Singing his way back to Penrith

Known by some as “the voice of the people” as a judge on Channel Seven’s hit reality show ‘Dancing With The Stars’, but by most as ‘The

Boy from Oz’, singer-dancer Todd McKen-ney is back at the Evan Theatre in Penrith for the first time since 2013 performing some of Peter Allen’s biggest hits.

Speaking with West Life, the 49-year-old said he’s always had a special connection with Allen’s music, dating back a number of years.

“Peter Allen was the first live show I ever saw as a kid, I was around 14,” Todd revealed.

“Since then, I was lucky enough to be able to play him in ‘The Boy from Oz’ for three years and close to 1000 shows. I’ve kind of been synonymous with his music ever since 1998 when the show was first produced.”

As one of the first major Australian musicals, Todd believed ‘The Boy from Oz’ helped launch his career.

“It (‘The Boy from Oz’) was the first hugely successful Australian musical about an Australian, with all Australian content,” he said.

“It kind of put me on the theatrical map, so I guess I owe my career to the music of Peter Allen.

“It opened a lot of doors for me, defi-nitely.”

When Peter Allen died at the age of 48, fans, including Todd, were devastated.

“He died so young, and I think a lot of his fans agreed that he left us too soon, so after ‘The Boy from Oz’ I decided to keep his music alive,” Todd said.

Todd added just how rewarding sharing Peter Allen’s music and story had been.

“It’s been such a joy to sing his material, I absolutely love his music,” he said.

“The new show has a unique feel to it and I never do the same show twice.

“I like to keep it as a conversational sort of show. I encourage the audience to ask questions.”

While the show is based on the music of Peter Allen, Todd said conversation inevi-tably turns to ‘Dancing With The Stars’, where he has been a judge for 14 seasons.

“Audiences always want to know about the celebrities I’ve met on ‘Dancing With The Stars’ and the backstage goss on what Mark Holden’s really like,” he joked.

The Perth-born star said the show was a mix of singing, dancing and conversation.

JARROD GLASCOTT

FEATURE STORY

“I like to give my take on Peter Allen’s life but also, because his music opened so many doors for me, I talk about the rest of my career as well,” Todd said.

“It’s a very funny show. There’s some beautiful ballads but me, the band and the audience always have a good laugh.”

Todd spoke candidly about his time on Channel Seven’s hit show ‘Dancing With The Stars’ and being branded a tough judge.

“I try to be the voice of the people at home,” he said.

“I know people are sitting on the couch at home saying ‘that’s terrible’, so that’s exactly what I say. It’s all very tongue-in-cheek though.

“People sometimes forget that it’s a television show. It would be incredibly boring if all four judges sat there and said ‘you’re amazing darling’ to everyone, so I try to colour it up a bit.”

Having such an extensive background in both theatre and television, Todd said he doesn’t have a preference between the two forms.

“TV and theatre are so different, I enjoy them both in different ways,” he admitted to West Life.

“I think theatre is easier in that it’s easy to gauge how an audience is feeling, whereas on television you kind of have to wait until the next day when people are ripping you apart on social media to find out whether they liked you or not.”

Todd went on to say that, while he enjoys both, live theatre definitely has its benefits.

“It can be easier to give an honest performance on stage because you don’t have that wall of cameras and machinery between you and the audience,” he said.

Todd revealed his busy schedule for 2015, with a number of projects in the pipeline.

“I’m doing a musical for the majority of this year called ‘Anything Goes’, it’s a great tap dancing musical with a huge ensem-ble, so it’ll be great,” he said.

According to Todd, if there’s one thing audiences should take from his show, it’s the feeling of having just left an intimate dinner party rather than a theatrical performance.

“In a nutshell, I want the audience to feel as though they’ve met me, rather than just watched me perform,” he said.

Catch Todd McKenney in ‘Todd McKen-ney Sings Peter Allen’ at the Evan Theatre at Penrith Panthers on Friday, February 13. For ticketing information and show times, visit penrith.panthers.com.au, or club reception.

It kind of put me on the theatrical map, so I guess I owe my career to the music of Peter Allen

CHATTERON THE BOX

Channel Seven will unleash some of its

biggest shows after the Australian Open tennis, starting with ‘Home and Away’ and ‘My Kitchen Rules’. Both hit shows will premiere on Monday, February 2. ‘Home and Away’ will air its much-anticipated ‘The Rescue’ episode where at least one major character will die, while ‘MKR’ returns for its sixth season.

