Arts Jerking at West Prep by Shajah H

In the morning you see boys walking around jerking.Even while sometimes they're in the lunch room at lunch time standing in line waiting for their lunch or at snack shack, they jerk. Most of the time they're messing with people and the next thing you know you see them jerking in a circle with people standing behind them cheering until the dean comes or the bell rings for us to go to class.

What is jerking? Jerking comes from the California. The people that started the jerk were the New Boyz wearing their striped skinnies. Lots of kids and teens love to jerk even if you dont know how to jerk. It is so easy! All you have to do is act like your moving your legs and feet backwards! If you don't know how to jerk, put your left leg in front of your right leg and move them in and out to the music.

The Songs we jerk to!!!!!

Mr. Mezzacapa draws the BIG picture! By

Kenia V.

Mr. Mezzacapa teaches art, 6-12 grade. His student expectations are to draw and paint better and to learn more about art. Mr. Mezzacapa expects them to push themselves and try things that they have never tried before. Sometimes he lets them try on their own, then he tries to figure out their ideas and thoughts. He steps in and shows them different ways that the problem can be solved. When Mr. Mezzacapa was really little he liked to draw. In middle school an art teacher opened up all the possibilities of art. They are still friends even now. He didn’t just teach him about art but about life. Even now, from his own art, Mr. Mezzacapa tries to make kids realize that “Art is everything around us," he told me as I interviewed him. I looked around the room a couple of times I saw a variety of students overflowing with confidence. I thought, “Wow this is amazing!” Students acted very engaged and were very quiet.

and chords without the piano. Mr.

the students have learned how to work

as a team, how to read basic music,

Guitar Hero comes to West Prep

By Ramon A.

Did you ever wonder what it would be like in one of the coolest classes ever? Well now you won’t have to with this article. The class I am talking about is the music tech class which is being taught by Mr. White. In his class, you can make music and do many extraordinary things. For example, you can do this by using a program that forms sounds to make music. His classes includes grades, 7 through 11. The students are working on an opinion and research piece about a topic in the music industry. Some students are researching free speech, artists vs. labels, and how mobile music is changing the way music is distributed. According to Mr. White, all six graders must become seventh graders before they can be able to go into his class. I hope as a six grader that Mr. White changes the rule and lets six graders enroll in his class.

Art of the past and the future

By Yesenia H.

Do you want to know who are the winners of the most spectacular art contest ever known? The Martin Luther King Oratorical

Contest took place on February 22, 2010 at Texas Station Casino. There were many contestants from many schools, but only three

winners. There were winners in the high school competition, middle school competition, and elementary school

competition. Jasmine L. from Legacy High School won the high school division. Yesenia H. from Charles I. West Preparatory

school was the winner of the middle school competition. Finally, Jeffrey L. from Griffith elementary school won the elementary

division. Grades K-12 could enter and it was important because many people are talented artistically and they need to show what

they can do. According to Mrs. Knight, an art teacher at West Prep and the person in charge of the art competition, art was included

in order to " teach everyone the wonderful things about art."

In the oratorical, many kids of all ages must give his or her rendition of another persons published speech.

The oratorical was a chance for kids of all ages to express there feelings toward Black History Month in a good way. there kids

from different schools from all over Nevada. There were 50-55 kids who participated against each other to win medals. The

maximam time to spend on a speech is 10 minutes. One of the students in the sixth grade Lazaro won 2nd place. That is pretty

impressive because there were 6-10 schools and out of all of the school he won.so that's why i think that the oratorical is a pretty

good event.

each other to see who is the best. The good thing is that everyone respects each

other. The chess club meets every Mondays and Wednesdays and some times the

members meet after school or before school.

The person in charge of the chess club is Mr.Steward. He is very cool because he lets

every one join the chess club. It doesn’t matter if you're good or not. It’s about you

having fun. He started the chess club because he thought West needed one.The chess

club started in 2006 and since then the chess club has gotten better and smarter.

The Dance Facts

There are many things here at West that you can participate in, but there is one that I

think is very interesting like the Dance Team. If you like to learn more keep on reading.

