The 2017 regular season comes to a close on Saturday with the whole season on the line between two teams who have had a solid year up until this point. The West Georgia Wolves come into the game in the thick of the race to the playoffs, ranked fourth in the most recent regional poll. West Florida has an impressive resume and currently sits in 10th place in the region. For West Georgia, a win would be another positive step toward hosting in this year’s playoffs, but a loss could potentially put the Wolves out. The Argos are currently on the outside looking in, but a win against a ranked opponent could be just the ticket to a playoff bid in just their second year of Division II play. LAST WEEK West Georgia moved to 8-2 last week with a dramatic victory over Florida Tech, with junior cornerback Jakyron Young intercepting a Mark Cato pass with 42 seconds left in the game and taking it in for a touchdown, giving the Wolves a 20-13 victory. West Florida handled North Alabama last week, winning 30-7 in the GSC-TV Live Game of the Week. THE COACHES West Georgia is coached by Gulf South Conference veteran David Dean, who is in his first season at the helm of the UWG program. This is his 10th season as a head coach, as he spent nine years at Valdosta State until the 2015 season. Dean is 8-2 at West Georgia and has a record of 87-29 overall as a head coach. Pete Shinnick is the head coach of the Argos, and is 11-9 in two seasons of Division II play with the Argos. DEFENSE WINS CHAMPIONSHIPS West Georgia’s defense seems to be hitting it’s stride at the perfect time, as the Wolves have give up just 24 first downs in the past three weeks and a grand total of 501 total yards in that same span. In addition, the Wolves have allowed just three offensive touchdowns in that span, with the opponent needing to drive a total of 26 yards on two of the three scoring drives. ROLAND SNAGS A BIG GAME Senior receiver Shaq Roland has been the Wolves’ leading receiver throughout the year, and has had at least four receptions in seven of West Georgia’s 10 games in 2017. He has had at least 50 receiving yards in six of those, with last week’s 12-catch, 122-yard performance at the top of the ist. He has had three games with at least 70 yards recieving and leads the team with four touchdown receptions. Head Coach David DeanIn late January the University of West Georgia was faced with the task of filling a vacancy as head football coach. The job wasn’t vacant very long. David Dean was available; ready, willing, and eager to become UWG’s 11th head football coach of the modern era. Dean brings a resume to the UWG post that rivals almost any coach in the nation, at any level. Dean is this season entering his 30th season in the coaching pro-fession, his ninth at West Georgia. There is one common thread to his 29 previous seasons: David Dean is a winner. The former wide receiver at Georgia Tech was a key staff member at Valdosta State from 1988-1991. He next spent eight seasons on the staff at UWG, an era that saw the program experience a large number of firsts. That includes the first winning season at the Division II level, the first NCAA D-II Playoff berth, and the program’s first two Gulf South Conference titles. Dean departed UWG following the 1999 season, joining the staff of Chris Hatcher at Valdosta Sate. He spent seven seasons as the Blazers’ offensive coordina-tor, a run that included the 2004 NCAA Division II Championship. In 2007 Dean ascended to the head coaching post at VSU. He had to assemble a coaching staff almost from the ground up as all but one fellow staff member moved on. The results were positive as Valdosta State posted a 13-1 and won the program’s second national championship. Five years later, Dean was back in the winner’s circle again. This time the Blazers lost twice in the regular season, but they were untouchable in the playoffs, averaging 42 points a game during a postseason run to a second national title. How rare is a second national championship? Consider that college foot-ball has been played in the state of Georgia since the 1890s. During that time only three football coaches in the state have won multiple national titles. Erskine Russell won three FCS title at Georgia Southern, while Paul Johnson followed him in States-boro with a pair of crowns of his own. The other coach on that very exclusive list is David Dean. Dean’s run as head coach at Valdosta State covered nine seasons. Beyond the two national crowns, his Blazer teams posted an impressive record of 79-27, including a mark of 42-19 in games played with the nation’s best Division II confer-ence, the Gulf South. His teams advanced to the NCAA Playoffs six times, and Dean’s postseason head coaching record is 12-4. The success of Dean’s Valdosta State program resulted in numerous indi-vidual plaudits. He captured American Football Coaches Association Division II Coach of the Year honors following both national titles. He was also named 2007 Coach of the Year by Schutt Sports, AFCA Regional Coach of the Year, and GSC Coach of the Year in 2010. Beyond his individual success, Dean’s VSU players captured the highest of honors. His VSU teams had 18 Division II All-America selections, while 10 players signed National Football League contracts. Dean also coached three players who earned GSC Freshman of the Year honors, two league players of the year, and one national defensive player of the year. Clearly, David Dean has been linked to success throughout his 30-year coaching career. At UWG or at UWG’s biggest rival, the results are irrefutable: David Dean is a winner. His teams win and his program flourishes. As Dean begins his first season at UWG, he is following the most suc-cessful three-year run in the history of the Wolves’ program. Few coaches have the gravitas to continue, and even increase that level of success. Dean is a native of DeKalb County in the metro Atlanta area. He was born in Decatur, and enjoyed a stellar high school career for the Avondale Blue Devils. Dean arrived at Georgia Tech as a walk-on in 1982, but was awarded a scholarship the following season. He played wide receiver for the Jackets through the 1985 cam-paign. Married to the former Stacie Stott, the Deans have three daughters: Caro-line (20), Allison (18), and Natalie (12).