Channel Ten are teas-ing which celebrities

are to be included on ‘I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here’ by dropping these cryptic clues: a world famous televi-sion actress, an AFL Hall of Fame superstar, a four-time Olympian, a legendary Test cricketer, an international model, a fashion icon, a hot young comedian, kids’ TV star, Gold Logie nominee, TV Royalty. Any guesses?

Channel Ten has confirmed it will air

at least one new US talk show this year, that being ‘The Late Late Show with James Corden’. However, it appears unlikely it’ll air David Letterman’s replacement ‘The Late Show with Stephen Colbert’.

Fans of the old British comedy ‘Absolutely

Fabulous’ will be pleased to know that a movie isn’t far away. It’s been confirmed that star of the show Jennifer Saunders has finally finished the script. The film titled ‘Edina and Patsy’ could be released late 2015.

This one I didn’t see coming but ‘Today’

gossip reporter Richard Reid has quit the breakfast program after seven years. Reid was brilliant on ‘Today’ and his banter with Richard ‘Dickie’ Wilkins will certainly be missed. I do suspect he won’t be lost to Australian TV and will pop up somewhere.

Can’t say I’m a fan of this girl but DJ, model,

presenter, whatever she is – Ruby Rose – has scored herself an acting gig on the hit US show ‘Orange is the New Black’. Can’t say I’ve seen too much of her acting work but I’ll be intrigued to see how she pulls it off. The show airs on Foxtel.

This is the movie ‘Dumb and Dumber’ fans have been waiting for. And it’s been quite a wait, with the first movie hitting cinemas more than two decades ago. Of course there was the prequel ‘Dumb and Dumberer: When Harry Met Lloyd’ in 2003 but I’m sure many fans would rather forget that happened.

‘Dumb and Dumber To’ – no that’s not a typo – sees us reunite with the lovable idiots Harry Dunne (Jeff Daniels) and Lloyd Christmas (Jim Carrey). It’s been 20 years and Lloyd has spent the last few decades in a mental institution getting over his love for Mary Swanson, though it turns out his stint was actually the world’s longest practical joke.

Unfortunately Harry’s not doing so well either, his health’s failing and in his quest to find a kidney donor he discovers that his old girlfriend, Fraida Felcher, had a daughter and Harry is the father.

So the pair set out to find Harry’s daughter with plenty of crazy and hilarious antics along the way.

The film is once again written and directed by the Farrelly brothers and is out now!

After 2013’s comeback album ‘Save Rock and Roll’ Fall Out Boy are back with their sixth studio album ‘American Beauty/American Psycho’, which has been included in Billboard’s list of 30 Most Anticipated Albums of 2015.

The first single from the album is the ballsy rock anthem ‘Centuries’, which was followed up by the title track ‘American Beauty/American Psycho’, which is upbeat with a slight dance feel to it.

The third single ‘Uma Thurman’ was released in early Janu-ary. The track uses a sample of ‘The Munsters’ theme song and makes reference to Uma Thurman’s dance scene in ‘Pulp Fiction’. Of the tracks released so far ‘Uma Thurman’ is definitely a stand out, it’s fun and the inclusion of ‘The Munsters’ theme song gives it a cool touch.

Also included in the album is the track ‘Immortals’ which was featured in the 2014 Disney animation flick ‘Big Hero 6’.

Fall Out Boy’s sound may have evolved over the years, which always puts bands at risk of being deserted by long term fans, but for those happy to see the guys exploring new ground this album is definitely one to check out!

Captain Toad, the oh-so-cute character from the world of ‘Super Mario’, is off on his own for the first time in ‘Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker’. Though he may be a little slow and lacking in super powers, Captain Toad is not one to mess with as he sets off to find gold stars through maze-like stages with enemies after him at every turn.

Each stage will have a new puzzle to solve

along with hidden coins, gems and power-ups to be found.

With the help of the Wii U GamePad players can get a closer look at hidden items and any danger that may be lurking in the maze.

So far the game has been well received amongst critics, with a rating of 4 out of 5 stars on review website Metacritic.

This is sure to be another fun release for fans of the ‘Super Mario’ series.

‘The Boxtrolls’ is set in Cheesebridge, a lovely, posh Victorian-era town where cheese reigns supreme. Though the town’s folk live a peaceful existence they do have one problem that they can’t seem to solve, the Boxtrolls, a group of sewer dwelling ‘monsters’ that are hell bent on stealing children and cheese. Unfortunately the Boxtrolls are hugely misunderstood oddballs who just love wearing recycled cardboard boxes, and have raised an orphaned human boy as one of their own. This case of mistaken identity comes to a head when a villainous pest exterminator decides to rid the town of it’s ‘problem’. It will take the friendship of the orphaned human Boxtroll and an adventurous rich girl to bring the two worlds together. ‘The Boxtrolls’ features a host of famous voices including Ben Kingsley, Elle Fanning, Toni Collette and Simon Pegg.