There are many things that you could do on the Dance team like learn how to dance, and

other things. The person that teaches them is Ms.Crump and they told me that she is

really cool. There are also many people in the Dance team. You also need to have good

grades to be in the Dance team.

There are many people on the dance team and one person is Lizette L. She has told

me that it is hard to do some dances but after you practice for a long time it gets easier to

do all the dances you need to do.

So if you like to dance you should go and try out and see what happens.

Cesar Owns The Court

By Sharelle M.

Lazaro Cesar, number 32 on the basketball team, sits

with me to share some tips in making the team, and he talks about

his personal life. Lazaro says “to be on the basketball you need to

have at least a 2.0 grade an avenge. Lazaro also says “to never give

up keep going and reach for the stars.’

Someday Lazaro would like to go pro and also wants to go to

college to play basketball. Other than basketball, Lazaro likes

football. Lazaro had always had a passion for basketball and now he

has a chance to play for the West Prep Huskies basketball team.

Lazaro favorite color is blue. Lazaro also says that if he was

on an island and he had to pick three kinds of food to eat for the

rest of his life it would be grapes, pasta, and eggs. If you ever see

Lazaro give him a high five or a pat on the back and tell him he’s the

bomb for making the team.

Interesting News from Coach McGee By Resheemah S.

Coach McGee feels that his team was a good team but could’ve been better. He was not very impressed with how many games they won! Coach McGee likes to think that he’s a good coach but doesn’t think so when the team loses. He thinks his team is not playing up to their potential. They need to work harder on their fundamentals. Coach McGee coached Cheyenne High School’s football and baseball team so I know he knows what he is doing. He feels good when they win a game because hard work pays off. I think Coach McGee is doing everything to help the team. He is trying to get the team to win more games. He wants his team to be happy and have fun when their playing on the court. His coaching is paying off. Maybe, someday his players will go pro.

YouTube Crazyiness???!!! Chris K.

Why is YouTube so famous? Maybe it is because of some of the thousands of hilariously insane videos. Maybe it is because you can express your inner creativity. Maybe because it is fun. I don't know, but YOU do. YouTube was created by 3 PayPal employees in Feb.2005.This website is over 5 yrs old. The website was created by 3 former PayPal employees. YouTube was bought off of these three gentlemen for $1.65 million dollars in Nov. of 2006. Google is now the full owner of Youtube. They have owned this

website for 4 years. That is amazing because they did this with no help at all. The most watched video on YouTube is “ Charlie Bit My Finger.” This video alone has gotten over 167 million views. The person who has the most subscribers on

YouTube is Nigahiga. He has more videos than the

YouTube sensation Fred. This guy Expert village has over

Runescape “Game Crazy?” By Robert A.

Runescape, the fantasy MMORPG (Massive Multiplayer Online Role playing Game), holding over 300,000 players and hosting servers worldwide. Runescape is a growing game, having a place in the Guiness World Records for most played online game. Who are the makers of Runescape? The makers of Runescape are Andrew Gower and Paul Gower. Andrew is the main owner and got help from his Paul to forward his ideas. They worked on a beta which was released in November 4, 2001, originally known as Runescape Classic. Then they released Runescape 2 in March 17, 2004 and Runescape HD (High Definition) in July 14, 2008. Since then they have been working on new updates almost every day. Runescape is also very educational. It teaches stuff like, fishing, cooking, woodcutting, fire making and so much more. Runescape is also like in the olden days, so there is no fire making with lighters. It also teaches you what kind of material to use to catch fish and stuff like cooking! Runescape’s staff members known as “Jagex” (Java Gaming Experts) based their game coding on Java. They use Java to code their game and it’s the main source of the game. It also helps with connecting game server files connecting to characters, as the character files are saved on a database.

Runescape has very many minigames, such as Clan Wars, Bounty Hunter, Fist of Guthix and so forth. You get to explore a

very diverse world with quests, friends and foes. You can even become a Player Moderator (Pmod) all you have to do is help people

constantly, if you become a Player Moderator, you get a silver crown next to your name, pretty awesome! You can report players

who have been saying things that were offense with the "report abuse" button. Jagex moderators (Jmods) have a gold crown next to

their name, that way you can tell them from player moderators.

