and
it was fun to watch someof the more interestingthings that were takingplace around me. It actuallystarted out in the parkinglot before ever setting footinside the store when Inoticed what I like to referto as the parking lot snug-gler.
What this consists ofis someone who has a nicecar who makes a specificpoint of parking it out inleft field in the parkinglot about 40 yards from thenearest car to avoid thosepesky little door dents. However, it never seems tofail that the worlds biggestclunker comes driving upevery time and snuggleson up in the next parkingspot about two inches away. The clunker driver doesthat even though there are100 empty parking spacesbetween them and thestore.
What you also see inthe parking lot is what Irefer to as the torpedoshoppers. These are the
people who refuse to walkfive feet to put their cartin the cart corral. With theunbelievable strong windswe had the past few weeks,it turns those loose cartsinto torpedoes. I am will-ing to bet that parked carsin those lots have receivedmore direct hits in the lastfew weeks than the entireMerchant Marine did fromthe U-boat commandersduring World War II.
Speaking of the strongwinds, one of the more
funny scenes from the park-ing lot is the Pepsi Cha,Cha, Cha dance. This is thepeople that get out of theircar trying to juggle 15 twoliter plastic pop bottles intheir arms when a gust ofwind suddenly hits, scatter-ing the bottles in all direc-tions. That, in-turn, sendsthe person dancing aroundthe parking lot doing the
cha, cha, cha trying tocatch all the bottles before
they blow into the nextcounty.
You also have what I callthe jugglers performingout in the parking lot. Noit isnt someone taking theoranges they just boughtand putting on a show. It isthe people who insist theydont need the cart to makeit out to their car eventhough their arms are filled
with grocery bags. When they reach their
car the old saying thatswhen it hits them, comes
into play. It is then theysuddenly realize their handsare full and their car keysare in their purse or pocket. So they start to juggle the
bags trying desperately notto drop them as they try tofind their keys. The brokenfood containers lying inmany a grocery store park-ing lot are a direct result ofa juggler mishap.
However, once you getin the store, the interestingthings to watch continue. Itusually starts in the bottlereturn area where most of
us usually end up behindBubba and his brotherClyde who decided today
was the day to bring in theirlast six months worth of
bottles. So we stand therewith our four empty bottleswhile Bubba and Clyde pro-ceed to put their 787 cans,
bottles and plastic bottlesthrough the machines.
When the magicmoment comes that theyfinally finish dont getahead of me here folks... thesign lights up with the bin
full sign and you then haveto wait for the attendant toempty the machine.
Another one of thefavorites are the lets seehow many machines we cantie up people in the bottlereturn area. They comein with cans, bottles andplastic bottles and insteadof doing all the cans firstthey proceed to put one in
all three machines until theline behind them stretchesout to the street.
Few people realize thatgoing to a grocery storecan also be a place where
you can watch people geta good workout becausethere are occasions whereit takes gorilla strength to
break apart the shoppingcarts. Dont be surprisedif you see a 5-foot, 2-inch,105 pound lady suddenlytaking on a Hulk Hoganlike appearance to get herhands on a cart.
And speaking of carts, there can be 3,000 shop-ping carts sitting there
waiting to be used and Ialways seem to get the one
with the front wheel thatdoesnt work right. So Imake my way around thestore with the cart making aloud thucka, thucka, thuckasound that has everyoneturning their heads in mydirection.
What is also fun towatch with the carts is thecorrelation between the
way people drive their carsand push a shopping cart.
You will see the speed mer-chants whipping across thestore like Dale Earnhardt
Jr. and practically sendingsome poor Grandpa sailinghead first into the producesection when they blast
by him so fast. The exactopposite is the little oldlady putting along out fora Sunday drive to church,
while everyone lines upbehind her muttering that
they cant get past.Shoppers come in allvarieties such as Mr. andMrs. Detail who have acolor-coded chart outlin-ing the exact game planfor where they plan to gofirst in the store. Of course,
just like a football quarter-back the Mom will usuallyaudible a play if they get
bumped off course by anaisle blocked with shoppers
by calling out to her hubbyorange juice aisle five, orange juice aisle five tomake sure they keep drivingdown the field to the check-out in a timely manner.
These people are alsoarmed with a calculatorand if the check-out personis 10 cents off on her totalthey are most certainlygoing to throw out the redchallenge like a NationalFootball League coach todispute the total.