‘The Boxtrolls’ is out now in all good DVD stores.

One mouthful of Al Aseel Penrith’s traditional Lebanese cuisine will send the diner’s taste buds on a whirlwind journey to the

Middle East. The meat is succulent, the hommos

superb and the mixed plates offer a combination of foods that could not be more perfectly paired.

But while the menu is extensive, filled with tantalising offerings from mansaf lamb to vine leaves with meat and even seafood, the atmosphere at the local restaurant is part of a reason why it has quickly become a favourite among local foodies.

Al Aseel Penrith has opened as the most recent in a chain of five family owned businesses across Sydney and has instantly developed a stellar reputation as a Lebanese restaurant of only the highest calibre.

The opening night, held on December 16, saw hundreds through the doors to experience the flavours of Lebanon.

Plate after plate of canapés reached the guests, who were left with their buttons bursting, unable to refuse a single option.

Each canapé, similar to the meals offered every day at the local restaurant, had an aroma that beckoned to the diner and the flavour was even better.

With each option better than the last, saying “no” was out of the question.

But those who attended were not just

treated to excellent food; the music was pumping, guests were dancing well into the evening and the atmosphere was second to none.

While the opening night was a special one, the vibrant nature of Al Aseel Penrith

has been maintained, with spontaneous performances by belly dancers dazzling diners as they sit down to their meals – dinner and a show has never been better defined.

With the food of only the best quality

and flavour plus the exceptional atmos-phere, sitting down for a meal at Al Aseel is never dull and is tipped to have even the toughest of critics crawling back for more.

Al Aseel, located at 62-72 Batt Street, Penrith, is open from 11am every day.

Al Aseel has Penrith talkingKatherine Tweed checked out the Penrith dining experience that’s got everyone talking, and she wasn’t disappointed...

Sydney’s Taronga Zoo is the place to be this summer with new additions to the animal family including two chimpanzee babies and a new

gorilla baby. Add to that Taronga’s Wild Ropes course and the Dinosaur Trail and there’s never been a better time to visit the zoo.

Mjukuu, the new baby gorilla, is part of Taronga’s conservation breeding program, and is seriously cute. If Dinosaurs are more your thing then you can check out Dinosaurs in the Wild which runs until Sunday, February 1 complete with 16 life-sized animatronic dinosaurs.

For the adventurers among us there’s the new Wild Ropes course that opened in December. The course gives visitors the chance to make their way along suspension bridges, rope climbs and zip lines while enjoying a unique view of the animals and the beautiful Sydney Harbour.

West Life has four family passes to Taronga Zoo to give away. For your chance to win one, email the code word ‘TARONGA’ to [email protected] with your name and contact details.

Entries close Wednesday, January 21. Authorised under NSW Permit Number LTPM/14/00047. Terms and conditions at www.westernweekender.com.au or Weekender reception.

HISTORYTurning back Time

Costing a whopping $2.5 million, Mike Walsh’s Hayden Twin Cinemas opened on the corner of Lawson and Henry Streets in Penrith on Friday, December 18, 1981.

The Hayden Twin, which enjoyed an incredibly rich history in the Penrith area for nearly 20 years, entertained thousands upon thousands of movie-goers with the latest flicks direct from Hollywood and around the world.

Whether it be 1993’s ‘Jurassic Park’, 1990’s ‘Home Alone’ or 1984’s ‘Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom’, Hayden certainly had it all.

However, the history of Hayden goes far deeper than the regular patron would’ve ever imagined. For example, did you know Mike Walsh, who was a Gold Logie winning television personality at the time, wanted to build the complex at the current Tattersalls Hotel site in High and Station Streets?

The plan revolved around the redevelop-ment of the Tattersalls Hotel, which was

also a business in Penrith decades ago, and was to include a two-floor tavern, ground floor arcade and twin cinema. It was esti-mated to cost $5 million to develop.

The twin theatre complex was set to open for business in November 1980, (presum-ably in time for the release of Robert De Niro’s hit ‘Raging Bull’) however in July of that year Walsh surprisingly pulled the pin on the multi-million dollar project.

It was reported at the time that Walsh was “not prepared to accept the terms of documentation and economical require-ments of the developers (Allen Holdings Pty Ltd)”.

However, the decision to scrap the plan made Walsh more determined than ever to provide first-class movie entertainment in Penrith and another site was sought.

