Erica &

RawsonSurrounded by rolling green hills and picturesque valleys, the villages of Erica and Rawson provide modern amenities and a choice of activities in all seasons.Situated just 15 minutes from Walhalla Historic Township, both Erica and Rawson are excellent bases to explore this iconic destination. With a strong heritage as a mountain timber town, Erica is the gateway to the Walhalla & Mountain Rivers region. It’s also the place to pick up all your snow play essentials such as wheel chains (which are required by law), cross country skis, snow shoes and toboggans. Established by workers on the Thomson Dam, Rawson is now a modern village with its own mountain retreat and spa chalets.Appreciate the magnificent vistas across to Mt Erica and the Baw Baw Plateau while you take in the many natural and man-made attractions such as Moondarra Reservoir, Thomson Dam, Mushroom Rocks, the Beech Forest Walk and the Erica to Thomson Station Rail Trail. Featuring tall forests and views of the Thomson River, this rail trail follows part of the route of the former narrow gauge railway that once operated from Moe to Walhalla.

WalhallaA beautiful village nestled in a steep-sided valley, Walhalla is a hidden gem that shines with all the charm of times gone by.Walhalla is home to only a handful of permanent residents, a picturesque mountain hamlet that was once one of Australia’s richest gold towns. Operating between 1865 and 1914, Walhalla’s Long Tunnel Mine was Victoria’s most profitable mine, making this mountain outpost home to a wealthy and vibrant community with 15 hotels, 40 shops, two breweries, seven churches, a school with over 500 students and its own newspaper. Virtually untouched by time for almost all of the 20th century, it wasn’t until 1998 that electricity was connected!Take a ride on the Walhalla Goldfields Railway to enjoy the beautiful and rugged Stringers Creek Gorge, and marvel at the natural brilliance of the vibrant autumn trees and bright spring wildflowers. The Walhalla Goldfields Railway operates trains on Wednesdays, weekends, public holidays and school holidays along a restored section of the line from Thomson to Walhalla. Many of Walhalla’s buildings have been lovingly restored or recreated to preserve the past. Be sure to take in the Corner Store Museum, the Old Fire Station, the Mountaineer Brass Band Rotunda, the Bank Vault, the original Post and Telegraph Office, St John’s Church and Walhalla’s unique hillside cemetery. For something a little spooky, search for the grave with a curse, or better yet book yourself in for a ghost tour after nightfall. The valley’s late-rising mist lingers, a spectacular sight as the setting sun breaks through, adding to the atmospheric beauty of Walhalla.