With many skills you have vast ways of being rich and making friends. You can participate in holiday events and get special items. With Clan Chat you can toggle the “lootshare” option when killing monsters, this means each player gets an equal amount of items in cash. You can also enter clan chat and chat to specific people and share money making secrets. You can earn skillcapes, get into high scores, and become a Runescape legend. What are you doing reading this article? Get out and play some Runescape at www.Runescape.com!

Spoofs! By Kelli D.

Today I will be reviewing spoofs of songs. The spoofs that I will be reviewing are

"Outer Space" which is a spoof of "Poker Face" by Lady Gaga and "The 7 Things Guys

Don't Have To Do" which is a spoof of "The 7 Things" by Miley Cyrus. I think that you

should see the video and song for "Outer Space" because It's making fun of how people

say Lady Gaga is weird, and like how she has her bangs over her forehead. They

decided to say say that she's an alien with a third eye so she covers it with her

bangs. They also show her wearing things that are similar to what she wears in the real

music video. In the video for Outer Space, they also show a lady watching her act all

alien so at the end of the music video she’s locked up because everybody thinks that

she's gone crazy. It is pretty funny.

In "The 7 Things Guys Don't Have To Do," they're basically telling about things guys

don't have to do.These things are like how guys don't have to give birth or shave legs

and stuff like that. It's funny because of the way the girl on the music video portrays the

part that she plays, but you can't get the full point of how these music videos are funny

unless you actually watch them. You can find them on

Will the REAL Lady Gaga stand up, PLEASE!?!?!?!

Students of the Month

!Angelica is more than straight A's!

Angelica N. has been the student of the month 2 times in a

row. Angelica got to be the student of the month for 2 times

because she did her best on all he assignments, she improved her

grades, and she was a hard worker.

Angelica's interest in this school is the student store and that

we have lockers. Her favorite subject is math. She really enjoys

being the student of the month alot. The subject she does most well

in is English and her 2 most favorite teachers are Mr. Figgers and

Mr. Ford. She became the student of the month at Mr. Sherry's

class because she worked hard on all her assignments in that

class. She loves Mr. Sherry's class alot because she gets to learn

new things.

What Angelica likes about this school is that we have a student

Student of the Month

By Marvin M.

Leilani H. is a well rounded student. She does all of her work. She comes to

class on time and she gets good grades. If I was picking student of the month

I would pick her every month. She behave well. She is an awesome student

and only has had a few bad grades. She has English with Ms.H, choir with Mr.

Catton, P.E. with Ms. Cooper, science with Mr. Holmes, math with Mr. Sieler,

reading with Ms. Kelter, and study skills with Mr. Figgers. Her favorite class is

choir with Mr. Catton. Leilani is in the Mountain West house at West Prep.

She told me her mom influences her to do well in school to get an

education. She says she doesn’t act the same way at home. She behaves well

in school and she does want to go to college. She also has good citizenship and

could work well with anyone. Her secrets to her success are to behave well in

class and to behave well no matter what. She goes to bed on time at night and

eats a good breakfast. The advice she gives students is to respect your

teachers and everybody you see and to get good grades.

The things you could learn from Leilani is to encourage others to do well.

Also, in her opinion, you should have everything organized in your binder at

home and your stuff for school. She would tell you to eat a good meal before

coming to school or eat breakfast at school. Leilani would tell you to try your

best effort to get good grades and do well at everything you do.

Humor Helps Julio Learn

By Lazaro C.

Julio O. is a Cuban boy who was born in San Francisco, California. He is twelve and lives in a house with 4 sisters and one little brother. He grew up with no brothers to hang out with because his little brother was too small. It is even harder not growing up with a father that is not around for him to do things that fathers and sons usually do.

He is an positive influence to lots of students because he always has his work done and rarely gets in trouble at school. Julio's grades are not the best but he is passing all his classes. He told me while I was talking to him that the person who influenced him to do so well is his mother. His mother always told him, “If you go to school you can be anything you want, even the first Hispanic president”.He still remembers those words when he is doing a test or homework and wants to quit.

Julio is not the kid that wants to go around fighting others because he knows if he does that he won't be what he dreams to be, a professional skater. Julio hasn't been in trouble or done anything stupid because he knows that his mom won't like it.Julio is a soldier battling to succeed in life no matter who or what tries to stop him.

