MANISTEE Thetransition from elementaryschool to middle school is a
ig step for many children, and it often tests their char-acter and team-buildingskills.
For years, the staffat Kennedy ElementarySchools has been address-ng those needs by taking
the students on the annualWinter Whiteout program. It consists of traveling to theCentral Lake Bible Camp in
ustin where the studentsstay overnight to work onmproving those skills.
They accomplish it by a
series of fun activities mixedaround some serious subjectmatter. What makes it workso well is they take the stu-dents out of the classroomand into a more relaxedatmosphere.
This was the seventhyear that we have doingit, said Kennedy teacherMatt Phillips. The Winter
Whiteout is a real uniqueexperience for us, and it hasreally helped the students.
We started doing it whenthey first moved the sixthgrade to the middle school. There wasnt a sixth gradeprogram so they created thisfor us. What it does is give
the kids the opportunity tolearn something about eachother.
The Kennedy teacherpointed out that the Central
Lake Bible Camp is theperfect location for thisprogram. They really caterto the children in the sixthgrade age level.
They are great hosts anddo a great job, Phillips said.
Students picked up quitea few things they didntknow about each other. For Chloe Pepera it was theopportunity to bond withsome members of her classthat she didnt know very
well.I learned that everyone
is different, but we all canconnect in some sort of
Confidence building programs like cross country skiing were also part of theWinter Whiteout program.

Prescription products can protect your dog from tape-worm infestation.
NORTH AMERICANPRECIS SYNDICATE
Pet owners now have aneasy way to protect theirpets from the unpleasantexperience of a tapeworminfestation.
How do you know ifyour dog has tapeworms?Traditional testing meth-ods use a stool sample(feces) to detect manyparasites, including hook-
worms and roundworms.
But if your dog has tape-worms, this test will oftenbe negative. In most cases, the diagnosis is made when
you see these segmentscrawling either on the freshstool sample or on yourdogs rear end.
But what do they looklike? Well, bits of tape-
worms are most commonlycompared to cucumberseeds or grains of rice, just
wigglier. When they dryout, the tapeworm seg-ments become hard and
yellowish in color (think
sesame seeds) and maystick to the hair, fur oreven your pillow.
New research fromAuburn University showsthat tapeworm infectionsin dogs may be much more
widespread than previouslyrecognized. The new test-ing method indicated that45 percent of over 1,000pet dogs tested positive.Earlier studies placed thataverage at 1 percent preva-lence of tapeworms foundin dogs.
Most tapeworm infec-tions occur when your dogeats a flea or small mam-mal that carries an earlystage of the worm. They arenot directly transmittableto you (unless you eat fleasand small mammals), andmost tapeworm speciescause minimal health prob-lems, with a few excep-tions.
Since winter has beenmild across the country,
we can expect to see anincrease in parasites, withfleas and wild animals
bringing in a variety ofproblems, states Dr. HeidiLobprise. Even when youare providing flea controlon your pet, its difficult tocontrol every pest in theenvironment, so you needto be aware that diseasessuch as tapeworms can still
be transmitted.How can you protect
your dog? Fortunately, with a l ittle knowledgeand one easy step, youcan keep heartworms, tapeworms and other
worms from rearing theirugly heads. Prescriptionproducts available from
your local veterinarian l ikeIVERHART MAX (ivermec-tin/pyrantel pamoate/prazi-quantel) Chewable Tabletscan help. IVERHART MAXChewable Tablets are aonce-monthly preventa-tive that can help treat andcontrol roundworms, hook-
worms and tapeworms.Contact your local vet-erinary clinic and you canstart protecting your dogtoday; or to learn more, log