Wolves At A GlAnceWest Georgia is a team that is among the best in the nation in multiple offensive and defensive categories, but very few players are ranked nationally, especially n the defensive side of the ball. Sophomore quarterback Willie Candler continues to impress, leading the GSC in efficiency rating by a large margin, coming into Week 11 with a rating of 154.1 on the year. Running back Devontae Jackson is one of the top All-Purpose players in the nation, and is a 4,000-yard career man at UWG. He averages 144.5 All-Purpose yards on the year, which leads the Gulf South Conference by more than 30 yards. On the defensive side of the ball sophomore Chad Price is fourth in the GSC in tackles for a loss, averaging 1.05 per game thus far. In overall tackles, Cam Magee leads the way for the Wolves with 60 stops, including 24 solo tackles this season and one interception.

ArGos At A GlAnceWest Florida is a dangerous team, and proved as much this past week against North Alabama, a team that has been down this year, but still featured a solid defense. The Argos allowed just 129 yards of offense to the Lions and had 355 yards against a tough UNA defense. Freshman quarterback Mike Beaudry continues to turn heads in the GSC, and after a 194-yard effort against North Alabama, earned his third Gulf South Con-frence Freshman of the Week award. Three different running backs will get carries, led by sophomore Chris Schwaz, who has 392 yards on the year, but has lost just three total yards this season. He is the team leader in rushing touchdowns with four in 2017. Senior linebacker Reggie Barnes leads the way defensively with 68 tackles on the year, and John Williamson is one to wathc, as he has 6.5 sacks this season. The Argos have picked off 10 passes, led by Marvin Conley with three.

This Week in the GSC The final week of the regular season rolls in with four conference games among GSC schools and one non-con-ference contest. West Alabama sealed their title as 2017 GSC Champions with a win over Valdosta State last week, and will look to stay in step with the region rankings against North Greenville this weekend. The game with the most on the line for both teams will be in Carrollton, Ga. at 2 p.m. (EST) this weekend, as the West Georgia Wolves host the West Florida Argonauts. This is the only matchup featuring two regionally ranked opponents this week. A win for the Wolves would poten-tially mean a home game in the first round of the playoffs, while a win for UWF could put them in the playoffs. Mississippi College travels to Florence, Ala., for the final Division II football game in the storied history of the North Alabama program. That game kicks off from Braly Memorial Stadium at 1:30 p.m. Valdosta State will close out the 2017 season in Rome, Ga., taking on the Shorter Hawks, and with a 4-4 record, the Blazers will likely miss out on the playoffs for the first time since 2013 and just the third time since 2010. Delta State will look to hang on to the seventh seed in this year’s playoffs, hosting Florida Tech in Cleveland, Miss. at 3 p.m. Saturday.