That site ended up being the corner of Lawson and Henry Streets and, on November 4, 1980, Walsh announced it would construct a $2.5 million entertain-ment complex comprising of two “ultra-modern” cinemas with 1200 seats.

When Mike Walsh’s Hayden Twin Cinemas opened its doors on December 18, 1981, it was dubbed “Australia’s largest

twin theatre with the latest equipment”. It had a fully licensed bar, air conditioning, a Dolby sound system as well as the latest films.

However Hayden’s official gala charity opening, which saw more than 1000 people attend, wasn’t until February 20, 1982. Guests that day included NSW Premier Neville Wran, Julie Anthony, Graeme Blundell, Geoff Harvey, Ruth Cracknell, Brian Bury, and Jeannie and Barry Little.

Lawson Street was closed to traffic for the opening as festivities, such as perfor-mances by the Nepean Valley Brass and Penrith Pantherettes, took over the street.

“The west and Penrith, in particular, has three main centres of entertainment – the Q Theatre, the Lewers Regional Art Gallery and now the Hayden Twin Cinemas,” Mr Wran said.

In the first few months of operation, the Hayden Twin screened over 30 different films including ‘Mad Max 2’, ‘Raiders of the Lost Ark’, ‘Chariots of Fire’ and James Bond’s ‘For Your Eyes Only’.

Years later the popular complex had a name change to Hayden Theatres after the

twin cinemas were split into two creating four cinemas. A fifth, smaller cinema was also installed on an upper level of the building.

In June 1996, Hayden Theatres endured some off-screen drama after it proposed plans to extend and expand the cinema to a 10-screen complex.

It was reported at the time that Hayden’s original DA for an extension to its Lawson Street cinemas was lodged two years prior to Penrith Council but never progressed beyond negotiations.

However, after Lend Lease lodged its own DA for a 10-screen cinema complex for Penrith Plaza, which Council agreed to, Hayden weren’t happy and took the matter to the Land and Environment Court, to which Lend Lease re-submitted its DA.

Hayden company secretary Richard Hewitt told a local newspaper at the time that the extension would double the thea-tre’s 1100 seat capacity – giving it 400 more seats than the Plaza proposal.

In the end, Hoyts bought Hayden Thea-tres in 1998, selling the complex in 2000.

Today the site is home to Barratt & Smith.

KATHERINETWEED

FASHION

Bestdressed at the Golden Globes

this year definitely goes to the gorgeous

Emma Stone

[email protected]

@ktweed_

It is rare in life that we get to dress up in ball gowns and tuxedos, so when we get the chance to glam-up we’ve got to take the opportunity.

But in the meantime, at least we have award shows to give us a hit of high-glam.

I am all over award shows, not because I care about who is the best actor of the year or who had the most popular album, but because I absolutely love to judge the world’s celebrities on their red carpet attire.

I have been known to troll through red carpet photos for hours during the evening of or even-ing after an award show, just to rate the best dressed, worst dressed and sus out how the rest of the world felt about the fashions on the night in general.

At all these events, you’ll see a huge array of gowns and suits by the world’s most well known and popular designers, you’ll see gorgeous outfits, you’ll see disasters and you’ll see the select few who try to do something different.

The Golden Globes, held this week, were no different.

Below is my take on the best and worst dressed of the night, the trends that were picked up by the stars and the big no-nos of red carpet fashion.

Best dressed: I have to give this one to actress, Emma Stone, who decided to step away from the traditional gown and opt for fitted tailored trou-sers, a gorgeous beaded bodice and a floor-length sash around her waist.

I have to admit, it is hard to look glammed up in trousers but this woman nailed it, so I am giving her my tick of approval.

Here I also want to give a special mention to Katherine Heigl, for that amazing navy gown that I would love to get my hands on and Matthew

McConaughey for making that raggedy beard look hot – I don’t know how he does it!

Worst dressed: I was a little disappointed in the style at the Globes this year and there were a few that made me cringe but I actually couldn’t look at Keira Knightley.

I absolutely love Knightley as an actress and I know she’s pregnant and I know it was Chanel, but that dress? Not the time or the place. I felt like she had walked off the set of a movie where she was playing some kind of maid from the 1920s.

Best couple: This one has to go to George and Amal – can they get any more perfect?

Recurring colour: So, no one seems to listen to the critics when they say “don’t wear red on the

red carpet” but still, year after year you have celebrities blending in to the ground in floor-length red gowns.

I felt like I was seeing too much red at the Globes this year, with actresses like Catherine Zeta-Jones and Lena Dunham wearing the colour.

