    Operation Babylift: Retired Air Force

    nurse recalls horrific airplane crash

    YOU DO

    WHAT YOU

    HAVE TO DO

    BY DAVID L. BARBER

    MANAGING EDITOR

    Focus.For all the medical

training nurse ReginaAune possessed, for all theemergency crisis practiceshed gone through, it washer ability to focus thatsaved her life, and the livesof many, many children

on that hot, humid day inVietnam in 1975.

Even as the mammothmilitary aircraft she wasriding in was plummet-ing to the earth, she wasable to focus on the task athand staying calm andunder control.

Even as that cargoplane was bouncingthrough a rice paddy allthe time being ripped apartat nearly every seam theyoung lieutenant was ableto focus on positioning

herself, and others aroundher, to survive the crash.

Then a few mintueslater, even as she was seri-ously injured with deeplacerations, a broken footand more, she was able tofocus on a tiny silhouettethat was trying to crawlfrom the burning plane.

After having alreadycarried several babies andsmall children to safety, and despite her painful, bleeding injuries, Lt. Aunefocused all her attentionon that little boy whocould not yet walk, butonly crawl, and she pickedhim up by the seat of hispants to pull him from theagged and twisted metalust before the child would

have fallen into the mud-died rice paddy, wherehe surely would havedrowned.

Oh, he didnt likebeing picked up by the seatof his pants at all, Aunesaid Tuesday evening asshe relaxed in Manistee. He screamed and fussed.

But I was able to get tohim OK, and thats all thatmattered. Then and there, thats all that mattered.

Today, 36 years andtwo days after that ter-rible tragedy in Vietnam,Aune is able to laugh a bitabout the baby boy whomshe plucked from certaindeath, only to have himscream and fuss about it.

Maybe its taken thislong to laugh about any-

thing that happened thatday so many peopledied, including dozensof babies and toddlerswho were on their way toAmerica in search of newhomes.

Everywhere I steppedafter I got out of the plane, all I could see was deathand destruction, she said. But we were trained toresponed to such situations though how can you evertrain for such a tragedy and thats just what I andthe other survivors did, wepulled each other out andgot everyone to safety.

    OPERATION

    BABYLIFT

    REMEMBERED

Aune, a retiredcolonel from the UnitedStates Air Force and cur-rent dean of nurses andhealth sciences at TexasA&M University, was inManistee on Wednesday torelive Operation Babylift,an American initiative thatbegan in 1975 to help bringhundreds of Vietnamese

orphan refugees to theUnited States, to find themnew homes.

In fact, Aune was on thevery first flight that carriedthose youngsters, a largecargo plane turned pas-

senger plane that crashednot long after take off in aVietnamese rice paddy. Shewas the flight nurse andmedical team leader of thatfirst Operation Babylift.

AUNE:FROM PAGE 1Flying at about 23,000 feet and

carrying nearly 250 orphans to thenew homes in America, the plane hadjust taken off from the Saigon-TanSon Nhat Airport when its pressuredoor, center cargo door and a por-tion of the rear cargo ramp were allblown off following an explosionbelieved to have been caused by sometype of mechanical failure, an in-air

explosion that hurled Aune the entirelength of the upper compartment.Though the pilot attempted to

return the plane to the airport, theaircraft had sustained so much dam-age that it crashed in a rice paddyand skidded for about a quarter ofa mile before it became slightly air-borne again for about a half-mile.Then, just that quick, the plane strucka dike and broke into four parts, some of which immediately caughtfire. The wreckage lay in waist-deepmud and water, and was glazed withleaking, burning fuel.

Miracously, 175 of the 328 aboard, survived. Dozens and dozens of chil-

dren were killed. Eleven crew mem-bers died in the crash, too, including

Aunes friend, Capt. Mary Klinker.Their names are forever etched onthe Vietnam Wall.

Many of the children who hadbeen placed in the upper portion ofthe plane survived without too muchinjuries, at all, Aune said. But westill had to get them out, and getthem out quickly.

    INJURED, AUNEWORKS

    UNTIL SHE PASSES

    OUTAfter helping to extricate chil-

dren and others from the crumpledairplane, the seriousness of Aunesinjuries began to take effect.

I knew my foot was broken, andI remember thinking I was grateful Istill had my shoe on in order to helpstabilize it, she said. But then, aftergrabbing that last little boy by his

backside and getting him out, I dontremember too much. I passed out.

Hours later, as she, herself, wastreated by fellow medical personnel, she learned that not only had she suf-fered a broken foot and deep lacera-tions to her left arm and leg, but thatshed also suffered a broken leg and abroken bone in her back, too.

All of which she was able to focuspast until she had helped carry 149children to safety.

You do what you have to do, shesaid. You focus, and you do what hasto be done. Im not sure anyone canbe prepared to see so many babiesand infants and others hurt so bad,but you have to focus and help them thats what youre trained to do.

Just a few months after helpingto pull so many children from thecrashed airplane, Aune was awardedthe Air Forces prestigious CheneyAward for valor, extreme fortitudeand self-sacrifice in a humanitarianinterest. The award was named inmemory of 1st Lt. William Cheney, who was killed in an air collision overItaly in 1918.

She was the first woman to bepresented the award.

    Customer Testimonial

My name is Sharon Taylor of Snip n Doodle Dog Grooming. I am

very pleased with the results I am receiving from my yellow page

advertisement in the West Shore PDS Phone Directory. Since my ad

came out last year, I have seen a tremendous increase in business. I

know I can attribute a large part of my growth to my yellow page ad.

Included in paper work that I have clients ll out is a question ask ing

how they come to choose my business. A large share of them have

stated that they saw our ad in the West Shore Phone Directory.

I de nitely feel that my ad with PDS directories is money wellspent!