The Top of the LeagueWith another stellar defensive performance this past week, the West Georgia Wolves continue to be the top defensive team in the Gulf South Conference and are among the best in the nation in 2017. The Wolves lead the GSC in scorng, total, and passing defense, and are second in rushing defense. In passing yards, allowed, West Georgia’s allowance of 139.8 is good for second in the nation, while the 268.8 total yards allowed this year is good for seventh nationally.

Less than 250Dominance could be one word used to describe the West Georgia defensive effort over the past three weeks, as the Wolves have allowed just 501 total yards in that span. When yards are difficult to come by, it makes getting a first down nearly impossible. Against Mississippi College three weeks ago, the Wolves allowed a meager three first downs in the contest that was shortened due to lightning. Against Florida Tech this past week, the Wolves allowed just seven first downs to a high-powered FIT offensive impact. One play, a 45-yard rush on the final play of the game against Shorter, was the difference in 501 yards and just over 450. On that play, Lemuel Cobbs rushed for 45 yards, but a penalty allowed for a 10-second runoff and the game concluded.

Gardenhire Continues StrengthRedshirt freshman defensive end Deandre Gardenhire has started the first three games of the season, winning GSC Freshman of the Week in Week 1, and having a sol-id season thus far. He was instrumental in West Georgia building a 14-0 lead early in the game against North

Alabama. The Camden County native had two sacks early in the game, and one of those also gave the freshman a forced fumble and a fumble recovery, setting up the Wolves’ second touchdown of the day.

Pardue vs. MageeTwo hard-hitting defenders are in a race to see who will lead the Wolves this season in tackles, as junior safety Montrell Pardue and junior linebacker Cam Magee have been trading the team lead in tackles for the past few weeks. Against North Alabama, Magee was named GSC Defensive Player of the Week with 10 tackles and an interception, but has had his share of success as well and is currently leading the Wolves in tackles with 55. His best night was 12 tackles at Delta State and he has 5.5 tackles for a loss on the year.

Pick-6 Back-to-BackThe West Georgia secondary has been solid this season, allowing the second-least amount of yards per game in all of NCAA Division II football this season thus far. But in the past two weeks, the defense has chipped in offensively as well, as two different players have gotten an intercption and returned it for a touchdown in the past two weeks. Senior Zed Brown had a 58-yard interception return for a touchdown against Shorter two weeks ago, the fourth of his

career. That sets a new UWG record for intercep-tions returned for a touchdown in his career. This past week, Jakyron Young moved to the top of the Wolves’ interception numbers on the year, picking off his second pass of the season and returning it for a touchdown. The interception was the second of Young’s official career.

UWG Defense in the NCAAWest Georgia is ranked in the top-11 in the nation in four different categories, led by the passing yards allowed of 139.8, which is good for 2nd in the nation. The Wolves allowed 13.8 points per game, which in eighth nationally, followed by 268.8 yards per game, which is 7th is 10th. UWG’s team passing efficiency on defense is also stellar at 97.58, good for 13th in Division II Football.

Under 250Nine games into the 2017 season and the UWG de-fense has been fairly spectacular for much of the year. Including last Saturday’s performance, the Wolves have had four times this year where the defense has held the opponent to 275 or less yards. There have been 18 moments like that since defensive coordina-tor Scott Symons took over in 2014. But none were as dominant as the effort against Mississippi College, where the Wolves allowed just 93 yards. Diving deeper in to the stats shows that the Wolves allowed just three first downs in the contest and had four sacks. Mississippi College was 0-for-11 on third down conversions in the game.

Jackson on the MoveWith Travis Custis out for the year, junior running back Devontae Jackson has stepped into the limelight and is quickly becoming one of the most dangerous triple-threat backs in the nation. Thus far on the year, Jackson has 1,445 all-purpose yards, including 94 rush-ing yards last week at Florida Tech. He has rushed for 100 yards three times this season, and had one of the biggest individual all-purpose games in school history against West Alabama, going for 373 all-purpose yards in the contest.