Finally, trend of the event: This has to go to plunging necklines. Kate Hudson, Jennifer Lopez, Sienna Miller, Katie Cassidy and Lana Del Rey were some of those who bared their skin at the event (some more than others) but I didn’t feel like any of them were dressed inappropriately, though Lana Del Rey was a close second for my ‘worst dressed’ award, she looked like the Little Mermaid!

The best and worst of the Golden Globes: Who got it right, who got it wrong and what was the key style?

JEWEL IN THE CROWN

MATTHEWELY

Happy New Year to you all! I hope you enjoyed some well-deserved rest and recu-

peration over the festive season. At York Jewellers we were extremely busy as usual during the Christmas period, which is how we like it!

I’ve got a few insider tips on what is going to be big this year, which I’ve comprised through seeing clients and watching market trends over the last few weeks.

I think we are going to see a lot more rose gold this year. We’ve made quite a few engagement rings and wedding bands in rose gold recently and I can see this continuing well into the New Year.

It’s a beautiful, warm tone and matches most skin types and designs. You can even use it as a small highlight in your piece of jewellery to give it a point of difference.

Speaking of engagement rings, oval diamonds have made a huge comeback of late. I’m seeing a lot of ladies choosing an oval shape diamond over the cushion cut which, until recently, took pole position of the most popular shape.

Ovals tend to look quite large for their weight but do keep an eye out for any sign of a ‘bowtie’, which can appear like an X through the centre of the stone. This is considered undesirable and can detract from the overall sparkle, which is something we don’t want.

The halo design for engagement rings is also still a very popular design. No matter what shape you go for it will add that extra wow factor to your engagement ring! It can also give you a larger look for less.

On another note, we are in the last days of our big sale in store. There are huge savings on most items ranging from pearls, to coloured gemstones, wide diamond dress rings and even selected engagement rings. If you’re thinking of popping the question soon, now is the time to start looking!

I’d also like to take a quick moment to congratulate the winners of our ‘12 Gifts of Christmas’ giveaway.

Thank you for choosing York Jewellers as your choice for quality jewellery and service in Penrith, here’s to another amazing year for us all in 2015!

See you next week.

Happy New Year! What’s hot in 2015?

The New Moon’s in Aquarius, so you’ll feel super inventive as you launch pet projects and plan adventures. But, if someone ap-

proaches you with a financial deal that looks too good to be true, start running in the opposite direction! If you let yourself be sweet-talked by a smooth operator, you’ll just end up making a messy mistake.

AQUARIUS JANUARY 21 TO FEBRUARY 19

Confusion reigns supreme this week, as Mars and Neptune hook up in your sign, and then the New Moon and retro Mercury stir

up your self-sabotage zone. It will be very easy to lose direction and de-lude yourself or be led up the primrose path to trouble by a persuasive person with dubious motives.

PISCES FEBRUARY 20 TO MARCH 20

With your constantly heated emotions, you can be a real hot-head. This week Mars links up with Neptune, which will hose

down some of your fiery temperament. You’ll feel less frantic but you’ll also feel much more confused. Double-check all texts, tweets and emails before you press send, to avoid some sticky situations.

ARIES MARCH 21 TO APRIL 20

Don’t get bogged down in a career-rut Bulls. Have you lost your professional passion? Are you overdue for a pay rise or a

promotion? Is it time to look for a better job or even change vocation? If you are retired, how about taking up a volunteering opportunity with a worthy local cause? You have many specialised skills to share.

TAURUS APRIL 21 TO MAY 21

Being a scatter-brain will just lead to a plethora of problems this week. You’re in the mood to study and learn but avoid

jumping to half-baked conclusions. Instead, think things through be-fore you make a major move. Overseas friendships are favoured, as you expand your peer group to include an international new crowd. But re-sist the temptation to spread garrulous gossip and rumours.

GEMINI MAY 22 TO JUNE 21

Close relationships are put under the microscope, and you’re keen to show your nearest and dearest how much you care.

Avoid being overprotective though, loved ones need room to breathe and there’s a big difference between loving and smothering. With Ju-piter in your money zone, your financial position will improve in some way between now and July.

CANCER JUNE 22 TO JULY 22

Leos love to be leaders but are you leading others or just boss-ing them around? This week, if you proceed without consid-

ering others, then you’ll stir up unnecessary angst. So strive to accom-modate the needs of those around you. Some love-crazy Lions will launch a new romantic relationship or rejuvenate an old one.

LEO JULY 23 TO AUGUST 23

The New Moon gets you thinking about rebooting your daily schedule, as you shake things up and rejig your usual rou-

tine. Mercury turns retrograde mid-week, so avoid signing contracts and buying big ticket items until after February 11. Plus turn your atten-tion to health, diet and exercise.