What is FPIES?FPIES is Food Protein
Induced EnterocolitisSyndrome. It is commonlypronounced F-Pies and isa severe inflammation andreaction in the stomach andntestines. FPIES reactions
often show up in the first
weeks or months of life orat an older age for an exclu-sively breast-fed child.
Cows milk and soyproducts are the most com-mon FPIES triggers, butmany foods can cause anFPIES reaction, such ascereal grains, vegetablesand chicken. Often confusedwith food allergies, sincethe reaction occurs only inthe stomach and intestineswith other organs being
naffected, it is a proteinntolerance. This makes
diagnosis difficult and oftenfrustrating.
A child with FPIES mayexperience what appears to
e a horrible stomach bugut the bug only starts a
couple of hours after theoffending food is given. Some children experiencemild symptoms, whileothers have such severevomiting and diarrhea thatthey can become seriouslydehydrated and go intoshock, which can result inseizures, shallow breathingand clammy skin.
FPIES reactions almostalways start around two
ours after eating the intol-erable food and result invomiting, commonly fol-
lowed by diarrhea, whichcan last up to several days.If your child is experiencingsevere symptoms of FPIESor shock, immediately call911 first, as well as yourchilds physician.
DiagnosisIt is common for FPIES
to go undiagnosed for weeksto months, and the symp-toms are often blamed on
the stomach flu. FPIES isa newly recognized diseasein the medical community, and unlike with commonfood allergies, standardtests are routinely negativein FPIES patients.
Keeping a food journalmay be helpful in identify-ing food triggers if you think
your child has FPIES, asdiagnosis typically occurs
based on food reaction his-tory and physical examina-tion.
FPIES is often anunderdiagnosed and mis-understood disorder. Dueto limited research and agrowing need for globalawareness of this syndrome, many physicians struggleto accurately diagnoseand treat FPIES patients.Physicians often confuseFPIES reactions with theflu or a common stomach
virus, said Fallon Schultz,founder, International
Association for FoodProtein Enterocolitis.
TreatmentTreating FPIES varies
depending on the child; forsome, treatment is avoidingthe foods that cause vomit-ing and stomach pain.
However, if your baby
NAPSI Photo
Children with FPIES canbe helped.
FPIES: What is it andcould your child have it?
is diagnosed with FPIES,we recommend eliminat-ing those specific infantformulas and food proteinsfrom his diet and switchingto an amino acid elemen-tal formula like Neocate.Switching to a special for-mula like Neocate will helpensure that your baby getsthe nutrients and calorieshe or she needs to grow
and thrive, says StevenYannicelli, Ph.D., R.D., vicepresident of medical andscientific affairs for NutriciaNorth America.
Many children outgrowFPIES by age 3 but this can
vary based on how severetheir symptoms are and
which foods they react to.To determine if your childhas outgrown FPIES, it is
important to work with yourdoctor and evaluate it on afood-by-food basis.

whiteout:From Page 1way, Pepera said. We all hungout a lot and got to talk with eachother. We also do some differentactivities and overcome our fearsof each other by doing fun thingstogether.
For Shane Harrigan, it was achance to learn about teamwork. He gained the ability to work
together with others in solving achallenge.I learned teamwork from all
the activities that we did duringour stay, Harrigan said. We hadto figure out how to cross a (imagi-nary) river with just boards usingteamwork. In the end, the otherteam helped us with their boardsto get across so we all workedtogether on it.
Mayan Liston used the experi-ence to develop some new friend-ships during the trip. She spenttime with classmates she hadnthung out with before the Whiteoutexperience.
It was the chance to makefriends with people you thought
you would never hang out with bydoing activities, Liston said. Wedid orienting, identifying trees andother things.
Teamwork was the number onepriority for the students through-out the stay at the camp. Manyprojects focused on the simple taskof working together on a project.
In building the fires, we allhad to work together to put thesticks in the right place, make thefire and then we made smoresafterwards, Sarah Sheathelm.
The students also had theopportunity to take part in manyfun activities like tubing, skiing,
broom ball and ga ga ball. For some students, it was the
first time they were able to try someof these things. Their confidencegrew as they learned how easy it wasto accomplish.
I went cross country skiingand had no idea how to do it, BillieGajewski said. I fell a bunch oftimes, but everyone helped me upand it was fun.
There also was an educationalcomponent to the trip as the stu-
dents also were given cold weathersurvival skills. They were taught howto stay warm in sub-zero tempera-tures and the proper way to build
a bonfire. It is important skills tolearn in the event one of them everbecomes stranded in the woods.
The week before leaving forWhiteout we learned survival skillslike how to avoid hypothermia,Carly Schmeling said. When we
went out there we read a storyabout someone who had hypother-mia and froze to death. We alsolearned how to use a compass tofind our way out.
The students felt the experiencenot only allowed them to grow as aperson, but that it also gave themsome valuable knowledge about
wilderness survival in the cold. Italso instilled in them a confidenceof being able to handle it.
All the things they taught us,
like how to build a fire, I didntthink I was going to be able to doit, said Sharon Tetzlaff.
They even had a literal tasteof adventure at one point. In Mr.Smiths class they had the chanceto eat some fried crickets.
With the mild winter that tookplace in Michigan this year, somestudents were concerned that
Winter Whiteout might not beall that white this year. However, much to their surprise the CentralLake Bible Camp had about a footof snow when they arrived at it.
We were a little concerned
when the first groups went thatthere wasnt going to be enoughsnow, Phillips said. But it heldon and there was enough on the
ground to allow for the outdooractivities. In the past we have had 17
below zero and two or three feetof snow, so we had to do someadjustment this year.
The Kennedy Elementary teach-ers were proud of what they sawfrom their students on the trip.
It was very satisfying to seesome of the strengths come outon the students that you nor-mally dont see in the classroom,Phillips said. Some of the kids
who are kind of reserved becomeleaders and some became friends
that werent friends before.Students also were given an
informational talk on wildlife fromEd Shaw of the Carl T. Johnson
Hunting and Fishing Museum atMitchell State Park in Cadillac. He is a park interpreter for the
Department of Natural Resourcesand he presented a lesson on black
bears, Phillips said. He told themabout the challenges bears faceand the things they do to survive inthe wild.
Winter Whiteout once againproved to be an opportunity forstudents to grow both education-ally and as a person. Students raisemoney for the trip every year andschool officials hope to keep itgoing well into the future.

Students also had plenty of fun playing broom ball.
