Warm up Winter with a Good
Read! Come check out our Decem-ber and January winter themed book display, “Warm Up Winter with a Good Read”!
Read an Abe, Win an Abe! November’s winner of Read an Abe, Win an Abe was Brenna Poncin. She read Stolen by Lucy Christopher and stated “Of the Abe nominees that I’ve read so far, I thought Stolen was the best! I highly recommend it!”
Reading and Research The IMC has been busy this semester promot-ing reading through our FMP month-ly visits and FMP reading contest, book talking and book shopping with English classes, and holding another successful book fair. Classes have also been busy researching in the IMC. To highlight just a few of these: Mrs. Wiist’s RWS classes have been in the IMC researching modern Europe (1815-present) for the History Fair Exhibit, Ms. Marvin and Ms. Dinges classes recently researched the Russian Revo-
Now that you’ll have some time to relax, come to the IMC and check out a book to read over Winter Break! I’ll also have books displayed for you on tables to check out as well. Here are just a few reading recommendations. Unbroken : a World War II story of survival, resilience, and redemption by Laura Hillenbrand One of my personal favorites! It’s a biography of Olympic runner and World War II bombardier, Louis Zamperini, who had been a trouble-maker in his youth and then found an outlet in track. He eventually served in the military, which led to his plane being shot down in the middle of the Pacific Ocean and his struggle to sur-vive on the open ocean and then in a Japanese POW camp. You won’t be able to put in down!
The Other Wes Moore by Wes Moore Two kids with the same name lived in the same decaying city. One went on to be a Rhodes Scholar, decorated combat veteran, White House Fellow, and busi-ness leader. The other is serving a life sentence in prison. Here is the story of two boys and the journey of a genera-tion. Moore will present The Other Wes Moore for the annual Martin Luther King Jr. Dinner at 6 p.m. Friday, Jan. 23, in the Brown Ballroom of the Bone Student Center. You can find out more here. We Were Liars by E. Lockhart Cadence Sinclair Easton comes from a wealthy family. Her grandfather owns a private island off of Cape Cod and every summer her family gathers at the vari-ous houses on the island. Cadence and her cousins have been inseparable since age eight. During their fifteenth sum-mer however, Cadence suffers a myste-rious accident. She spends the next two
years in a haze of amnesia, migraines, and painkillers, trying to piece together just what happened. The ending has a shocking twist that most won’t see it coming! The 5th Wave by Rick Yancey This is a favorite among our students this year. Summary—Cassie has sur-vived four waves of alien invasion which has killed the majority of the world’s population. Determined to save her little brother, Cassie must place her trust in Evan Walker who may be her only hope for rescuing her brother--or even saving herself. Top 5 books checked out by our students so far this year: 1. Altered by Jennifer Rush 2. The 5th Wave by Rick Yancey 3. The Selection by Kiera Cass 4. Winger by Andrew Smith 5. Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand Check out YALSA’s Teens Top Ten