VIRGO AUGUST 24 TO SEPTEMBER 23

Your party-loving social side is stimulated, as the New Moon fires up your entertainment zone. But a relationship with a

child, teenager or friend may go through a bumpy patch over the next three weeks, when retro Mercury confuses communication and height-ens sensitivities. A dash of diplomacy will get you through.

LIBRA SEPTEMBER 24 TO OCTOBER 23

The New Moon moves through your domestic zone so it’s time to spruce up Casa Scorpio as you clean, tidy, de-clutter and dec-

orate home and hearth. But, with retro Mercury also there, relations with relatives will be a minefield over the next three weeks. So pick your battles carefully and choose your words wisely!

SCORPIO OCTOBER 24 TO NOVEMBER 22

Sagittarians are usually incredibly optimistic souls but with Sat-urn now moving slowly through your sign (until 2017), your life

at the moment may not be as light-hearted as you’d like. That’s OK! The purpose of obstacles and challenges is to help you develop and mature (like a fine red wine). Just make sure you approach all decisions and sit-uations carefully.

SAGITTARIUS NOVEMBER 23 TO DECEMBER 21

Expect some confusion involving social media, siblings, neigh-bours or local community connections. Don’t accept other peo-

ple’s version of events, take the time to check things thoroughly your-self. Friday’s Sun/Saturn link up is perfect for finalising professional jobs or making progress with personal projects. You’re in a focused state of mind and have a strong sense of self-discipline.

MONEY

ANTHONYWALKEROwner-Manager Bank of [email protected]

Planning a wedding can be one of the most exciting times of your life. Booking the caterers, sending out invites and picking out the perfect dress or suit are just a few of the many important tasks you need to complete before the big day.

While money can’t buy you happiness, it is a vital element in marital bliss. In fact, a survey from Money Magazine found that an incredible 70 per cent of married couples admit to fighting about money.

For richer or poorer: While it may not be the most pleasant conversation, airing your money woes now will save a lot of heartache in the future. If you have debts or trouble spending money, now is the time to tell your partner and vice versa.

Any debts you or your future spouse have will quickly become a joint problem if you were to co-sign on a home loan, take out a credit card or attempt to set up a couple’s bank account.

If there are debts to take care of, you can potentially ease the burden by taking out a consolidation loan. By combining your loans and finances, it will be easier to track your repayments and you may find your joint incomes make it even easier to clear those debts.

Coming together in matri-money: Before signing the marriage certificate on the dotted line, you need to decide whether you and your partner are going all in. Will you join your personal finances together completely, keep them totally separate, or pick and choose the best bits?

Opening a joint bank account is a great way to combine expenses and start purchasing things as a couple. This will give the convenience of a single source to help pay your bills, take care of mortgage repayments and other financial commitments.

Spending (or saving) your lives together: What are your spending habits? Does money burn a hole in your pocket or are you more likely to hoard more treasure?

Your money personality says a lot about you as a person, and it’s important that your partner’s money-habits are compat-ible with your own. If you were a big spender and your spouse preferred hoarding, this could cause arguments about the best way to deal with incoming cash.

Is your marriage money compatible?

Moneyis often a huge issue when it

comes to getting married. Your debts become a

joint issue!

FITEC FITNESS CHAMPION

Fitec is the Fitness Industry Training & Education Centre. It’s where the trainers get their training! As part of raising awareness and promot-ing it in our community, we present the Fitec Fitness Champion! Each week we will interview someone who has successfully made health and fitness an integral part of their life...

BROUGHT TO YOU BY

How does fitness feature in your life? After years of playing football profession-

ally and way too many injuries, I decided to give it up. I had always promised myself that I would play only if it didn’t interfere with my life outside of football. After breaking my arm and not being able to work and train, I’d had enough.

It was then I discovered CrossFit. It was a perfect environment for me as a competi-tive person. I have learnt a lot about what ‘functional training’ can do for your health and fitness.

It also uncovered my passion for coaching. I completed my CrossFit Level 1 trainers course and started coaching. I also began my Cert III and IV in Fitness/Personal Training.

Today I am training hard, competing regu-larly and chipping away at my goals.

Top 3 tips for good health?1. Eat clean: Eat real food that will nourish

your body. Eating bad all the time is not worth the horrible symptoms that comes with it.

2. Train regularly: Even if your goal is small, just move. Training and moving, along with a good diet, will help with motivation and regulating your metabo-lism.

3. Rest: Rest is just as important as train-ing. I like to use the rule ‘rest as hard as you train’. Recovery plays a huge part in growth and progression. Every time you exercise, you are causing ‘trauma’ in your muscles, therefore to grow, you

need to ‘feed’ the muscle and let it repair.