Perez’s Perfection for student of the month in the HBCU!

By: Angelica N.

There are many students in the HBCU house that are very hard workers, but who

earned this month's student of the month?

Well, Jennifer Perez sure earned this month's student of the month.Yeah her! I'm

talking about the one that has dark black hair. She's wearing one long ponytail (most of

the time). You know, the one that's in the HBCU house and has Mr.Bennett, Mr.Catton,

Mr.Lang, Ms.Garcia, Mr.Figgers, Mr.Sherry, and Mrs.Walls. Now you might want to

know why she got chosen as student of the month at West Prep Academy. So why don't

you read on to find out!

First of all she’s a great student. How? Well, she participates daily in class everyday.

She's never playing around in class, but is paying attention to her teacher's lessons.

Jennifer Perez also has good grades. You'd be impressed if you saw them! Maybe since

she studies for tests a week before it, is why she gets most of the answers right. Other

just don't study that often, but she does! Jennifer also does her assignments. In all of her

assignments she gives in as much as her effort as she can and she always turns in her

assingments on time no matter what, but there’s more to it. Like when others need help

on their work she help them with pleasure. She doesn't give people the answers but she

does help them. Did you also know that Jennifer came from R. Guild Gray Elementary

School. She also visits the library every Sunday in the afternoon. Wow! I can see how

she's such a very hard worker in school. You see, she’s one who actually cares about her

education.

some more information about being student of the month.

Jazmin B. wears glasses, she has long hair, and she is short. She has grades that will impress any teacher. She

does her best and neatest work and she doesn’t let anything distract her (almost anything). She goes to the

library when ever she has an assignment to do and she asks her teachers if she doesn't understand something.

She’s respectful to all her teachers and classmates. She gets to her classes on time and never is late. She is

definitely the best student. So listen up students, if you want to become Student of the Month be like Jazmin B.

and do your best work!

Teachers of the Month

Masterpiece of life

By Ajhaya H.

Hello, do you know Malachi Williams? If you don’t then I will tell you some facts about him. Malachi teaches art here at West Prep after school in 21st

Century. He is a great and cool art teacher. He likes to have fun. He doesn’t tell kids to be quiet and read a book quietly. He lets us listen to music while we

work, but if we get on his nerves or we don't do the work he’ll get very angry then he might talk to your parent/guardian or talk to Mr. McCoy about the child’s

behavior. Malachi says that God taught him how to draw. He attended ITT/Tech. He came in from Urban League 21st Century. He likes to spend time with his

family and draw. He has been in Vegas for 1 year and he says that he likes it here. His favorite color is blue. He doesn’t like teaching kids art. He’s good at

cooking, cleaning, building, creating, and coming up with solutions. He has only 1 child. His birthday is November 13. He is originally from Phoenix, Arizona.

He is married. He grew up in the projects and says it was fun growing up there.

I think Malachi is a great and cool person and I think he should continue doing art. When you are having one of those days he’s always there to give you

advice and cheer you up. Malachi is the best art teacher to ever teach me, a unique way to do draw pictures and other things.

“Don’t Pet Ms.Pettit!” By Chris C.

Do you love books? Ms.Pettit loves books, too! she been here at westprep for 4 years now and her 1st year teaching Read180.Sometimes she loves her job because some of her kids give her a migraine (if you know what I mean). She has a lot of posters in her classroom (portable) in order to let her kids know what they can read. One thing that seems weird to me is that she never asks for a raise. She had Read180 books for this year too.

The “Evil” Dean Reveals Good Side By Samantha S.

Are you afraid of the dean? If you are, you shouldn’t be. He is actually very nice. Dean Marentic is just trying make kids behave. The dean got the job by interviewing, but he taught at Canyons Spring High School as a band director. His assistants is Ms.Craney. He has her because he is so busy. Dean Marentic 's real job is making students follow the rules and behave. Yes, he loves his job! The dean just makes sure students behave.(Did you know the word “dean” comes from the term «decanus» meaning of "a leader of ten." . After dean's detention, he goes home about 4:30. So stay out of trouble and you will see the nice side of our dean.