On the opposite end ofthe spectrum is the tossershopper. What they dois walk up and down theaisles not having anythingin mind and they tossanything into the cart thatappeals to them. Theirshock wave usually hitsat the checkout when the
clerk tells them the finaltotal. These often can bethe could you put that one
back type of shoppers aswell at the checkout whenthey realize they dont haveenough money to pay for it.
Then there are the tor-nado shoppers who comeupon a beautifully laid outdisplay and proceed to gothrough every single item. The problem lies in they
will toss the items in everydirection and leave thedisplay case looking like atornado hit for everyonethat follows.
Something that I thinkdrives all of us crazy is theOops, I forgot somethingperson at the checkout
who has half of her order
rung up when she suddenlydecides it is necessary tosprint to the back of thestore for one more thing.
You can actually hear themusic from final Jeopardyplaying in the minds ofeveryone else in line as they
wait for them to return.Of course, when people
reach the checkout lines itis especially fun to watchin a busy store. It is kindof reminiscent of a green,
white and checkered flagfinish in a NASCAR race
where they have one lap togo after a crash and all ofthem drive like crazy to thefinish to first in line.
Yes, even grocery shop-ping can be fun to watch. So, take a look around thenext time you and beforeI...
See you nextWednesday.

The first Frontier passengers head for the terminal.
brand and we wanted thaton day one;.
Westgate said that ear-ier indications of bookingsave been very positivend the airline is pleasedith what they are seeingut of Manistee. He saidhey have hopes it will be a
ong and prosperous rela-ionship.We are looking for
ome healthy loads outf here, and the advanceookings are lookingood, said Westgate. So,think it is going to be fan-
astic and it is going to begood way to get into thisart of the world, and theeautiful aspects you haveo offer on the West Coastf Michigan.
The Frontier executiveaid that the accommo-ations at the Manistee
ounty Blacker Airportre a perfect fit for whathey were looking for in aerminal. He added thatustomers are going toee reliable service out of
anistee than what theyave received in the past.
It is a delightful termi-al, and now we will haveome nice shiny jet aircrafto fill it, said Westgate. Our plan is to offer thanur predecessor, in partecause we have a spareircraft in Milwaukee so
hould there be any issuesith our aircraft assignedo the trip we will be ableo get another one here.
Westgate said thatrontier is looking to buildstrong association with
he Manistee community.e said that he met withany members of the
usiness community ononday morning to dis-
uss any concerns or issueshey might have with their service.
We are trying toartner with many areas
n the community, saidestgate. This morninge talked with some of theusinesses and our goal
s to put Manistee on theap.Airport Authority chair
rvin Kowalski said it waslong process, but the
inal result was well worthhe wait.
We have been veryatient, but we are veryatisfied, and I thinkhis is the greatest, saidowalski. I know a lot of
y family is going to belying out of here in theext few weeks.
Fellow airport author-ty member Ross Spencergreed that the day wasomentous for more than
he just the airport itself. It is a real important
ay for the community, aid Spencer. It is prettympressive to have an areaf this size to have airlineervice and also prettympressive for an airport ofhis size to have commer-ial service for 50 years.
There was a time whent looked like Manistee
ight have been left withingle engine nine-seatlane for service. The
witch to Frontier Airliness something that airportuthority member Paulchulert said it was aajor difference.
At that time wehought we were goingowhere quick and this
s very positive, saidchulert. It seems to meo be a perfect fit for us,
nd I hope it is for themnd that they gain passen-ers.
Fellow authority mem-
ber Bob Wilson agreedwith Schulerts assessmentand pointed out that itshould mean big things forthe overall Manistee area.
This is a great dayfor Manistee and there isno question that we willgo nowhere but up from
here, said Wilson. Thisis first-class and a realcontrast to the nine-seater
with a single engine andone pilot. There is no way
but up from here and a lotof the credit goes to BarryLind and the work he didon it.
The initial flightfrom Milwaukee took 25minutes and passengerssaid they enjoyed a verysmooth flight. For WhitneyGoldman and JacobDeering it was a surpriseto arrive at the Manistee
County Blacker Airportand be greeted by so manypeople.
We werent aware itwas the first flight, saidGoldman. The flight wasreal quick and I think
we took much more timegoing through security inMilwaukee.
Crew members from thefirst flight gave those at thegrand opening an addedthrill when they did a fly
by on their departure fromManistee. Airport officials
felt is was the perfect wayto open service to ManisteeCounty Blacker Airport.