A daily must do?Stretch and mobilise. Even on your rest

days, spend as much time as you can on stretching and lengthening your muscles.

If you don’t stretch post training, your muscles will become tight and short, making functional movement and good form very difficult

Biggest health/fitness misconception? For active people, some think that the

more you train and the longer you train, the better!

This is a huge misconception. There is such a thing as over training.

When you over train, your body releases a hormone called cortisol and although it is essential, in high levels, is detrimental to muscle and bone health among a number of other serious health issues. Rest is neces-sary.

What do you consider the biggest benefit of being fit and healthy?

I love to be able to take on any physical challenge the day might offer. My job is very physical and so is my lifestyle. I couldn’t imagine feeling any other way.

What type of activity/exercise do you enjoy the most?

My favourite type of workout is endurance based. I enjoy long drawn out WODs the best because I feel I can set a pace and stick to it comfortably.

How do you stay motivated when it’s so easy to just ‘take it easy’?

Most of all, I hate losing. I have a strong competitive side that has transferred from football, so CrossFit is a perfect environ-ment for me.

At the box I train at, our coach is always setting us workouts that constantly chal-lenge us mentally and physically so it’s hard not to be motivated to get stronger, fitter and always improve.

If I could pass on one piece of advice, it would be this:

Eat, train and live a lifestyle that promotes health and longevity.

Don’t look for ‘quick fixes’ for weight loss. The best thing I learnt was that a permanent lifestyle change is the only thing that can maintain good health and fitness.

Life is just better without obstacles caused by poor health and injuries.

Enjoy being healthy!

I couldn’t imagine living any other way

KEIRAN EDWARDS

DAVID STEINOwner & Manager of Fitec

So how is everybody’s New Year goals going? Some people find it hard to get motivated without a huge

goal to aim for. There’s an old saying which goes something like this: “If you

can’t find time for exercise then you’re going to have to find time to be sick”.

So what is an important goal? Sure, winning a gold medal for Australia is important, but

what if I ask an elderly grandma how important getting out of the house to see the new grandkid is? Is that just as important? I guess it comes down to who you ask!

Sometimes we can struggle for motivation when we don’t have a clear cut goal, like winning an event or looking good for our wedding day. But if you stop and think about it, every single one of us has something that is high on our priority list that requires us to be healthy to be able to do it.

In fact, think of three things right now that you value highly. How would being sick in bed affect your ability to be able to participate in any of them?

I teach people health and fitness courses, and how to be a personal trainer. Increasingly I get people ringing up saying ‘I want to do the course just for myself, is that ok’? or ‘I’m not 20 anymore is it still worth doing?’.

I have worked with eight-year-olds to 80-year-olds, I am yet to sit down with one who doesn’t think their health was important. So never think any health goal isn’t important!

We get a bit of leeway when we’re young and get away with letting our health sit way down the priority list. But health has a way of putting itself at the top of your priority list whether you’re ready or not.

You will spend time on it next week or next year, there is no choice.

But you can choose how you will spend that time!Whether it’s stuck at home recovering from illness, missing

a party you really wanted to go to? Or will you spend the time running the dog down the river and spending time with the family on some good home cooking?

Get going!

Looking after your health isn’t a choice

HEALTH

Yourhealth gets

more and more important as you get older.

Lenny has a particular affinity for destroying tennis balls, a skill which he now manages in mere minutes, according to Ms Greenup, Lenny’s owner.

“He also loves sleeping in our bed, but only if he can sneak under the covers in time,” she said.

He loves exploring in the garden and being cheeky trying to steal people’s food whenever he can.

Lenny dislikes any sort of water, when his owners leave him to go to work and when he doesn’t get con-stant attention.

“He often gets chased by much big-ger dogs at the park and he hates it!” said Ms Greenup.

When asked what Lenny’s weirdest habit was, Ms Greenup said Lenny has an interesting method of relaxation.

“Lenny’s weirdest habit is lying on top of tennis balls and moving side to side in order to massage his back,” Ms Greenup said.

NICOLE MCMILLAN

REV JOHN LAVENDER

As the weather heats up, the risk of heat stress in pets rises. Heat stress is a syndrome that occurs when an animal’s body temperature exceeds 40 degrees and this will damage the blood clotting function.

Death occurs from shock, internal bleeding and organ failure. Cats and Dogs are very different to humans because they cannot sweat from their skin.

In humans, air circulating past sweaty skin cools the blood internally, so a person can still function on a 45 degree day.