Candler in the NCAASophomore quarterback Willie Candler has placed himself among the elite quarterbacks in the nation this season, as he is in the top-50 nationally in nine different statistical categories, including top-25 inthree different categories. He is 25th in the nation in yards per pass attempt at 8.41, then 25th in passing efficiency with a rating of 154.1. He is 17the in completion percentage, completing passes at a .653 clip.

Wiggins Stays ConsistentWhile freshman kicker Trey Wiggins earned recogni-tion as the GSC Freshman of the Week in the second week of the season, he has just recently begun to come into his own as a kicker, as he continues to kick from longer distance each week. Against North Alabama, the freshman from nearby Heard County nailed a 35-yard field goal, the longest of his career thus far. He is tied for 32nd nationally in field goal percentage at .750 and is 9-for-12 on field goals this year. With extra points, he s 42-of-43 on the season and has had at least six PATs in four different games. . A Potent Return GameWest Georgia’s return game continues to move up in the national rankings, especially after Devontae Jack-son’s 100-yard kickoff return for a touchdown to open the West Alabama game two weeks ago. Jackson is aver-aging 26.6 yards per return on the year, good for 36th in the nation, but the Wolves as a team average 25.6 yards

per return, which is good for 10th in the nation. J.J. Jones is averaging 11.1 yards per return on punts as well, which is good for 28th in the nation.

Jackson All-Purpose WatchJunior running back Devontae Jackson has been an All-Gulf South Conference performer as an All-Purpose back in each of his first two seasons at UWG. Three weeks against Mississippi College, the Wheeler High graduate added another feather in his cap, as he reeled off 147 all-purpose yards. That was less than half of his total against West Alabama the week before, but it put him in rarified air, as he became the fourth player in school history with 4,000 all-purpose yards in his career. He comes into Week 10 with 4,186 career all-purpose yards, which puts him just over 800 yards away from the career record in that category. In addition, he is now less than 100 rushing yards away from becoming the third repeat 1,000-yard rusher in school history.

Leading ReceiversEighteen different receivers have come away with at least one catch during the first 10 games of the year, and after last week’s four touchdown receptions, five different receivers have at least two touchdown catches in the 2017 season. Shaq Roland leads that group with 43 receptions for 497 yards and four scores, while Emoni Williams is catching up in yardage with 29 catches for 362 yards and three scores. J.J. Jones now has two touchdown receptions on the year, as does John Hurst.

Senior Class 2017This year’s senior class on offense features a pair of offensive linemen as well as a quartet of receivers and a running back. Senior offensive lineman Harley Vaughan leads the group, as he stepped up to the top of the UWG record books against Valdosta State, as he started his 46th game his career at UWG. Vaughan was a redshirt freshman for West Georgia in the 2014 season and went to the semifinals twice, starting every game in-between. The other offensive lineman is left tackle Desmond Harrison, who was injured at midseason, but came back last week against Florida Tech. Travis Custis is the running back, and the receivers are Deniko Carter, J. J. Jones, Shaq Roland and Josh Nobles.

The David Dean era begins in 2016 after a solid run over the past three years. Just seven years ago, West Georgia went an entire season without a rushing touchdown, and in the past three years, the Wolves have produced a top-10 season in school history. In the 2016 season, the final game of the year gave West Georgia a lot of momentum on both sides of the ball heading into 2017. The Wolves had 52 carries for 336 yards and five rushing touchdowns in that contest, the eighth time in school history that UWG had five or more rushing touchdowns in a single game. In the 2014 run to the NCAA Semifinals, the Wolves put up more than 3,000 yards rushing for the first time in school history, shattering both the yards and touchdowns record by more than 700 and seven, respec-tively. The 2015 season was more of the same, with the Wolves eating up yardage to the tune of another school record of 5.1 yards per carry. Prior to Hall’s ten-ure, there had been no 1,000-yard backs in the previous 10 years, and the Wolves have had a back eclipse that number in each of the past three seasons. First, it was Seth Hinsley in the 2014 campaign, followed by Devontae Jackson in 2015. Last year, Lamarcus Franks became the 11th back in school history to rush for 1,000 yards in a season, hitting for 1,009 yards as a senior.