Dogs and Cats only sweat through their foot pads, and with their bodies covered in fur, they cannot easily cool down. Animals will pant to try and cool their internal body temperature but this is not very effective in extreme weather conditions.

As with children, DO NOT leave pets in cars, even briefly, espe-cially in the summer months.

The internal temperature of a car can rapidly reach extreme temperatures greater than 50 degrees.

Commonly I see people jogging with their dogs on a hot day. Exercise naturally heats a dog and they cannot cool well when the ambient temperature is warm. NEVER LET A DOG DO STRENUOUS EXERCISE WHEN THE TEMPERATURE IS ABOVE 25 DEGREES. It is sensible to only exercise dogs early in the morning, or in the cool of evening during our summer months.

If extreme temperatures are predicted, then providing areas of shade or the cool of under the house will help. When tempera-tures greater than 40 degrees are predicted, leaving pets indoors with air conditioning is the best option. If this is not possible, then you can provide a child’s wading pool or plastic shell (left in a shady area) with only a few centimetres of water for dogs to lie in. Freezing water filled plastic bottles and placing them at the bottom of pet beds can also help cool down resting pets.

You can provide ice blocks to entertain and cool a pet in the summer months. A large ice block may last for some hours. This can be made by freezing a four litre ice-cream container and then placing the ice block outside in the dog’s drinking bowl for them to lick as it melts. It is even more fun if some dried liver treats are frozen in the ice-block.

Hot summer days aren’t good for our pets

New Year’s resolutions! Are they worth it or are they simply something that people make for fun? While some people might not take New Year’s resolutions seriously, behind each resolution there is often a frustration and a desire to get life right. Many people are looking for new directions in life. They want to change the way they are living, but where do you look for new directions? Where do you look for a life that is satisfying? A life that can be counted on to give meaning and fulfilment?

The last book of the Bible, Revelation, contains an extraor-dinary promise for anyone who would commit their life to the God who is there by following His Son, Jesus; “Now the dwelling of God is with men and he will live them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.” He who was seated on the throne said, “I am making everything new!” Then he said, “Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.”

This glorious promise of making everything new, of removing the old order of things, points to two truths. Firstly, it is a promise of the confident hope and joy of heaven. Secondly, it is promise, testified to by the experi-ence of Christian people throughout the centuries, of the transformation that Jesus can bring to your life as you trust him day by day.

Happy New Year and may you know the new life that Jesus brings.

2015’s first Australian coin honours the centenary of the ANZAC legend and the people who were involved

in that particular part of Australia’s history.

The Royal Australian Mint’s coin design-ers have worked alongside the Australian War Memorial to design and create the coin, which will be part of the Mint’s Official ANZAC Centenary Coin Program and will be displayed in the Mint’s public gallery press.

“The 2015 $1 ‘C’ Mintmark Uncirculated Coin – ANZAC Centenary is the first coin released for the year when we will mark 100 years since Gallipoli. The Mint takes its role as a chronicler of Australian stories very seriously, in particular when commemorating our role in the First World War,” Mint CEO, Ross MacDiarmid said.

“We are proud to continue to craft coins which share the stories of Australians in war, conflict and peacekeeping, through treasures which will be cherished and handed down for generations to come.”

Depicted on the coin’s surface are Australian soldiers and a bugler, who are standing in the foreground, and behind them is the Gallipoli coastline.

Symbolising and commemorating those who fell at Gallipoli is a cross.

The coin, retailing for $3, is only avail-able by visiting the Mint in Canberra.

“Not only does this provide visitors to the Mint with a memento of Canberra and their visit, it also provides the oppor-tunity for the general public to share in a piece of ANZAC Centenary history,” Mr MacDiarmid said.

Other coins in the ANZAC Centenary line are available on the Mint’s e-shop www.eshop.ramint.gov.au

It’s time to nominate an impressive senior for the 2015 NSW Seniors Local Achievement Awards, which is

celebrating its second year at showcasing their importance in the community.

Stuart Ayres, Member for Penrith, joined Minister for Ageing John Ajaka in encouraging the nominations, which aim to highlight the enormous contributions older Australians make to their local community.

“We are inviting anyone who knows a

senior who deserves recognition for their role in the community to nominate them for an award,” Mr Ajaka said.

“Each local community now has a platform to show their recognition for the talents, skills and generosity of this impressive group.”

Mr Ayres said the awards showcase the extensive amount of talent there is among seniors in the local community.

“We are calling on people to nominate seniors who make a difference to their local community,” he said.

Nominations are now open until Friday, February 20. Forms can be accessed by visiting www.stuartayres.com.au.
